I'm a big believer in sabermetrics myself, but if there's one thing I've learned about doing as much work as I've done with it, there's no such thing as a golden stat to instantly tell you how good somebody is.

Most people use WAR, I like it alot as well, but the problem I have with WAR is that I think it undercompensates for defense and overcompensates for guys at offensive positions like 1B and LF.

And if we're talking about compairing guys from 1960 to 2000 I wouldn't say its a good indicator and would call anything that came up to be highly subjective, and with pitchers its even worse because of the inning differences.

I do wish however that the writers would start accepting defensive sabermetrics or better yet just use common sense so Derek Jeter can stop getting so many damn gold gloves already. But he had the highest fielding percentage of any shortstop in the AL last year. And he was also dead last in chances per inning among starting shortstops, so what does that tell you about his range?

There's never going to be a method that's very accurate for measuring individual defense in baseball.

I would agree going along the same line as what I said before about there being no golden stat, but at the same time, its not like the defensive sabermetrics are worthless.

I never said they were.

Well then I don't know what you were trying to get at. There's no perfect method for measuring defense, okay and.....if there's nothing beyond that both of us our wasting our time by even discussing this then.

It was just an observation. I wasn't "trying to get at" anything. Sorry it bugged you. Maybe Hedley was right.

It did bug me a little, but I'm over now, and I'm taking as nothing more then a minor miscommuncation issue. Those things are bound to happen from time to time when your not talking face to face. Bottom line is that I think we're on the same page, and there's no use arguing over nothing.

If I came off harsh as well, I apologize. Let's just move on.

And right there we have another lesson in Infared's how to post on the CCSLC 101. This is more like it, people.

What is it with ESPN Wednesday games going on forever? A couple weeks ago they had a LAA-BOS game (in Boston) that ended at 2:45AM Eastern Time.

I believe the Angels/Sox game had a rain delay.

Wilson Valdez just pitched against the heart of the Reds' order (with Carlos Ruiz at 3rd base) and got the win in the bottom of the 19th.

I actually just checked. There was a rain delay, but it was also a 13-inning game.

First position player since Brent Mayne of the Colorado Rockies in 2000 to be credited with a win.

...and the first (and only other) since Babe Ruth in 1920 to start the game as a position player and get the win.

Box score

-- Danys Baez, who can barely get through an inning without giving up a run, goes 5 scoreless (73 pitches) and batted once

-- Carlos Fisher, just recalled from AAA on Tuesday, threw 95 pitches and 5.2 innings in relief and batted twice, and was heckled like a bad goalie throughout the 19th!

-- Valdez getting reigning MVP Votto and Phillie killer Jay Bruce to fly out and shaking off backup catcher Dane Sardinha (like he had something else besides an 88 MPH fastball! )

-- Carlos Ruiz playing 3rd and diving onto the tarp for a foul ball

-- Scott Rolen playing all 19 innings and still didn't have a hit in 9 ABs

-- JC Romero going .1 IP with 3 walks and still not giving up a run because Brandon Phillips was picked off

-- Polanco, Howard, Ibanez and Ruiz playing the whole game and going a combined 5 for 30

-- Drew Stubbs going 2 for 9
