Yeah, obviously. And trolling isn't limited to ignorant conservatives. It is part of being on the (terribly) wrong side of an argument. But he wasn't just gonna go and go and go unless several others on here kept him going. 

 

I don't think there's some grand liberal plot on this website. But I do see how people can feel that way if the only voices representing the opposite side of the argument get suspended for expressing that wrong opinion. And while I know it's not the opinion itself but HOW that opinion gets shared that leads to the suspension, I do think there's a fair amoungof poking the bear to get that reaction.

Viola73 came in here on his own accord, posted his thoughts, and people responded to them. That he doesn’t respond well to that isn’t really my problem to deal with. If you want to look at that as “poking the bear,” that’s fine, but I respectfully disagree.

 

I’m not going to ask the rest of the community to stop responding to someone because they’re an unstable poster. If you can’t deal with other viewpoints like an adult, I’m not going to sit here and protect you by telling everyone else to leave you alone.

It's always the same, though.  A lot of the conservatives that are intelligent realize that this may not be the place for them to vocalize loudly and drastically, and the few times they choose to speak up it's better to argue with references, statistics, and bearing an open mind.  Agreeing to disagree is totally viable and encouraged, but when the subject matter isn't flexible (say for instance football legacy > respecting the horrors done to child rape victims of which the university and Paterno enabled), you shouldn't be so insistent on banging the table.

 

It got to the point where he felt cornered, rightfully so, and he did what stupid people usually do, tearing down those debating against him.  He deserved what he got, and hopefully he enjoys the next few weeks of reveling in facebook comments that he proudly stirred up some idiot liberals, doing God's work, and RIP JoePa, etc.

Viola73 is a buffoon (and I've always wondered if his screen name was an homage to Frank Viola?), but he's one of the lone, out conservative voices on these boards. Those voices tend not to last very long. Part of it is because so many of them act like damn fools. But I do wonder if there's a chilling effect among the more temperate of those voices.

Perhaps.  I'm not terribly proud of overreacting to Viola being a clown, but I couldn't help myself.  I don't think these issues really leak elsewhere around the board, however.  The politics thread seems pretty spirited and tempered compared to the old days when Tank would have uncontrollable diarrhea anytime a conservative notion was shot down.  The police thread also feels like it's not overcooked.  We're doing alright, but I'd say if anything there's no active witch hunt for conservatives.  This community just doesn't tolerate idiots very well.

I agree. It is unfortunate. We do have intelligent, thoughtful conservative members here. And I would love to see them take a more active role in political discussions. 

It's kind of lose-lose. Let Viola keep insulting everyone and those posters go "Jeeze, I don't agree with liberals on gun control, but this guy is crazy" and they just stay silent. Suspend Viola and they may think "maybe there is a liberal conspiracy afoot."

 

At the end of the day I agree with crash. On a base level Viola earned his suspension for being unable to respond to differing opinions like an adult. 

 

The best I can personally hope for is that if we weed out the nonsense and just wait a while then our more intelligent conservative-leaning members may feel like they can come forth with their viewpoints without feeling like they're going to be lumped in with the perpetrators of said nonsense. 

 

And on top of all of this...this isn't a political issue. All sides can agree that covering up child rape is wrong. 

We can debate what role Joe Paterno played in that cover-up, but I don't see how that's a liberal-conservative divide.

I think that in a theoretical rational discussion this opens a key point.  Paterno does take a disproportionate amount of blame in the media and these discussions.   It is in part because he is the famous person and attracts more attention than all the others combined.  Also, though, nobody is trying to honor those others.   There is not going to be a Graham Spanier statue any time soon.  

 

So nobody is saying that Joe is worse than McQuery.  But I started this recent discussion with a story about players want the return of Paterno's, not McQuery's, statue.

 

And the fact that so many others turned the other way is 1) freigtening and a negative reflection on the University and 2) not a legitimate excuse for any one of them, including Paterno.

I just thought he was legitimately unintelligent, not a troll.  I was actually disappointed to see him suspended (especially multiple weeks with more possibly to come), because I too think that could be viewed as a censorship of opposing view (unless there was some threats or legit attacks that I missed, and I'll admit I didn't read all of his nonsensical posts.)  I'd hate for the next Viola to start citing the suspensions of Tank, Viola, Buster, and others when they start claiming that this is a liberal site (though I totally support most of those suspensions / bans.)

 

At the end of the day I think the community is better without people that can't discuss things on a mature / adult level (ironic coming from me, I know), but that action seemed a little hasty to this poster.  Again, I acknowledge I may not have read everything, and I don't feel strongly enough to go back and do so.

To be honest, I don't see the problem with "censoring" stuff like, "child rape is cool if you win football games".  There are limits to the level with which oppositional comments forment healthy discussions.

 

This is a private message board, not the government.  It's perfectly acceptable and legal to not issue (or immediately revoke) dinner invitations to boors who utter such views, and any punishment issued by the moderation team is akin to that rather than being tossed in jail.

As more of an observer than a participant on the boards lately, but a long time member, I've read this same message of "I'm not terribly proud...couldn't help myself" in regards with how you argue with other members a lot. The issues do leak around in that it's single handedly turned me off from even giving some of your creative endeavors a chance, when normally I'd be up for a listen. Maybe I'm one in the crowd, maybe I'm an island, but it's become noticeable enough to merit mention.
