2012 MLB Season

The Tigers play is just disappointing right now. I have no other words to describe it.

I have other words, "pathetic, phoned in, terrible, abysmal, vomit inducing, little league, AA, dumb, half assed, sad, heartless, and gutless."

Oh, I can't go that far. They just ran into a buzz saw.

No they ran into a chain saw. But only because they stopped and helped the Giants start the saw, then politely guided the blade right into their bellies. The Giants aren't winning this series so mich as they're letting the Giants win. This is not the same Detroit team that manhandled the A's and Yanks.

With the way the Yankees were hitting and the Giants are pitching right now, the Yankees would be scoring negative runs.

This is no different than the powerful Texas lineup running into the Giants pitching two years ago. Both in 2010 and 2012, the Giants already-excellent staff has just managed to reach an even higher level of insanity in October.

Oh come on now. I know you don't want to, but you really have to give the Giants more credit than that.

Not really. Having watched them several times in person this season against the A's and Padres I was not overly impressed by them. Not saying they're not good, but Detroit was better. Then they took a week off and decided they didn't want to play anymore.

I certainly do.

The Giants' pitching staff is just insane right now. And it isn't merely that the Tigers aren't hitting well - I'm seeing SF pitchers owning the corners and throwing some pretty unhittable strikes.

Exactly. Just one example: Lincecum was throwing some un-Godly stuff last night. Watching him in relief, it was hard to believe he was having so much trouble as a starter during the regular season.

Except there are always exceptions to that rule.

I'll point out two easy examples: Rangers/Rays in the 2010 ALDS, and then Rays/Rangers in the 2011 ALDS. The offensive juggernaut beat the pitching juggernaut both times. That old baseball saying is not nearly as cut-and-dried as one would be led to believe.

Who said it was cut and dry? Anyway, when a staff is pitching like this Giants staff is, I don't care who's in your lineup, you're not going to beat them.

That was then, this is now. Maybe they weren't pitching well earlier in the season and are just peaking now, but so what? That's sport.

Even an A's fan has to give the Giants credit for the way they're pitching now. This isn't Detroit losing the Series, this is San Francisco winning it.

I heard the same thing from some Yankee partisans after the ALCS - Detroit didn't actually win anything, the Yanks handed it to them. Well, no. Detroit shut down the Bombers exactly the same way the Giants are shutting down the Tigers right now.

That's a problem with certain pockets of "fandom" these days; no one ever loses, no one ever wins. The outcome is always the fault of something or someone else. Reminds me of politics.

Exactly my thoughts. It's why I can't talk sports with most people anymore, and partially why I've emotionally detached myself from sports altogether.
