Phillies have signed their new tv rights deal, but terms not yet disclosed.

Team and Comcast are going to withold the terms, but it is apparently in the "billions". Yet, the team refuses to increase their payroll - and is actually decreasing it. Not that Ruin Tomorrow knows how to spend it, but at least make an effort. This team should be the Yankees of the NL, but is operating more like the Mets.

I always had the impression that Philly was much more of a football market. I know the Phillies have really taken off since moving into the new park, in particular since 2007. I always kinda figured their popularity was similar to that of the '90s Indians, who were great, had a cool new park, and benefitted from the Browns sucking and then leaving town. The Reid-era Eagles were past their prime once the Phillies started making the playoffs, so I kinda figured the city overwhelmingly got behind them just to have a winner to pull for until the Eagles were good again. Would you say that's acurate? I mean, how much am I underestimating Philadelphia as a baseball market? Because I can't see the team justifying a billion dollar TV deal longterm, especially with them heading into a rebuilding period.

Damn it looks like the whole place went up... reading about it just now it looks like part of the stadium has already collapsed.

She wasn't even that old of a stadium either being only 20 years old like Camden Yards.

The Whitecaps co owner said the first base side suites, concessions and whitecaps clubhouse along with the room the that dose audio and runs the electronics is a complete loss. They will rebuild and plan on being open for opening day and plan on still hosting the All Star Game

For the most part you got it. It's more of a baseball market than you may give it credit for but if the eagles ever win the parade will dwarf the phillies - and that was round 2 million people.

Sad, but better a ballpark than somebody's home. Hopefully nobody was injured.

Phillies new tv deal worth more than $2.5 Billion, plus 25% equity in Comcast SportsNet, plus "unprecedented" shared ad revenue.

Jesus fraking Christ.

So the Phillies are in league with Old Scratch now? Good luck with that.

What's weird is Comcast SportsNet started in 96 when Comcast merged with Ed Snider's Spectacor and essentially bought the Flyers. I always assumed that the Flyers owned it, since they had their own network previously (flyers home games and soft core porn).

I think these types of deals will become more normal as alternatives to teams starting their own RSN from scratch.

They don't start collecting until 2016 though, so I guess they're not going to spend until then (if even then).

You have to think Ruben'll be gone by 2016, right? I'm sure he'll sign Jimmy Rollins to a 10-year extension before he leaves, but at least he'll be gone.

Jerry Coleman, the long time radio voice (and one year manager) of the San Diego Padres, former MLB player for the Yankees and the only MLB player to ever serve in combat in two wars (WW2 and Korea) has passed away at 89. He'd been broadcasting right to the end working the final Sunday game this season.

To steal a line from Jerry, "you can hang a star on that (life) baby!" Godspeed Colonel.

So this is very interesting.

Comcast made the Phillies fire two of their TV broadcasters, including one who had been with the team for 37 years (though most fans didn't like him, and Harry Kalas hated him.) The new deal gives them the right to put Comcast employees in the booth, when previously the announcers had been Phillies employees (and since Kalas died, obvious company guys.)

The new 2.5B deal gives the Phillies a 25% equity stake in CSN Philly (Comcast's flagship), but the investment also gives Comcast more control over things than previously thought. Investing 2.5B plus equity means that they have every incentive to ensure that a winning team is on the field so people tune in, so now there's speculation that Comcast could actually force them to fire the GM if they suck, and possibly infuse "side" money into the payroll (not that there's any need for more money with the Phillies - they just need to spend it.)

As a fan, I want to think this is a good thing, because you have a HUGE company bankrolling a team that they need to be a consistent winner. On the other hand, you have non-baseball people who might have the power to force baseball-related decisions. Not that the Phillies baseball people are any good, but still.

Thing is their radio team is absoutely fantastic. They're quickly becoming a modern day Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn.

While I would love to have them on TV for the next... until they die, there's a certain charm to listening to them on the radio while at the beach every summer. I just hope they pay Scott Franzke well enough so that he doesn't bolt for a TV gig. He and Larry are so good together.

Jim Jackson is even more of a douche at baseball than he is at hockey. He somehow manages to work in how the referees are deliberately screwing the Flyers in to baseball broadcasts in July.

I didn't mind Wheels as much as most people, but it's probably no big loss. Sarge was incredible - "well, you know, when you get hit by a 90 mph fastball in the wrist, it's going to hurt - so, that's why you see players try to move out of the way of those fast pitches". Oh, sarge. You and your wacky hats.

I think Jim Jackson is pretty damn good whenever I drop in on Flyers telecasts, and complaining about the refs screwing the Flyers at a Phils game in July is just so delightfully perfect.
