Rays vs A's Retro Saturday

This is probably going to be the first Rays game I go to since moving here last month. Super excited to see one of the ugliest uniforms of all time. I am oddly drawn to those caps and am also hoping to find one. Here is my question. I know that during their first season the Devil Rays wore a black cap with purple bill and devil ray oval gradiant logo at home and solid black on the road. Did they have an alt during their first season? After they switched to solid black caps with the gradiant TB logo for their second and third seasons did they have an alt cap?

No, when they debuted the uniforms in 1997. The home hat was purple crown with black bill. The road was the solid black and the alternate was the black crown with purple bill. By 1998, the purple with black was eliminated and the "TB" hat was the game hat. The two other hats were listed as "alt 1" and "alt 2". At the end of 1998, the black with purple was dropped and by 2000 the solid black followed.

Thanks for clearing that up. Dressed to the nines has it listed wrong in that case.

Dressed to the Nines is good to a point. They definitely miss the alternate caps & uniforms. It has gotten worse since MLB took over. Taka a look at the NY Mets, they do not have all of the uniform combinations/variation that the Mets have.

Yeah, I know they are lacking in the alt department, but they have the black cap purple brim listed as the home hat for the first season.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I'm excited to go down to the Trop for the first time, see if it is as bad as I have imagined. I just hope my wife doesn't want to stay for Smashmouth.

When I was in 2nd grade (get ready to feel old), it was the first or 2nd year the Devil Rays were around, and it was the first year I was allowed to play in our town's softball league. Our team was the Devil Rays, and we wore purple shirts and caps and stuff like that with the Devil Rays' first logo on it. SO i have a special place in my heart for them :P

Damn, when I was 10 this was like the coolest :censored: on the block to me. In every baseball video game I played as the Devil Rays just because I thought the uniforms kicked all sorts of butt. Good to see these make a one-night comeback, as incredibly 90s as they are.

Not sure to what the A's were throwing back. The tops they wore Saturday nightwere forest green, but the A's wore kelly green when they had pullovers with just the "A's" on the left chest and nothing else. The backs of the Saturday jerseys had no NOBs, which is another screw-up because the A's had NOBs back in the day.

Nothing worse than throwbacks done poorly.

Anyone happen to get a shot of the catcher's skull for the Rays?

I can't remember if it was Navarro or Hernandez because of the injury switch, but the logo on it was the TB hat logo from the same era as these unis, rather than the Ray logo.

I'm disappointed in the A's showing for this throwback day. Usually they do VERY well and go all out for throwbacks, but these were certainly leaving something to be desired.

Rays 2-7 A's

I think that the uniform is cursed...

I may be in the majority when I say this but, those unis have always been one of my favorites and I personally think they look great. Wish I couldve watched this game somewhere to see them in action!

Here's my only question though - did they get the batting helmets to match too?

It's been said many, many times before, but if you're gonna do throwbacks do em right. the A's just look sloppy.

The Rays set makes them look exactly like what they were, a poorly executed 1990's expansion team.

As opposed to the Marlins, who off the bat had a strong look. Say what you will about their color scheme, at least their cap logo of the "F" and the marlin has stood up.

Anyone else find it extremely strange to see a player as good as Evan Longoria wearing that uniform?

A's also wore the current road hats when back then they wore the home hat both at home and on the road.

I'm also ticked the game wasn't on television out here.

Good catch on the road hats. Can't believe I missed that.
