Seattle has an NHL team

Recommended Posts

I could live with Metros. It does sound kinda lame, but it could work. It's kind of got a euro/soccer type of feel.

I could live with Metros, Sockeyes or Sea Lions. Even Totems or Emeralds wouldn't be the end of the world.

Emeralds

Not happening if the suspected red and black colour scheme is going to come to fruition.

Totems

Their closest geographic rivals use totem imagery. Not a good fit.

Sockeyes

So you want to make it easier for road fans to mock them, eh?

“Suckeyes, lol”

Sea Lions

This is good...

Metros

...this is better.

It’s gonna be great when the NHL inevitably overcorrects the mistake they made with Vegas and this team ends up sucking harder than we’ve seen an expansion team suck in years.

Also, red and black? Oh :censored: you.

That seems a little soon.  Might be later 2019 or early 2020 since team wont begin play until 2021.

It would seem early.  However, there has been word from NHL Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke that they may reveal it sooner than later.

Quote

With the NHL’s board of directors holding a vote in December on the city being awarded a franchise, Leiweke told 710’s Danny, Dave and Moore that a logo would be revealed in the spring if a vote passes.

“It’s probably gonna be spring, and we’re working on it right now. I’m working on it next week,” Leiweke said.

Time Zones Uber Alles, I say, as I put a team half in Pacific Time with teams in Central Time

I have to think the reasoning on this front is that Arizona is in Mountain Time for most of the NHL regular season, so pairing them with Colorado makes sense.

The other option would be bring in Colorado to the Pacific and move Edmonton and Calgary (because they're not splitting them) to the Central, but either Vancouver would want them to stay or logistics of Divisional trips would be wonky. Not that the travel miles are all that much better for the Ducks/Kings to Alberta or the rest of the Central to Arizona, but whatever. Moving Arizona is probably just the cleanest move.

Plus, who can't wait for the 2022 Battle of the Whiteouts for a Winnipeg-Arizona* playoff** series?

** - Assuming the Coyotes ever make the playoffs again

Seattle will have the same expansion draft rules as Vegas.

Probably not. They're still good terms for Seattle, but several factors undermine the likelihood of the lightning in a bottle the Knights were.

The draft pool won't be quite as deep. Sure, it'll have been 4 years since Vegas, but it takes longer than that for the pool to get back up to the same quality. Also, the other 30 GMs have a better understanding of what they're collectively getting into, and have more time to plan ahead. If they play it cool, they can temper these cap raises to not be in a bind and looking to offload big contracts, and plan better so they aren't yoked with too many NMCs and long contracts (not gonna hold my breath, but the opportunity is there). Also, it's unlikely Seattle gets the galvanizing local tragedy as the season starts.

They're still favorable terms, and I think Seattle could be a playoff team, but I don't think we see Las Vegas 2.0. Most people (GMs, analysts, and fans) had no idea just how good the Knights were getting it, but Seattle won't be holding as many cards, come expansion draft time. Just my $0.02.

You’re giving NHL upper management FAR too much benefit of the doubt

I also think teams might be more willing to just let players get drafted this time around, instead of the two for one "we'll trade you this guy in exchange for you drafting this other guy".

They were just THAT dumb last time. The Panthers left their leading goal-scorer exposed for no good reason, the Penguins traded to ensure that the Knights took Fleury when everyone knew they should anyway, and teams made all kinds of deals where they ended up losing multiple pieces instead of just sitting back and letting Vegas pick.

Jesus - 2021? I guess that’s for the 21-22 season? So counting this, there’s nearly 3 full seasons before this team starts. Isn’t that a little much in this day and age?

Itd suck tuck to be a fan and have to wait that long after the announcement

There's the possibility of a work stoppage in 2020.

This poses an interesting question, regarding the CBA negotiations. Do they push for an 84 game season, and play a 16x2, 8x3, 7x4 season, or deal with two division teams shorted a meetup on a rotating basis?

I'm inclined to say the latter, but it seems really counterintuitive to this divisional rivalry the league loves to shove down our throats.

AYFKM?

The owners will pay a $650 million expansion fee, up from the $500 million the Vegas Golden Knights paid to join the league just two years ago. Leiweke said arena renovations will cost $800 million and the addition of a state-of-the-art practice facility makes it a total investment of over $1.5 billion.

How could you invest $1.5B into this league? I get that it's government and private, but according to Forbes (not the most reliable, but the best we have) there's only 4 teams worth >1B, and only 10 total worth 650M or more.

I have been dreaming of this day since at least 2007. As a lifelong Seattleite, I am very excited for this. :D

I think they're also viewing this as a necessary in-road to getting the Sonics back. That's the only way I can make sense of it.
