PhlyBoy
This is a bit of a tangent (to "amusingly appropriate numbers), but how about Jordin Tootoo wearing 22Or Joseph Forte wearing number FortyI do not understand what is weird about the numbers 22 and 40.You serious, Clark?I do not follow either of the teams so yes i'm serious.forte-fourtytootoo-twenty twotheir names is the unusual part.I didn't get it either until now, and I feel like a moron lol. Cosmic
On that same tangent...Mike Commodore wore #64....Commodore was petitioned to wear #64, but never did. Also, Martin BironThe last player to wear 00 in the NHL, or so I have been led to believe. sc49erfan15
I can't believe no one has mentioned the chief for 00. Has any team ever SIMULTANEOUSLY had a '0' and '00'? The Celtics have had numerous '0's since Parish's number was retired (Walter McCarty, Leon Powe, currently Avery Bradley)Relatively certain that NCAA (not sure about NBA, but I'd put money on it) stipulates that you can have players wearing 0 OR 00, but not both.Personally, I'd like to see more 0_ numbers, ala Benito Santiago's 09. kevinmets
(While we're on the subject of 00s...)Tony Clark - unusual because 00 has always been Mr. Met's number, he's the only player to have ever shared it.
TheStoicPaisano
Johnny Neves of the Fargo-Moorehead Twins had a surname that spelled "seven" backwards and wore an appropriate number.Carlos May.His birthday? May 17So he wore his birthday on the back of his jersey.Couldn't find a picture with NOB.

illwauk
Nothing particularly unusual about Braves pitcher Andy Messersmith's number 17, but in the early days of NOBs in MLB, they allowed for players to use a nickname instead of their surname. After Ted Turner purchased the Braves, he gave Messesmith the "nickname" of Channel, which created a default ad for Turner's TV station WTBS. MLB was not amused and put the kibosh on nickname NOBs shortly thereafter.
sc49erfan15
Can we count this? (FUBU jersey edited)I actually had a blue & gold version of one of these bad boys that said "North Side."I immediately thought of those... definitely belonged on "I Love the 90s"We're starting to stretch it here, but (similar to the Carlos May/May 17 mentioned above) Bill Voiselle pitched in the 1940s and wore an unusually high number for the time, 96 - the highest number worn in MLB until the 1980s. The reason for wearing #96 is because he grew up in Ninety Six, South Carolina.
