mfoster
There can be a way to connect the Sonics nickname to the new one. Sonics --> Sonic Boom --> Boomers (Boomer Sooners)Granted it's a dumb name, but it makes sense at least.Boomers is also a fairly common nickname for 'shrooms, so I don't think they'd go for that...The Mountain Boomer is the state reptile of Oklahoma... I remember hearing that once they got out of Vancouver, they were wanting to change their nickname to something like the Express. I'm not sure what exactly happened, but they weren't allowed to make the switch right away so they just scrapped the plan and stayed as the Grizzlies. nmsuaggie
Take into consideration that Sonic Drive-In is headquartered out of Oklahoma City. Wouldn't it be ironic if they become a major sponsor of the new team? I wonder how long of a naming right contract does Ford have for the arena. Just think the Oklahoma Sonics playing in the Sonic Center. Go Aggies!

jhans203
When Louisville was trying to lure the Hornets and Grizzlies to Louisville. I remember there talk being of naming the team the Kentucky Colonels (after the ABA team), but having them play in a new arena dubbed the KFC Arena. That would have been awesome! I can imagine the promotions for the arena...if the team scores 125 points, everyone gets a bucket of chicken!

TenaciousG
Here's my guess as to why they'd trademark OKC Supersonics: The team cannot use the Sonics' name or colors per the KeyArena settlement. However, they can use the Sonics "history" with the option of sharing it with a future Seattle team. Therefore they may have a reason to trademark 'Oklahoma City Supersonics' that doesn't involve actually naming the team that. Of course having banners that say "Oklahoma City Sonics" doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But there may be other reasons that have to do with the club's history. But my blood boils just at the thought that they may try to steal the Sonics' name just like they stole the team from Seattle. I don't care if you're from OKC or Seattle - everyone should agree that Clay Bennett is a scumbag. wlightcap
Just a guess here. But the group that trademarked Oklahoma City Supersonics is out of Washington if you looka t the address. I am guessing this is part of the mechanics on how they could be sure that Oklahoma city does not use the Supersonics name.
