2 LA Groups Show Interest in Vikings

RAIDERNATION

Yes, because this thread hasn't at all been about the Vikings' stadium issues. My fault, I picked a Vikings-specific thread to post this to because I didn't see a "Metrodome roof collapses" thread. Of course the logical place for a run-of-the-mill story like this is the NFL megathread. :)

With that, I'll post this link to apic from inside the stadium that is likely already over there:

The Vikings may move next year, but today will be remembered as the day the Minnesota Vikings died.

Its no longer a debate, if Minnesota does not pony up the Vikings will be going Hollywood.

Have a 30 year old balloon enclosing a major sports venue just no longer cuts it. This incident illustrates why the Vikings need a new stadium, and if they don't get it, they are gone, and there's not too many people who can blame them.

Heres a silly question, could they simply renovate the Metrodome, pull off the roof and add lights. I think they are doing that in Vancouver.

I don't know the answer to that, but I do know the speculation about Rams similar situation. And that is that these teams are looking for top tier, modern stadiums, not just some polish on the old one. That doesn't mean it's not possible to renovate and make it top tier, what it typically does mean is that a renovation of that magnitude would cost just as much or more as building it from scratch.

That's not based on any specific study for either site, though, it's just the informed speculation I've read, and really it makes some sense.

That's one of the proposals, well kind of. It is to tear most of it down, but keep a lot of the foundation and cement and build upon that. It'll save some money, but not a ton.

That's also essentially what they did across the river in St. Paul a decade ago when they tore down the old St. Paul Civic Center to build Xcel Energy Center in its place.

That's still a lot of money.

Since the Rams were mentioned, St Louis would also have to build more luxury suites, increase the size of the locker room, build new team facilities, training rooms and offices and perhaps triple the square footage of retail space.

It's hardly a modest proposition - even if you can keep the four outer walls, everything inside them has to be gutted.

Now, maybe this would be simpler in Minnesota, since they're not under the same contractual obligations as St Louis. But even at its simplest it's a major undertaking.

Uh, Tank and others, it is more complicated than that because indoor stadiums/domes, do not have plumbing to deal with rain or snow. They have to add plumping to accommodate for rain water, especially in the upper deck. Adding proper drainage is $$$. People who want to take the roof off Georgia Dome have the same issue. Vancouver is trying to get away with this by a retractable roof system, but they still have to deal with rain and water getting in.

That is what BC Place has to deal with in addition to their new roof. They also are looking into having a casino next along to the new BC Place.

They could play at Target Field pause NOT!

Serious question. Why not? At least as a temporary measure until a new stadium can be built.

But in all seriousness, the Dome will be back in action sooner than you all think.

I have no doubt that it will. JQK's right though. This incident's proven that the status quo in Minneapolis is not going to cut it.

I'd say if the Metrodome is out of commision for the remainder of the season, TCF Bank stadium is more than likely the top choice for temporary home... unless U of M just flat out says no. How many home games does Minny have out of the remaining 3 (after Monday in Detroit)? Hey, Favre could end his career outside in the snow afterall. Will feel like he's right back at Lambeau.

Just next week's (regularly-scheduled) Monday-nighter vs. Chicago. They finish with two games on the road (at Philly, and then back to Detroit to actually play the Lions this time).

So, it's quite possible that the Vikings have already played their last-ever game at the Metrodome MoA Field.

One game left at home, next week against Chicago on Monday night. Seems like a temporary indoor home might be in order again. Otherwise don't you need to turn away some fans that can't fit at TCF? Of course, it won't really be a home game anywhere else. It'd matter more if the Vikings were in contention I guess. Maybe they'll just fix the roof in time?
