NHL to expand?

You're missing the entire point. the announced attendance was 15000. When many comps are given away, that is what you get - empty arenas.

And for what it's worth, it was Dale Hawerchuk night! If that doesn't bring 'em in, I don't know what will. ;)

But how many season ticket holders didn't show up because it was a midweek game in April and the team had long been eliminated? Those tickets were sold.

What about Flordia, Carolina, Atlanta, Colombus and many more teams.

Uh, Brendan? You're aware that two of these four showed a profit last year, right?

True, however the other two didn't make any money because they aren't real locations.

Florida, Carolina, Atlanta, Columbus.

So much for a "real" location...

Comps does nothing for the game. If (and when) people don't show up, you get a team playing to an empty arena and announcing near sellouts. The NHL already has a severe problem with this.

Example (announced attendance was more than 15,000):

There's a huge difference in the use of the term 'comps' in this case.

In Nashville, the team is comp'ing tickets, giving them away to fans in hopes they'll come back.

In Las Vegas, the casinos will be buying the tickets from the team, then comp'ing them to their customers. The team will still get its money for the seat.

Attention NHL, thanks but no thanks to Hockey in Kansas City or Las Vegas

or Uniondale

still Upset Toronto choked this season? 1967.

Well your run-down arena isn't helping matters. Maybe the Isles should follow the Nets to Brooklyn? I always liked that Brooklyn Americans logo.....

Besides, it's not like the Isles have had any recent post-season success.

But, they have made the post-season recently... ^_^

Well recently is a relative term. You could very well say the Leafs have made the post season recently. Heck, they've even been to two conference finals "recently," including one run that involved a series with the Isles that Leafs fans don't give a second thought to, but Islanders nation has yet to get over.

BTW, how did that thrashing by Buffalo feel?

As a Transplanted New Yorker now living in Houston, I say this city needs a team more then any other city. Houston to the NHL right now should be like LA to the NFL....it needs to go there.

1. Houston has the facility lined up (Toyota Center).

2. Houston has the market size (largest metro market not in the NHL). Houston has the corporate coffers lined up (currently helping to construct the MLS's first downtown soccer stadium).

3. Houston has an owner lined up in Rockets owner Les Alexander, whom has already tried twice to move the Oilers down south.

4. Houston will have the fanbase (look at Dynamo and look at how hockey has done in Dallas)

Quite simply, at this point, Houston has it ALL. And if expansion does happen, Houston will be the next stop. And besides, Im tired of traveling to Dallas or Atlanta, just to see the Rangers.

How did it feel when a team's 3rd-string goalie kept Toronto out of the playoffs?

I'm not sold on Las Vegas as an NHL market. First where would they play until they got an arena? The ECHL team plays at the Orleans Arena which is one of the smallest in the ECHL. The Orleans Arena is also far enough away from the Strip to make it difficult to get to without a car and honestly you would want the team to play as close to the Strip as possible. Is Thomas and Mack NHL ready, and would they even want to house a team there considering what David Stern said about it after the NBA All-Star Game (even as an interim venue).

Second, while Vegas is probably the fastest growing city in the US the majority of people are transplants from other parts of the country which then gives you a problem similar to Tampa Bay and Florida. That being while there could be a large number of hockey fans in that group they already have allegiances to other teams.

Hmm, not to bad actually. I was more pissed off at Toronto's lack of ability to finish the job themselves. Had they beat the Islanders themselves earlier that week the Devils/Islanders game wouldn't have mattered.

BTW, lets talk when Atlanta manages a playoff win. Meanwhile I'll just admire those 13 Cup banners we have hanging at the ACC.

Winnipeg and Quebec City would be my choices...I think if given their teams "back" like the Cleveland Browns had, they would fare better another time around.

That being said, it probably wouldn't happen if expansion were to occur. I don't know much about Hamilton...I do know they have a CFL team, are they large enough to sustain an NHL team? Would people become fans, or are there too many loyal ties to Buffalo and Toronto or even Detroit?

They wouldn't play. It's an expansion team the league can easily set their inaugural year for the year when the arena opens. Think Atlanta, Minnesota, and Columbus.

I'm fine with Long Island having a team to call its own. In fact, I wish Long Island still had the Jets and Nets. Most Jets fans are from the island anyway, aren't they?

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I think Las Vegas may indeed work as an NHL market. However comps is NOT the way to make a team work. My comment does have merit.

Exactly. Comps are great as a short term fix it when you are willing to lose overall profit to move in bulk, but eventually its gonna catch up with you. Casinos usually only work out comp deals with outside parties (AKA not affiliated with the casino) when they are in a desperate search for some extra cash, usually to pull them out of a slump in overall sales. But i've seen many a business go flat under after working out comp deals with casinos.

...none of which were won during your lifetime. You've experienced just as many Cup wins by Toronto as I have with the Thrashers, and they've played a total of 7 years.

41 years and counting.....the Chicago Cubs of the NHL!

Nah, the Chicago Cubs of the NHL are the Chicago Blackhawks. 47 years and counting!

God, that hurts to say that...

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008
