CS85
So the Cubs are taking yet another offseason "off" due to what Hoyer is calling "economical reasons." They're using the Mariners as a template, apparently, and feel like their young guys aren't ready yet. Once they're ready, I guess that's when they'll spend some dough. How many titles have the Mariners won in the last 20 years again? They've had 2 winning seasons since 2004 and have only won 6 total playoff games since 1977, never once winning a series. They can revamp the exterior of Wrigley and beautify the neighborhood, but it's extremely hard to remain a fan of a franchise who's deliberately pissing into the wind. I'm stuck with them, unfortunately.Should be another long, hot summer on the North Side....How many years in a row can they afford to leave fans with absolutely no hope going into each season? There's always some shred of hope, because baseball and all of sports is inherently random like that, but it insults my intelligence that they would use the Mariners as a basis of success. I don't give a rat's ass if Seattle's plan is economically viable. Fool me. Lie to me. Blow smoke. To scoff at the notion of disregarding free agency simply because the franchise isn't a point with it's youth where big contracts are viable doesn't matter to me. You can't simply ignore the good aspects of any offseason market simply because it doesn't fit into your plan. I'm not saying throw stupid money around but you can spend shrewdly and still assemble something that could compete. The Cubs are in denial that they're in one of the biggest sports markets and while yes, I understand their prerogative of emphasizing the system and giving their payroll an enema, but give me a break. So the Cubs are taking yet another offseason "off" due to what Hoyer is calling "economical reasons." monkeypower
The Mariners are stocking up on first basemen, signing Corey Hart and trading for Logan Morrison. Standing by for the inevitable Ike Davis trade. The Mariners better have all their games at night.

Lights Out
They're using the Mariners as a templateThese Mariners? The same Mariners who just literally outbid themselves for Cano by accident? Great plan! POTD: 2/4/12 3/4/
Kramerica Industries
Reading the report about them bidding against themselves for Robbie had me literally doubled over in laughter last night. I mean, that's a special brand of franchise incompetence to do that.
bosrs1
Looks like collisions at the plate are now a thing of the past. The Rules committee has voted to make running over the catcher illegal at home now and slides mandatory in situations where the play is going to be close. Not unlike many lower levels of baseball up to high school already do. They still have to figure out the enforcement but it'll probably be an out if you don't slide and a run if the catcher tries blocking the plate from now on. Not a huge deal, but it does take away one of the few impact aspects the game had left, which is probably for the best. Several catchers have had their careers shortened or deferred because of plate collisions (Ray Fosse, Yasmani Grandal and of course Buster Posey all spring to mind).http://deadspin.com/it-looks-like-mlb-will-be-eliminating-home-plate-collis-1481456654#The Buster Rule? njmeadowlanders
I guess the Mets signed Colon to eat innings.I'll see myself out.Seriously though, I don't get this move. If you're trying to win the WS this year it's one thing. They could've used that $ on Stephen Drew though. Their pitching was decent to start with. What will this get them? 78 instead of 75 wins? Shumway
Not necessarily news-worthy, but a day after getting traded, Mark Trumbo still appeared at the Angels' Foundation holiday event for children.
