-NHL on ESPN. Gary Thorne was basically the voice of hockey for me when I was a kid. Idc what anybody says, hearing Gary Thorne doing PBP for a sport other than hockey is just weird.

Do you remember Tom Mees calling Hockey? And I agree, ESPN did a bang up job on hockey. It never ceases to amaze me how they can do such a great job on things like College Football, Hockey, Baseball, etc. and then just absolutely suck in their studio stuff.

Gary Thorne is one of the worst hockey play-by-play men out there. He would constantly misidentify players and mispronounce names, you know those small details of being a play-by-play man. I'm glad he left the Devils as their play-by-play guy in the early 90's to go to ESPN because it allowed Emrick to return to the team for the play-by-play duties and he is one of the best in the league.

ESPN went downhill when they aquired the NBA rights in the early 2000's and ended up with a monopoly on the sports broadcast for several years. It then got worse once the NFL launched NFL Network and ESPN in order to compete basically went to all football all the time. I lke football but it is overkill sometimes.

-The NBA on NBC. That was the first thing that popped up in my head. It really was a showcase of the best, at the peak of the NBA's popularity.

-

I can't believe I didn't mention this. NBA on NBC just says basketball, and their scoreboard thing was the greatest. Man, late nineties NBA was awesome.

-The NHL on ESPN

-Thursday and Saturday NFL games not on NFL network

-The 96-03 Cincinnati Bengals uniforms

-old Ohio Stadium before it was renovated

-football sleeves

-Riverfront Stadium

-football helmets that looked like football helmets. They're still around, but they are fast becoming a dying breed with the Revolution and DNA helmets

-non templated hockey jerseys

-Barry Larkin

-Boomer Esiason

-the NFL before Ben Roethlisberger

-The Avalanche and Red Wings rivalry of the 90's

-I miss the feeling around Columbus in 2000-2001. People in Columbus have an inferiority complex that comes from being the "3rd" city in Ohio. Getting an NHL team made us all feel like we hit the big-time and the energy level in the city was unbelievable. It was almost like they were coming off of a championship season. People still support the Blue Jackets, but it's like they've become jaded and forget what it's like to not have a major professional sports team in town.

-Eddie George when he was at Ohio State. The popularity of this guy in 95 was nothing short of a phenomenon.

-being a little kid and not understanding the reasons for the Bengals ineptitude. Every season began with extraordinary hope rather than realistic expectations.

-watching sportscenter 5 times every morning in the summer as a kid.

I thought of another one, Rock and Roll Part 2. I know Gary Glitter is a perv and has been convicted of child pornography, but that song is just perfect for sports, they were made for each other. Let's get someone to cover the song so we can hear it after goals in the NHL again.

The Pens' playoff run last year. I could go on forever about it, and still not even scratch the surface on how it felt, and to name all the things big and small that made that run nearly impossible for any future pens team to match, let alone top.

Well, consider the fact that the first time I watched hockey as a kid, it was with him doing the PBP, and I had no idea what was going on. I think it wasn't until the Thrashers came into the league was when I began to seriously follow the NHL (them and the Flames...hence my handle on here. lol.). So I had basically gotten used to Thorne doing it, and I guess I can say that unless it was a Thrasher, I didn't know too much better to point out the mispronunciations. I just enjoyed him calling the game.

I will admit, I'd probably rag on him now if it was that way, but I was a kid and I didn't know too much better. lol.

In the NFL,

Spotting the ball where the KNEE touched the ground. Non of this knee touching at the 30 and leaning forward to get the ball to the 31 or 32. Enough of the stupid refs giving them the extra arm extension. You are down when and where your knee touches.

Also, bring back the 5yd accidental face mask.

In sports in general, any time before the invention/use of thunder/clap sticks, I hate those damn things.

I kind of miss having an emotional attachment to my teams, before I realized how one-sided and pointless it was in my real life, and became more of a casual observer.

Keeping in mind that I'm 31 and didn't begin to care about sports until I was about 11 years old in 1988:

I remember me and my buddy's tongue-in-cheek hero worship of Greg Stefan. I remember writing "#19" all over my school book covers, and drawing comics featuring Steve Yzerman as a superhero. I remember the relative agony of missing the 1990 playoffs. I remember Nikolai Borschevsky breaking my heart in OT of Game 7 in '93, and Jamie Baker putting the Wings away in another Game 7 the next year. I remember writing letters to Bryan Murray. Finally, I remember being completely turned off by the overt bandwagon jumping that began in 1995, and became ridiculous come 1997.

I remember not even really being aware of the NBA until the night of Game 7 of the '88 Finals, and then becoming obsessed with the "Bad Boys" era Pistons from then on. After that, I remember temporarily switching allegiance to the abysmal Jason Kidd/Jimmy Jackson/Jamal Mashburn era Mavericks, pretty much as a "schtick" for my Pistons-adoring high school friends.

I remember faithfully rooting the Tigers on through a dreadful 1989 season. I remember the days of Cecil Fielder, Rob Deer, Mickey Tettleton and Bill Gullickson.

I'd say I remember some stuff about the Lions, too...but save for the 1991 season and Barry Sanders' career, it wasn't too much different from today. The uniforms were better, obviously.

As a DC sports fan, i miss RFK Stadium (Redskins version), that place used to rock. i miss Ron Weber calling Caps games (radio). i miss Darrell Green, and general heart and soul players (Alex Ovechkin is a nice reminder of how hockey used to be played). i miss Peter Bondra dammit. i miss the Redskins being good. i miss Joe Gibbs v1. i dont necessarily miss the NHL on ESPN, but i miss the theme. i loved that song.

The rule is that the ball is spotted at its location when the play is declared over (whether out of bounds, downed by contact, or taking a knee). If the ball has reached the 30 or 31 when the knee touches the 29, it goes to the 30 or 31 by rule.

As others have said, I really miss the days when Sportscenter was all about highlights and not talking heads debating.

I also miss...

...the days when Gene Deckerhoff could exaggerate Mike Alstott's every move during radio broadcasts:

The handoff is to Mike Alstott...Alstott up the gut...ALSTOTT POUNDS INTO THE HEART OF THE DEFENSE FOR A...TWO YARD GAIN!

...the brief era when Shaq played for the Magic, and I could go into any establishment in town and compare my height to the life-size cardboard cutout that every store and restaurant had in those days.

...those rare cold days in Central Florida when I and my friends, as kids, would put on the most ridiculously large and heavy coats we had so that we could play football in the backyard and feel like we were wearing pads.

The thing comes to mind for me is:

Regional Sports Networks : Back them it was truly unique and well very regional, now it's is pretty homogenized w/ little if any local content thanks to FSN and Comcast although (comcast does a decent job in that department)

The Minnesota North St (**) rs

1980s MLB parody (but not turf and uniforms)

Whalers, Jets, Nordiques

Four year college hoops stars

And in uniforms:

Brown/Orange Padres

Creamsicle Bucs

Christmas Devils

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."
