Super Bowl Hosting Requirements

Slickster

Recommended Posts

I posted this in another thread, and know it has zero chance of happening, but if I think a site in Las Vegas would be a very good idea. There is clearly hotel capacity, people like going there, and the temperature is nice enough. I'm assuming there isn't a stadium large enough already built, but Las Vegas is such a potential draw for other events (soccer exhibitions, Wrestlemania, bowl games, etc) that a 70,000+ stadium would certainly get some use. And anyway, isn't Las Vegas one of the few cities (along with Phoenix) that is still seeing strong economic growth?

Again, I know that it's a non-starter until there's an NFL team there (and given the NFL's weird stance on gambling, that's not likely to happen either), but I think it's an idea with merit.

I was about to say...wouldn't they have to stop betting on the game if it were to be played there?

Detroit does not meet the stadium requirements(Ford Field holds 65,000) or the hotel room requirements, the NFL waived them for Super Bowl XL because they promised the city and state a Super Bowl if they came up with funding for Ford Field.

IIRC, Ford Field actually does expand (somehow) to add 5000 more seats to get to 70,000. The hotel requirements may still be an issue, though Motor City Casino's hotel and the new MGM Grand are done and they weren't there last time.

- Glendale, Arizona

- Irving and Houston, Texas

- Miami and Tampa, Florida

- Detroit, Michigan

- Indianapolis, Indiana

I'd be shocked if there were 27,000 hotel rooms available in Indianapolis. Maybe the NFL is going to count South Bend and Fort Wayne as part of its metro area.

Indianapolis/Marion County has 21,500 hotel rooms, according to their CVB. So they were always going to be OK. This is the same town which host the 500, Brickyard 400, Circle City Classic/Black Expo, and is on the Final Four rotation. They are a big event city. I won't call them a convention city (the airport is lacking incoming flights), like San Francisco, NYC, and Chicago, but they are easily capable for such events. The San Diego stadium issue will take them out of the running and they know that. As for Las Vegas, they technically don't "need" the game as other events are in monthly like the UFC or boxing, plus the NFR was there weeks before. Granted, it is larger crowd, but the CES dominates January.

I forgot to add that the stadium proposal for Santa Clara is for a 68,000 seat stadium, so it should be expandable for more. The current design is to have all club and suite seats on one side, like Philips Arena and Soldier Field. The proximity of Santa Clara from SJC (San Jose airport code) and SFO (San Francisco) make them viable rooms wise easily. The Santa Clara Convention Center is across the street from the proposed site, so that can be teh media center if large enough, if not, they will base all of it out of San Jose. remember that Providence has been the HQ for the NFL during the last two title games in Foxboro. Todays Bay Area temp is 58 and luckily no rain.

Dang it that counts Salt Lake City out :P

But seriously, I'm tired of seeing the same cities over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Hows about a super back to Minnesota? Find some more domes stadiums to play in that are in other cities that Tampa and New Orleans and Miami. I hate hearing the bids for the new Super Bowls and seeing New Orleans. Miami, Tampa, then three years later see the same ones. I know thats not what really happens, but it sure seems like it. I'm all for a Minnesota super bowl in the Metrodome! I'm even more game for an Indianapolis Super Bowl in the RCA Dome!

Actually......Have it in Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake, where the summer olympics were held (the ceremonies)! Then us rocky mountainers can actually be a part of something!

The actual number of cities who currently qualify to host a Super Bowl:

-San Diego

-Arizona

-Dallas (Super Bowl XLV in 2011)

-Houston

-New Orleans

-Atlanta

-Tampa (Super Bowl XLIII next year)

-Miami (Super Bowl XLIV in 2010)

-Jacksonville (though not likely to host again)

-Detroit

-Indianapolis (with the opening of Lucas Oil Stadium next season)

So there you have eleven sites that could possibly host a Super Bowl. The only one I'm not sure of is Jacksonville because of the 27,000 required hotel rooms. Plus, you can add San Francisco/Santa Clara as a possibility if the 49ers can get a stadium built in either of those cities.

Minnesota won't host another Super Bowl unless they build a new roofed stadium. The Metrodome only holds 63,000 people which is 7,000 short of the minimum requirement. The dome isn't exactly the most charming stadium either.

You can also remove SD from that list - the NFL's powers that be have said that unless the stadium there undergoes some significant renovations, they won't host it again.

New Orleans can be removed from the list as well, as the city is likely nowhere near ready to host a Super Bowl-size event. The NFL hasn't had an affinity for Atlanta since XXXIV, when the temperature dropped into the 40's in January for the first time in about a half-century (and they're fearful that it'll happen again). Jacksonville's stint for XXXIX brought little but complaints. So realistically, we're basically back to where we were with SB's 30 years ago, only with different venues, rotating among around seven different sites:

- Glendale, Arizona

- Irving and Houston, Texas

- Miami and Tampa, Florida

- Detroit, Michigan

- Indianapolis, Indiana

I know it's outdoors, but could Charlotte, NC be considered? Their stadium is large enough, but I am not sure about the hotel/convention space.

*According to Wikipedia, Charlotte's avg. temp is about 55 degrees for Super Bowl time of year.

Ah, but that's a daytime high, not kickoff temp.

Maybe the league and the city of Los Angeles can get it's act together a do something about a team and new stadium. L.A would ben an automatic in the Super Bowl rotation with a new field. We are closing in on 15 years (WOW!) with out NFL football in L.A. I say the NFL will return to Los Angeles by 2015

Wacky future NFL stadium predictions:

-somehow or someway an NFL stadium is built in the Los Angeles Area (72,500 seats with lots of luxury suites)

-NFL finally gives up on New Orleans (which would be very sad in my book) and allows Tom Benson to sell the Saints to

a group that moves them to LA. Saints are reborn as the Los Angeles Gladiators. USC also uses this new stadium.

-A few years later the Raiders are sold by Al Davis' Family (after his death) to a group that moves them back to LA to

share the new stadium with the Gladiators & USC.

-Also the Buffalo Bills permanently move to Toronto after a 78,000 seat stadium is built to lure the Summer Olympics as

well. They are renamed the Toronto Bisons to keep the Buffalo heritage.

-In a happier note the Minnesota Vikings get a new 70,000-seat outdoor stadium in the Minneapolis suburbs & the 49ers

somehow get the new stadium built in Santa Clara.

Yeah, there will never be another game in the likes of Pasadena, Stanford, et al.

LA will get a team back eventually, and will obviously host Super Bowls.

If the Bills do move to Toronto, don't be surprised to see Toronto become a Super Bowl site.

Think about it--any stadium built there would almost certainly be at the very least a retractable roof one, Toronto is more than capable of meeting all those requirements (The temperature won't matter), and the NFL could go nuts with the whole "First Superbowl outisde of America" angle, etc.

Indianapolis should get a shot with their new world-class stadium opening.

Kansas City and the Jets would've if their dome plans had come to fruition. In fact, the Jets were guaranteed the 2010 game if they were able to build their West Side stadium which we all know was a disaster which led to the joint venture with the Giants at the "New Meadowlands".

Minnesota would need a new stadium. IDK why Atlanta's been shunned (Outside of the weather the week of SB 34, and it's a dome, so I don't get that one...)

St. Louis has a dome seating 66,000, though I don't know if its expandable or not.

Seattle lost any chance they ever had when the Kingdome came and went. I'm surprised they never got one up in Seattle, especially shortly after that had opened. I don't believe it was 70,000 either, but I doubt that requirement was there back then, b/c the attendance at the Metrodome's superbowl was 63,000 and change.

Finally, by the way, Ford Field probably is expandable, and Super Bowl XL saw 68,206 patrons, not 70,000+.

Regardless of whether or not it can be expanded, barring some fairly sizable renovations, the Edward Jones Dome will not be in the mix for a Super Bowl.

Will the new Jets-Giants stadium have a dome? You'd think New York would meet every other requirement, and then some!

Um, the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City.

For someone obsessed with history, you forgot 2002.

There's no way a Super Bowl will be held outside in the cold weather in a stadium that's not home of an NFL team.

What are you talking about? I freaking know the olympics were held in SLC. I live just 40 mins away from it. did you think I was serious? THAT WAS A COMPLETE JOKE - I know the weather here and theres no way a super bowl would be held here.

Not trying to sound stern or ticky, it's just that i'm not stupid and I didnt forget 2002. Infact I'll never forget it.

Seriously? You can't be this dumb.

What are YOU talking about? you guys confusing the heck out of me. I ALREADY SAID IT WAS A JOKE!!!!! Unless SLC gets a team with a domed stadium (which is highly unlikely given that we Utahns love to watch snow covered football) I KNOW it's not going to happen. I'm not seriously this dumb.

Your initial post said summer Olympics *whistles*

Finally, someone tells me what the heck I did wrong. Thanks, rams80. Had it not been for you I wouldve kept looking stupid and more people like Bringbackthevet would just tell me I was dumb instead of telling me what I said wrong. You guys had to have known what I meant, right? I'm really not as stupid as some on here think.

As for those requirements, here's what I tell the NFL - grow up a bit and get a Super Bowl in northern cities for once. It would make my life and millions more If they held a Super Bowl in say, Lambeau Field. Boy, that would be awesome to watch. Oh, too cold? GROW UP. I live in Utah where the average barely gets to 14 degrees in winter and I walk around outside with a t-shirt and jeans. It don't bother me any. I'm sure other cities like Green Bay, New York, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, and maybe even Foxboro wouldnt mind a Super Bowl coming they're way. and I can't wait for the day the NFL stops ignoring us and actually gets a team here so we Utahns can actually be a part of something. I know y'all don't care about Utah much, but I sure do. Heck, Rice-Eccles Stadium is huge. IDK it's capicty, but I've been there for U of U games and it is monsterous. If not, lets get a dome built.

I mean, I am just soooooooooo tired of places like Florida having two Super Bowls in three years. Anyone other than Floridian citizens with me on that? Heck, I'd even be happy with a Denver Super Bowl. It's a day's drive from where I'm at. And I'd glady drive for a day to go to a Super Bowl. I say tweak up the requirements, play in the cold weather like real men, and represent the whole league and country with your Super Bowls, eh?

The NFL likes all the celebrities that can come to the games, the celebrities and bigwigs aren't going to want to come to a game in the freezing cold and snow. They won't risk all the extra exposure by putting the game in the cold.

While I would be very sad to see either the Buffalo Bills or New Orleans Saints relocate to Toronto & Los Angeles respectively, I must admit your team nicknames are sensational. The only other "rub" would be how to re-realign the NFC, since the Saints, a South team, would be in the West. I'd suspect the St. Louis Rams would be moved to another division, but then that might get all the Ram/49er rivalry fans upset. Then again, many long-standing 30 plus year rivalries ended in 2002 when the league realigned (Titans/former Oilers - Steelers for example, Colts/other 4 AFC East teams for another example).

I too would love to see the Vikings have an OUTDOOR stadium again! I remember growing up in the 70s watching their playoff games with the cold and snow and all. A team named VIKINGS belongs OUTDOORS!!!

Really splended stuff though, Gladiators & Bisons, very well thought out, put a smile on this middle-aged man's face today!

Bill

The Super Bowl is not for the average fan anymore. It is for the bigwigs and celebrities. As a result, I see little point in attempting to patronize us by playing in a Northern clime (ignoring for a second the massive b!tchfest that Super Bowl week would be.) Might as well be in Florida under those circumstances.

Slapshot did correct you. Your response to him (and me) proved my statement.

Furthermore, why would anyone want the hassle of dealing with a Super Bowl in their home town? I bet the majority of people who want to see these games in other cities probably don't live in a place where they have ever had to experience all of the negative impact that a major event can have on your daily life.

Maybe if you are a mid-level or relatively small city out to "prove" yourself or "make a name" (for lack of a better way of putting it) then you want to host ASGs, SBs, etc. However, like Jacksonville found out, if you aren't ready for prime time, you probably won't get a second chance. Indianapolis, St. Louis, etc - be careful what you wish for.

Personally, if / when my team makes it to the SB, I want to be in my home city to celebrate a potential victory. BUT, if I was to travel and make an event out of it, I (and nearly all people who actually would pay the ridiculous amount of money to actually attend the game) want to go to a "resort" area / vacation destination, like Miami, SD, maybe NO, Phoenix, LA, etc. Not Detroit, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Minneapolis, etc. Nothing against those cities - I'm sure they're all fine places, but they're not exactly on the top of many people's winter vacation list (of course neither is my home city.)

Does the host city really have to have an NFL team? It's not in the requirements that were listed above, but I guess maybe it's the unwritten rule? Gotta keep the owners happy I suppose. Otherwise, I'd think San Antonio could host with having the Alamo Dome at their disposal. As for St. Louis, rams80 said it, plus the NFL pretty much hates our city.

My idea, and maybe it would get old & certainly be unpopular, is to just have the game played in Los Angeles every year, instead of giving them another team. The NFL would get their stars there & every other requirement would be met, assuming they'd build a stadium for it. Then, just rotate the Pro Bowl around all of the cities in the league year-to-year.

One of the idea's thrown around when the Rams first started to talk about moving out of LA/Anaheim, was to build a stadium near the Hollywood Park racetrack and it would have hosted the Super Bowl every other year, I remember Bill Jauss on "The Sportswriters on TV" being all mad about the idea.

No one ever said "You said summer olympics" until rams80 told me. Just saying "The winter olympics were held in salt Lake city" didnt help me at all because

1) I already knew that and that's what I HAD meant so it sounded more like a fact than a correction.

and

2) There was no mention of WHAT I had said so I didnt think I said anything wrong.

and how is "Seriously, you can't be this dumb" going to help me on anything? That's like showing your math teacher a problem you did, NOT knowing the answer was wrong, and having your teacher say "You can't be this dumb" and that's all. You wouldnt have even known what to do or how to fix it if it was wrong. Now do you see my side of it?

Sorry to sound stern, it's just that I hate it when people dont fully tell me WHAT it was I did wrong.

I see what your saying about the locations, and I know you mean nothing against them. It's just that, one of these days I would love to attend a super Bowl or get to go to an NFL game, period, but I can't because there's no where to go. And to drive a day to Denver especially where the Broncos arent my favorite team would be pointless unless it was a Super Bowl. see what I mean? And there are many like me everywhere, and big cities like Seattle, Denver, NY and Chicago never get the chance just because "It's a tad bit cold outside." Again, to the NFL, I say, GROW UP.
