Hawks on verge of being sold.

Let those rumours on the Hawks to Winnipeg begin....

I'd imagine bluelandbeliever and any diehard Thrasher fan is going to be a little more pissed at ASG if this goes down. Wasn't ASG saying during the whole Thrashers thing that they weren't selling the Hawks/Phillips when those "local groups" were appearing, and then the Thrashers move. And if the Hawks/Phillips do end up getting sold, I'd know I wouldn't be happy if I was an Atlantan hockey fan/

ASG is a terrible sack of people.

ASG says a lot of things. I've long grown to just not listen to them.

ASG is less-inclined on selling the Hawks and Philips Arena because these entities actually have a chance to turn a profit. ASG never said they wouldn't sell the Hawks or Philips Arena, but they'd have to be blown away with an offer in order to do so. Of course, ASG could be willing to sell the Hawks and the arena now and just minimalize their losses. (I'm not sure how much of the overall $170 million they'll even see. $60 goes to the NHL for a "relocation fee", and if memory serves me correctly....ASG has borrowed money from the NHL and/or NBA in the past, and they have to pay off those debts.)

Maybe this could be a blessing in disguise. The ASG-owned Thrashers were never really going to contend anyway unless the team overachieved. So this mystery businessman buys the Hawks and Philips Arena, then goes after the Coyotes (assuming the NHL and the Clown Council of Glendale no longer wishes to fund the team) and gets them to move to Atlanta, as the city is one of very few with an NHL-approved arena ready for action. Likely doesn't happen, but weirder things have happened.

By the way, the Hawks aren't eligible for relocation. Since the city actually owns Philips Arena via taxpayer bonds, the Hawks are bound to the arena until 2028.

Why do the Wolves need a new arena, and if they do need a new arena can't they use the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. That looks like a fine arena to me.

They don't want a new arena, they just want money to remodel the Target Center. They don't need a new building. They don't need to remodel the Target Center, either.

I'd like to see the legislature deny that funding. What have the Timberwolves done in the last seven years to show that they deserve public money?

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

You apparently did not click the link or look at the domain name as it is "targetcenterrenovation.org.

The team does not own the facility, but contends that the city of Minneapolis, which owns it, will lose out on all other non-basketball bookings or 75% of the building's current use and the subsequent downtown spending (touted to be a 16 to 1 ROI in terms of tax dollars). In addition, the city has had issues keeping up with payments and upkeep since 2008 as they share revenues with not only the team, but also AEG.

And as expected, the NBA will lock out @ 12:01 AM Friday.

Once again, this is probably gonna get uglier than the NFL's, & the NFL lockout is uglier than Anakin Skywalker after he caught on fire.

Completely agree with that. My guess is that the NBA is telling players they need to take pay cuts in order for certain franchises to survive and the players probably have the view of if that's the case then let the franchise(s) fail, so this could take awhile.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded PF J.J. Hickson to the Sacramento Kings for Omri Casspi and a Protected First Round Draft pick. Sources say Chris Grant and the Cavs were shopping J.J. for 6+ weeks.

That's a pretty good trade for the Cavs. I'd say they won that with the 1st round pick.

I don't what's going on with the Kings. First they complete the trade of John Salmons for himself and now they give up a first round draft pick for J.J. Hickson who's a pretty good young player, but he's nowhere near worth what will probably be a lottery pick. Not to mention the fact that Omri Casspi isn't really that far behind Hickson talent wise either, so unless they think J.J. Hickson is going to be the second coming of Kevin Garnett the trade makes no sense on their end.

Ever since draft night, the Kings have basically salted the Earth and razed any momentum they had towards possibly being a good team in the future. They must be creating an excuse to move away from Sacramento through tanking - that's the only way to explain trading a first-rounder for JJ Hickson or taking back John Salmons.

Its like the plot of the movie Major League only in real life. I could also see the Maloofs being in financial trouble. Another one of these overnight billionaires off of owning real estate and had to get hammered in the recession. Don't think their situation is quite as bad as Frank McCourt's is with the Dodgers, but it may not be that far off either.

Guys, the pick is protected like so...

-2012 it's full lottery-protected

-2013 it's protected picks 1-13

-2014 it's protected picks 1-12

-2015-2017 it's protected picks 1-10

-If in 2017, the pick still hasn't been given, the Cavs get the Kings' 2nd round pick to the Cavs unless it is pick 56-60.

So, yay second round pick!

Okay that makes a little more sense. In that case the trade is about even.

Either way, the Cavs are in asset collection mode. Baron Davis, Ramon Sessions, Boobie Gibson, Anderson Verejao and Antwan Jamison are all on the block for the highest bidder. To be honest, I think they are going to try to package all their second round picks for another first rounder, and then try and trade the aforementioned players for first round picks, and then offer all the picks they have for the first over all pick. Sounds crazy, but they want Harrison Barnes.

The Maloofs are still not in the best financial shape. However in the last two weeks, they have sold controlling interest in The Palms Hotel and Casino and in doing so restructured their debt in the property, reducing it from $400M to just $20-30M. As a result, the family only has a 2% stake in the casino resort.

nba.com is the most depressing part of the sports internet right now. David Stern, Walls of Text, & a WNBA player. That is depressing. Not even the NFL's homepage went all the way dark. I knew that this lockout would get ugly, but it got ugly in a hurry.
