However the OKC plan involves using the dormant Roadrunner franchise, not the Falcons franchise.

Of course, Austin is still looking for a permanent franchise.

There already is a permanent franchise in the Austin Metro Area: The Texas Stars.

The Texas Stars are a team currently operating on a temporary basis without a proper AHL franchise, as the only dormant franchises available at the time of their founding were owned by the Edmonton Oilers (now reactivated in Oklahoma City for 2010) and Schlegel Sports (currently tied up in legal wranglings over the calamitous collapse of the Iowa Chops.) Something to this effect uniform wise, would be fantastic:

It would be, but since this move is all about growing the Hurricanes brand in another part of the state, I'm damn near willing to lay down money on clone uniforms.

Here's the set in Hurricanes colors:

I actually hope they retain the Checkers name, with it being so relevant in the Charlotte area, but you think they would consider a "Hurricanes" related name? Storm? Although it would be extremely cheesy, the name "Tropical Storms" would be fantastic, since it's a less powerful Hurricane.

^In the AHL press release, it says they will maintain the Checkers name.

Your set just might be spot-on (with the "CC" replaced with the Hurricanes logo)...Would hope at least SOME aspect of their unique identity besides the logo remains-I already saw how the unique Rockford IceHogs secondary imagery (pig-tail alternate logo) was thrown out in favor of Blackhawks clonery...

Doing away with "IceHogs" imagery in favor of Blackhawks clonery is only a good thing. Now just lose the name and use that one dude's cool indian-birdhead concept instead.

Speaking of the old IceHogs, I wonder how long that thing is going to last, seeing as the whole Rock River Valley is one of the most economically depressed areas in the midwest. Follow the river from Rock Island to Janesville and it's just one big babbling brook of bad. I wonder if the Hoffman Estates Blackhawks will ever have to be a thing.

What about taking the red and black parts of the Hurricane's logo, rotating the red part 180 degrees and "spooning" the parts together to replace the shoulder logo. Taking a element of the parent club and making it the teams.

IIRC the IceHogs will live as long as the Civic Center believes it needs a tenant.

So does that mean the Texas Stars are only in the AHL for this season? If so, what happens next?

I put together a few Logo concepts as well, incorporating both the Checkers/Hurricanes Primary logos, and put together a similar wordmark since the Checkers current wordmark bothers me a bit with both lower and capital lettering.

I changed a few of the "swoops" on the Canes current logo, and in turn created a "C" in the foreground, which could also become a secondary as well:

That would be a most interesting question. Either Springfield's franchise goes to Texas and the AHL stays at 29 teams (unlikely), the Iowa Chops franchise mess gets resolved in the courts and gets sent to Texas (even more unlikely), or the Stars continue to operate without a franchise on special expemtion, leaving the rest of the teams in the league to wonder why, exactly, they have to be franchises (potentially chaotic). Anyone with more experience/insight on the matter care to chime in here?

"Could work"? Pshaw. That's the hotness right there. I think I like the version with the gray a little more; it's a bit less jarring.

Now here's the question that comes to mind, what will happen with the ECHL team? Rumor is they could move to Greensboro? Although, wouldn't mind a Ranger affiliate in Richmond, at least for a while.

I saw that GullsHockey.com got reserved by the Checkers' owner...sure hints that San Diego is where he's trying to sell it to...
