FIVE relocations? In one off-season? Does this not strike anyone else as odd, even for a minor hockey league?

It's been in the works for a few years and while they are relocations, its also cities switching league affiliation. The NHL teams on the west coast wanted to be able to monitor their prospects closers as well as save on expenses doing so. This has the backing of both the NHL and AHL. What I didn't see mentioned, is the Stockton ECHL team is moving to Glen Falls, NY as the Flames have purchased them and the Bakersfield Condors (already owned by the Oilers) ECHL franchise is moving to Norfolk to be run by the former owner of the Admirals. The Kings (who already owned the Ontario Reign, are essentially switching where their E and A affiliates are when they bring the Monarchs out west. It's kinda a give and take being that the ECHL had teams in the west that the AHL was looking to expand to. Each league obviously has expansion fees so buying teams and trading cities is kind of how this worked out.

Also, this is the perfect opportunity to create the ultimate affiliate bird trifecta: Anaheim Ducks, San Diego Gulls, and Quad Cities Mallards anyone?

Not sure if it will change with the "full" move to ECHL, but the Mallards were affiliated with the Iowa Wild (and therefore, Minnesota Wild?) the past couple of years.

You're right. Quad City is teaming with Iowa and Minnesota... but both Iowa and Minnesota also teams with Alaska.

It's part of the ECHL to see two NHL affiliates for a team (and therefore two AHL affiliates in the process). The only teams to not have an NHL partner are four of the teams in the newly formed Central Division (Missouri, Rapid City, Tulsa and Wichita). Missouri is the only team to just have an AHL affiliate and Kalamazoo is the only team with three AHL affiliates.

I really hope that the Flames don't rename the Thunder the Grizzlies. It's a great identity and they won a championship just a few seasons ago. If the Flames really wanted the Grizzlies, they should have bought Utah instead. (Closer to home too)

I also love this logo. A modern classic. Simple, gets the point across, classy, and not that OKC mess.

Just saw that the Grizzlies name for the Stockton team may not be final option. http://www.stocktonthunder.com/2015/01/30/flames-unveil-plans-for-future-in-stockton/

Stockton Thunder President Dave Piecuch spoke next, reassuring fans that made two and three-year season ticket commitments, that their plans would be honored and provided some insight as to just how big a move this will be for Stockton. “88% of current NHL players have played in the AHL at some point in their careers,” Piecuch said. “As far as the name of the new team is concerned, we will hold a ‘Name the Team’ contest where fans can weigh in on their favorite choices and we have not ruled out any names at this point in time.”

Here is a good read about all the info on this move: http://www.icethetics.co/blog/2015/1/29/five-ahl-teams-relocating-to-california-cities-for-2015-16

Now the Canucks, Coyotes, Colorado & Winnipeg could do the same and move the Idaho Steelheads, Las Vegas Wranglers, Colorado Eagles & the Rapid City Rush to the AHL (from the ECHL) for their more closer AHL affiliates. This would kind of put Utah and Alaska as outliners of the ECHL so maybe they could move east and make the ECHL more Eastern again.

Well Las Vegas ECHL has folded this week so they're out of it no matter what. But with regard to Alaska, their owner seems indifferent to where his competition is located. And it makes sense, they have to fly to all their games anyway, what's one more hour on the plane flying east for them?

Bakersfield has announced a name-the-team contest. No more Condors.
