I got my Bengals helmet( with Stripes) back in 1986 for $15. Riddell, with a chinstrap and double-bar facemask. I am sure that someone got their neck broken or major concussion for them to take those out of the stores because they were gone in 1987. Foam padding and strap suspension ohhh the good ole days before the Bike and the Revolution. Maybe wearing that is the reason I have short-term memory loss....oops I shouldn't have said that. Christmas '75 I was 11, and I remember looking at all of that stuff from the catalog and getting a bunch of it, too.... Seemed like every other boy in the later years of elementary school and early years of middle school had those "athletic jackets" with the vinyl "faux leather" sleeves... I distinctly remember in 1976 when we first got the catalog, flipping through the pages to see how they would render the jackets for the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks (yes , I was a uni and logo geek back before some of you were born...)Anybody else think the 1975 athletic jacket for the Broncos looks blue and red, not blue and orange? One thing I didn't see; I think it came out later (and I think it actually was from Avon) was some kind of kid's after shave, "bracing lotion" I think they called it, that came in NFL-themed decanters. More or less shaped like the Lombardi trophy; the cap was the football atop (gold plastic), while the bottle (brown or black glass) had a flat front like the trophy, with an NFL team helmet decal in front. When the whole "Orange Crush" thing started in 1977, I wondered what the hell they were talking about because they had red and blue uniforms. I'm convinced they didn't lighten them to the later orange until after the "Orange Crush" era (though I don't have any proof except Floyd Little's pants).EDIT: So I wasn't imagining things . . . and now I have proof (almost, anyway). To me, that color looks orange in name only. If I pulled that out of my crayon box, I would call it red.Those decanters were from Avon. My mom sold Avon for a few years and bought me the Colts one. Growing up in the 1960s and 70s, I had a bunch of silver and blue Houston Oilers gear, including a very cool varsity-style jacket and a Rawlings football helmet. I hated it when they switched to the Columbia blue helments and hated it more when they went to the white. Funny thing, When I played junior league football our jerseys were just like these from the 1969 Sears catalog:My team, the Hurricanes, were orange with black numerals and black over the shoulders. Nowadays, finding a simple "baseball-style" t-shirt with a simple helmet logo is damn near impossible in today's world of overdesigned and overstuffed merchandise. Or a classic NFL varsity jacket.
