Donald Sterling: Don't Bring Black People to My Games

Owning the smaller share of a huge, lucrative market can be more valuable than 100% of a smaller market. Kansas City? Seriously?

ok Kansas city was me just throwing out a name with Seattle. But honestly the market share they have here is probably even smaller than what the kings have in Sacramento, Seattle is a prime spot for the clips, bigger market then they're market share here better fans, given the choice I'm moving to Seattle.
The lucrative LA TV rights that are for sale next year all but guarantee they're not going anywhere. Even their smaller slice of LA is worth more than Seattle can offer. This isn't the Clippers of 10 years ago.
Um a tv network is no good if you can't get them on tv we still dont have dodgers games, and I wouldnt be surprised if dont for a couple of years I doubt one the clippers get will be anywhere near the size before the Dodgers TV issues I doubt it'll be there now. These are also the clippers that lucked into a good team do to stern being a pos and gm that made these moves being gone. who is going to out bid the Seattle group who could probably be getting Microsoft involved. The Magic group would be alienating itself from two sets of fans Lakers fans for magic being a traitor and Dodgers fans for loseing focus on them, it's like a death sentence for them in the public eye here. Its a real possibility they leave, and It's the only option wanted by the majority of people here in LA.

Two things, one highest bidder doesn't seem to win all that often in NBA purchases (see: Kings, Warriors, Hornets/Pelicans sales). Highest bidder lost all 3. Second, Guggenheim isn't the only LA based ownership group. But even if they do win, who cares if they alienate Laker fans? Lakers fans aren't necessarily Dodger fans and vice versa. And even so I think you overestimate how much fans of one team in one sport will give a crap what their owners do about another team in another sport. Most sports fans can't even tell you who their owners are. I mean if anyone thinks Magic Johnson owns the Dodgers they're deluded.

It's hard to imagine the Clippers moving when they didn't even move to Orange County. I know that was party due to Sterling's ego, but cant see a relocation happening.

Actually I'd like to see that move happen when their current lease expires (or if they can get out of it). It was Sterling's hubris and their sweetheart lease that kept them in Staples rather than going their own way and getting out from under the Lakers to Orange County. But Honda Center would be a far better location for them to start building more of a permanent fanbase. And the fact it was freshly NBA renovated makes it an even better option. And it would do for basketball what the OC/LA spit has done for baseball and hockey too. Giving it not only a local but a sub local flair to the rivalry rather than the Clippers being the lowly roommate to the "great" franchise.

At the end of the day Sterling's going to get paid a lot of money for the team and to just go away. There's no way that can be avoided because, well, it's his team. Yeah, it would be great if they could rescind the franchise, contract the team, or shoot the Clippers' head offices into the sun, but that's not how the real world works. Sterling's going to go away, but he's going to do it with a substantial cheque. That does suck, but at least he's out of the NBA. Which is all the NBA should be worried about anyway.

He still probably has more money than any of us would know what to do with, team or no team. He did, after all, have the money to buy the team in the first place. I'm not sure what these people who don't want him to make any money from selling the team hope to accomplish.

The amount of people crying foul over this citing the 1st amendment really bothers me.

Sterling says Clippers are "not for sale."

Somebody tell him how this works.

He said that before today's meeting. And he doesn't really get a choice in the matter if the other owners kick him to the curb.

The amount of people crying foul over this citing the 1st amendment really bothers me.

Why? Most people in this country have no clue what the first amendment does and doesn't protect and who it protects them from. (Hint: it's not the NBA).

The 1st amendment only protects people from the government arresting or passing laws regarding censorship. This has absolutely nothing to do with this.

Dude, I'm pretty sure the 1st amendment means you can say anything you want at any time with no repercussions whatsoever. Twitter told me so.

Yeah, or else, we'll invoke the 2nd ammendment on your ass.

Well, FWIW, I'm not necessarily "crying foul" when I bring it up, but there are several factors, including free speech (although that's one of the more minimal issues, IMO), that will make this move quite a complicated one for the NBA to pull off. First off, they still need 2/3 of the owners to vote him out, and who knows what type of connections with/dirt he may have on some of these guys? That becomes even more difficult if the vote is kept private. Secondly, if this goes to court, the NBA still needs to prove that there was a violation that was sufficiently egregious, in terms of a legal sense, to force him to sell. Third, considering it was a recorded phone conversation, there could even be privacy laws that afford him certain protections (Or in the very least, invalidate some of this. Again, from a legal perspective). These issues, along with many other complicated ones, will come out in the next few months and it simply may not be just as easy as "Sell your team or we're taking it from you!". I trust that there are enough top attorneys associated with the NBA that they did all they could to make sure there weren't any legal loose ends, but considering how quickly this decision had to come down, who knows?

Maybe he will get his franchise revoked after all....

Doesn't hurt him in the pocketbook does it?

Hover text: I can't remember where I heard this, but someone once said that defending a position by citing free speech is sort of the ultimate concession; you're saying that the most compelling thing you can say for your position is that it's not literally illegal to express.

Players were prepared to boycott

It's easy to say that now, since nobody can call their bluff, but DAMN that would have been interesting if the league gave Sterling a slap on the wrist and then a whole night's worth of playoff games didn't happen.

It would've been pretty amazing if this had happened.

Wow... I didn't even think about players starting the game and then just walking off the court; I was thinking of a situation like a weather delay where the game is cancelled beforehand. I think there would literally be a riot if 18,000 people came to watch a playoff game and then the players left the court after the start.

So, let's assume the owners vote to force Sterling to sell the team.

How much power do they (the owners and/or the NBA) have all in the particulars of a team sale? Does Sterling have any power in the talks? What happens if Sterling keeps telling prospective bidders that "No, not a good enough offer." just to delay selling the team?

I think in this case Sterling's ownership group will be forced to provide a value of the franchise. They can't force him to lose money on the sale since he paid something stupid like $15 million for the franchise in the first place.
