  1. This is something that has been bugging me lately with regards to uniform matchups in general. NBA and NFL have been the worst, there just doesn’t seem to be enough thought as to how uniforms match up with each other. The Jazz used to do this with thier redrock sets too; they seemed to wear them against red color scheme teams like the Hawks, Bulls, and Heat way too often. I’d be in favor of a czar of some sort in each league that could veto matchups like these (if alternative options are feasible, of course). I don’t expect a team to care how a matchup looks with thier opponent, but for the best possible visible product, the league should.
  2. The Jazz are somehow 5-2. Yes, this year’s Jazz team, the one who did all the trades for all the picks and supposedly hopped aboard the tank train. It’s still very early and I’m trying really hard not to get ahead of myself here (I mean, I’m really resisting the urge to make myself believe this team could be basketball’s answer to the Moneyball A’s or something) but man, is this team fun to watch. I’m positively floored that they are as competitive as they are at the moment; compared to how checked out last year’s team was, this team is playing thier guts out and closing out games that, on paper, they probably shouldn’t be. I really don’t know how long it’s going to last and I’m still keeping myself grounded by acknowledging they could (and probably will) come back to earth at any moment, but at the very least this group has won me over, regardless of how many games they eventually wind up losing. It’s just a really fun group to watch and follow.
  3. Here’s the audio: Specifically, he thinks the A’s are out of the Coliseum within no later than five years, and while not explicitly predicting they’ll end up in Las Vegas, implied that it may be the most prudent option for them.
  4. Inspired by watching Facing Nolan on Netflix today, to put the scope of his career in perspective, Nolan Ryan pitched against these two uniforms:
  5. The Broncos uniforms not only revolutionized the aesthetics of the NFL, they revolutionized the aesthetics of the whole sport itself, regardless of level. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Miami’s and Oregon’s respective pushes of the aesthetic envelope at the college level came very shortly after the Broncos, and were variations of the same futuristic side panel and number font theme. Then high schools all over America followed suit to the point that nearly every matchup was a “pointy side panel vs. pointy side panel” look for a number of years (and maybe even still today in some cases). In terms of sports uniforms that “changed everything”, the Broncos have to be at or near the top. One could argue the Kansas City A’s pivoting to Kelly green and gold everything is up there, with its ushering a sort of color explosion in the 60’s-70’s MLB, and the Charlotte Hornets kicking the teal wave in sports off could be up there too. But the Broncos, at the very least, certainly revolutionized the look of football in a way I don’t think any other team has.
  6. Somebody signed off on that. My word. Between cases like this of bad combos in general and also bad matchup-related decisions (like the Jets wearing black pants against the Steelers, Browns wearing orange pants against the Bengals, Bengals wearing white helmet against the Dolphins, another white helmet team), I’m starting to think whomever has the final say in what combos teams wear these days have either lost thier collective marbles or just don’t care anymore.
  7. The only time I see the “report an ad” link is for a brief second after the ad plays, then is covered up by the next ad that pops up. There isn’t enough time to click it (and I question whether a crash would allow me to click it at all). While an ad is playing, I can only see the “X” button to close it out on the top right, the sound button on the bottom right, and “advertisement” on the bottom left.
  8. Probably more random than anything, but still intrigued me nevertheless: Last year’s World Series matchup featured the penultimate team of HOFer Eddie Mathews - the Astros - vs. his primary team - the Braves. This year’s matchup features the penultimate team of HOFer Robin Roberts - again, the Astros - vs. his primary team - the Phillies. If the Phillies win the series, then the primary team of both HOFers will have won thier respective series.
  9. Yeah, the Phillies’ crowd definitely sounded loud watching on TV. Sounded like an awesome place to watch a game and a really fun environment. I’m really enjoying this Phillies/Padres series. It’s been very entertaining with a lot of back-and-forth, and a great “don’t care who wins, just enjoying baseball” kind of series. It’s the perfect contrast to Yankees/Astros, which has the plug-your-nose feel to it and would just prefer the series end in the two somehow eliminating each other.
  10. Eh, one preseason and two games in, I’m still not a fan of the Jazz rebrand. The new black-accented court is kind of dreary-looking too, especially with the black seats in the stands (installed a couple years ago). I’m sure the intention was to look “sleek” or “clean” or whatever, but it looks really dull instead. It could be that I’m still used to Kelly green seats at the arena and Jazz courts bringing either a lot or “enough” color into the arena, as opposed to what they have now. Of the new uniforms, the only one I’ve (just slightly) warmed up to most is the black one, only because black is a much better background for the yellow to work on. The massive football jersey numbers are still goofy, though. Seeing it in action now, the white jersey suffers from yellow being a really jarring trim color when placed atop white, it’s too bright and doesn’t work nearly as well on white as it does on black. I doubt the yellow uniform is going to change my mind when it hits the court. That thing’s just doomed. It doesn’t help it’s case either that there were local beat writer rumblings that the Jazz were maneuvering to wear it as little as possible in favor of more purple games.
  11. Can’t believe this Jazz team not only managed to beat the Nuggets, but did so by 20 points. And the young talent on the team actually looked…kinda…good? At the very least, they played very tough and were much more entertaining than I expected them to be. It’s one game and I still think they’re going to be a win/loss dumpster fire this season, but 1) it’s just nice to win one and 2) it might actually be a fun dumpster fire to watch after all.
  12. Yeah, coaching attire has kind of taken a weird turn lately. I don’t mind the pivot away from suits - I can imagine coaches are much more comfortable on the court without them - but I haven’t really seen anything a coach has worn since then and said “yep, that’s what they should be wearing.” I feel like they need something a little more deliberate than “here’s your generic bad quarter zip in team colors”, but certainly less lax and silly than “here’s your team issued warmup jacket and sweats.” On that note, Will Hardy’s attire is a head-scratcher because it’s really kind of cool outfit in a vacuum, but it’s also probably too casual for sideline wear to the point that he really looks like a fan that had wandered onto the court and snuck into team huddles. It doesn’t help that the purple logo on the black shirt wasn't as strong a contrast and was a bit too understated, making it look like a plain black shirt from certain distances on the broadcast. As nice of an outfit that it is, I don’t think that’s the solution to coaching attire either.
  13. That was Michael Kay, who is the PBP for the Yankees on YES Network, of all teams. I don’t know anything about him as a person so he could be a good guy, but he’s easily my least favorite PBP guy in the league. Something about his voice (when he’s actually speaking and not excessively pausing) just has this “dude who wears Under Armour exclusively, won’t stop talking about his car, and posts only Crypto articles on his LinkedIn” streak to it and the fact he’s not only calling playoff games, but is somehow the voice of the Yankees absolutely baffles me.
  14. That’s why I said “throwback-inspired” rather than direct throwback; I don’t want the old logo back as-is, it needs a fair bit of cleaning up to work today. But I do like your suggestion of splitting the difference, I think the right Dolphins logo can be found in that area. And definitely agree that it ought to follow the general shape of the 90’s logo, which was much better structurally. My biggest gripes with the Dolphins current logo is the belly flop position that I can’t unsee, and it also looks really awkward and sometimes over-tilted on a helmet. It’s just bad in concept and function.
  15. I feel like the Dolphins are a case of really good uniforms, really bad logo. I have no problem with the uniforms themselves (I really like them, actually), but if a uniform change to something throwback-inspired is what it would take to get rid of the belly flop dolphin once and for all, then I favor that option. It’s ultimately better to have your whole identity in order rather than just a part of it, and I feel like that switch would cover all the bases well.
  16. IIRC, Ben’s either dating or married to the head of Jazz social media, so I feel like there’s some sort of “like these or you’re sleeping on the couch” ultimatum at play here. That’s the only explanation I’ve got for his defense of an obvious dumpster fire. That off-center 2 on Sexton’s jersey is burned into my brain now. If that thing remains into the season, that’s one more L you can add to the, I dunno, 55 they’re already bound to get this year.
  17. Yeah, this was always one of my fears for the program. The first fear was that the program would severely dilute teams’ brands (which has happened), but the second was definitely the potential for ideas to run out quickly (which is happening now in real time, team by team). In my opinion, the NBA could really stand to re-evaluate its uniform program and either scrap the city program altogether, or replace it with something that sticks much more to teams’ core brands.
  18. Not a big fan of the Sixers city uniform at all, but I have to admit, I love the court. I’m really digging the vintage key nod and wood staining.
  19. Yes, it comes and goes for me but lately I’ve had a fair bit of issues on mobile. The biggest problem has been that the site seems to crash occasionally when typing a post/reply. No other actions have caused problems that I’ve noticed. A couple of days ago I had to refresh the page something like six times just to type a reply out. Clearly this post made it out so it’s working at the present moment, but it’s an issue I’ve noticed for sure.
  20. So… I really like the idea of the blue/red horizontal stripe. I don’t mind that at all. I’m not into using black though, as black with blue/red has been pretty strongly cornered by the Clippers lately and this is swerving a bit too close into LAC territory (granted, it’s a territory that shouldn’t exist, but it does). I’m also not a fan of three-letter abbreviations on jerseys, and the left aligned front numbers look really awkward. This all being said, I like the horizontal stripes so much that I’d be okay with an improved version of this. Keep the stripes, make the base navy, spell out “DETROIT”, then right align the numbers, and I think they would have really had something.
  21. Georgia in red vs. Oregon in green? I wonder how colorblind viewers are enjoying that one. Nothing against either uniform in a vacuum, but red vs. green usually isn’t a great idea.
  22. This is, unfortunately, the 100% truth. It look me longer to see that than others, but the fallout of the Clippers series collapse and last year’s not-so-subtle regression was very clear writing on the wall that this core wasn’t going any farther than it already had. Ultimately, they had a great deal of individual talent, but the team itself just didn’t gel and wasn’t really built for a sustained run. I think that’s precisely what makes this tear down easier to swallow for me than I would have expected; as much as it sucks to fall short again and watch the Gobert/Mitchell era end, this step is absolutely necessary for any shot at a title down the road. The team frankly needed to be built in a much different way than it was, and the hauls so far give them the flexibility to work that out in a way they couldn’t a couple of months ago.
  23. First thing’s first: I’m going to miss Spida. He was one of the most fun-to-watch players to ever play here, and did a lot for the underprivileged in the Salt Lake community. Cleveland, you’re getting a good one. Onto what this means for Utah, this is clearly a rebuild and it’s clearly going to be tough sledding for a couple or more years. That said, the Jazz got about as great a haul to kick off a rebuild as you would hope from Gobert and Mitchell. Consider that they turned those two players into this: Collin Sexton Lauri Markkanen Ochai Agbaji (2022 14th pick) Malik Beasley Leandro Bolmaro Walker Kessler (2022 22nd pick) Jarred Vanderbilt Patrick Beverley, who was then flipped for Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson 7 1st-round picks 3 1st-round swaps …and that’s without even trading Bogdanovic or Conley (yet). I’m pretty excited by this haul and it certainly does a lot to make the sting of losing Gobert and Mitchell easier to bear. Maybe it’s the optimist in me, but I think the Jazz are now set up perfectly for a rebuild and it hopefully should be of the 2-4 year type rather than longer.
  24. I hadn’t gotten much into Soccer until a few years ago, so I too am not as versed in US kit tradition as others may be, but in looking at the list above of past kits, the only ones that look “right” as far as what I imagine the US kit should be are the Waldos and sashes. All others don’t provide the same feeling, they just seem kind of “there” to me. If I had my way, I’d go some variation of Waldo as the primary kit, navy with white sash as the secondary, and darker red with navy sash as a third.
  25. Two thoughts, one on-topic and one off-topic: 1. If Anaheim insists on keeping this color scheme, then compromising with the duck mask as a primary is the way to make it work, IMO. And by “making it work” I mean “not ideal, but it will do.” It’s still eggplant + jade + duck mask over everything, for me. 2. Palm trees on the cover of a hockey video game is really jarring. I get it, there’s a Ducks player on the cover and yeah, “grow the game etc etc”, but do they have to be standing in front of palm trees? It just seems forced is all.
