2009 NFL Season Thread

I was going to say, for $160, I'd buy a season ticket just to see my team play there, and then just ebay the rest of them. At a lot of NFL cities, $160 is just the starting point on the secondary market for a ticket. My roommate pays 160 or 170 per seat for his season tix, he gets them second hand from a SBL (PSL) holder that just sells his tickets. They're just regular seats, not even club or anything, but when you factor in the value for the marquee games vs. the crappy games, it averages out to be a good deal.

Just checked and the cheapest Falcons season tickets are now $350. They charge $175 for a 5-game package (upper deck corner/end zone, above row 14).

Still, $350 for season tickets to any pro team is an awesome deal. I know it's only about a 10th of the amount of games you get for season tickets in baseball, but I'd way rather spend $350 for 8 games than a couple grand for MLB season tickets.

The starting quarterback for YOUR New York Jets: Mark Sanchez.

Good call by Rex Ryan. You've gotta start your number one pick, especially when you factor in Kellen Clemens. The guy makes for a good backup, but he had his chance to start a couple yers ago and went 1-8. Thank you Coach Ryan for keeping his ass on the bench and going with the next Joe Namath! :D

Michael Vick has made his return and looks fairly good they've had him in the slot, at quarterback in the shotgun with McNabb on the field at the same time.

Vick must have really worked on his arm because the one pass he threw to Hank Baskett looked a lot like Favre throwing it.

What, the speed of the pass? I guess any Falcons fan will tell you that Vick has an absolute cannon for an arm. One of the things that hindered him was the fact that his receivers couldn't catch the ball because it was 1) too fast and 2) too hard. (Remember how some receivers claimed that they had bruised and/or broken fingers because of Favre's passes? Yeah, there's been a couple of guys who've said the same about Vick.) He just has terrible accuracy, and never seemed to want to work on it. I'm assuming that he did during his time off.

Baskett did just grab it by his finger tips

How much of this is the coach, and how much of it is just prima donna players?

Either way, getting rid of Shanahan seems to have been a total disaster, the likes of which hasn't been seen in the NFL for a long time.

I used to agree with that, but if Cutler and Marshall could play harmoniously to a Pro Bowl appearance under Shanahan, why the hell did it get so bad under McDaniels before they even took a snap (hell before they even had a real practice in Cutler's case)? I really can't just see this being a case of players acting like their feelings are hurt.

Is Josh McDaniels trying to get fired?

Just a word of advice to you Josh, you need an offense, stop pissing your point scorers off.

Because of McDaniels' inability to connect with star players, the Broncos went from AFC West contenders to worse than the Oakland Raiders in the matter of a few months. I don't think this is exactly what Pat Bowlen envisioned when he canned Shanahan last December following that horrific 8-8 season.

It's always the players' fault. Coaches are perfect.

Well, Marshall is obviously a prima donna and a jerk, and needs to be tought a lesson. Cutler was just misunderstood, and his behavio(u)r was perfectly understandable.

I doubt the coach is doing anything wrong... he's not losing his players like Herm Edwards did, or like Marvin Lewis is doing.

you probably know this, but no - I'm not serious.

Well, I feel a little better about the Rams defense now. I may want to hire an exorcist for the special teams, though.

PS Paul Brown stadium's fun.

PPS The ESPN highlight "package" didn't do a good job of summarizing the game.

With what I would consider to be the lack of backlash (and protesters at the game), how many teams are now kicking themselves for not signing him? Give credit to those with the Eagles who had an intricate plan to re-introduce him to the NFL and try to deflect most of the scrutiny. I am not sure if it will get much more volatile during his first regular season game back.

There was A LOT of work done to ensure that there wasn't protests, both pro and anti Vick. I work with someone who is involved in politics at a decent level, and also runs an organization that exposes and shuts down puppy mills. He told me about the meetings with the local groups that the Eagles have been having, and how the SPCA, his group, and other local groups have refused to work with Vick, but have instead asked the Eagles to start their own pro-animal projects up and put considerable money into it. The animal groups (wisely) decided that protesting would do more harm than good, and the pro-Vick groups (NAACP) were persuaded not to protest either.

The animal groups feel that since Jeff Lurie stated that Vick's success or failure will be based on his ability to work with animal groups and raise awareness for animal cruelty, etc., that simply refusing to work with him is enough to essentially ensure his failure. If the Eagles want to prevent this failure, they'll have to step up and start their own organization, which benefits the animal groups, Vick, and ultimately, the Eagles. That goal is essentially why there was no protest.

Also, from what I've heard from people who are friends with the Luries, Jeff Lurie is incensed at Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb right now, because he feels that he was talked in to making a horrible decision, and regrets even meeting with Vick in the first place. He and his wife are animal rights supporters (along with members of different animal groups who regularly sit in their suite) and have suffered a great deal from making this decision. Apparently Lurie feels that Reid sold him a bill of goods, and doesn't feel good about himself for making the decision to sign Vick.

Ultimately, Lurie did this :censored: to himself. He didn't sign Vick at gunpoint. Don't cry for him, Philadelphia.

Correct - if you sign the checks, the buck stops with you. Nobody's crying for him.
