chrysleraspen08
The glowing puck might be making a return soon. Quote Bettman mentioned this with some pride on Monday as he was inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame, which counts Edward R. Murrow, Lucille Ball and Pat Sajak among its honorees. "While it was the subject of much discussion, and some derision, in 1996, the technology of Fox Sports' glowing puck was the precursor of the first-down line that has become standard practice for any football broadcast, and any number of innovations," he said. "Actually, we are working on a dramatically updated version of that technology, and we have plans to roll out updated player and puck tracking. We are literally going back to the future." Cosmic
I've thought for a while that the glow puck technology could be used to just make the puck blacker and more visible. The execution was very cheesy and 90s, but the idea was solid.
The_Admiral
It should be used on replays but never live action. 6 hours ago, Sodboy13 said: Lou Lamiorello accidentally explains why the NHL will never have widespread popularity: The frustrating thing about this is the kernel of truth that hockey, more than other sports, does require players to suppress a certain amount of "individuality" for a greater good. But that really just means most players can't go into business for themselves and ignore wide-open teammates. You can have teamwork and esprit de corps without turning everyone into androids. 2 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

What this will really help with is when there's madness in the crease and there's some question whether the puck crossed the line or not. The_Admiral
Yeah, it would do a lot for goal-line and offside calls. Oh, and a hearty LOL at Gary Bettman, the guy whose league has bungled one television contract after another when he wasn't taking the league off television altogether with lockouts, being inducted into a broadcasting hall of fame. 3 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

With the available technology we have today, there's really no reason why there shouldn't be sensors in the puck and along each line, with lights that illuminate when the puck crosses each line. It could eliminate any gray area when it comes to goals, icings, and offside calls.
Still MIGHTY
Didn't they try sensors or chips in the pucks, but couldn't create a puck strong enough that it wouldn't split in half every time it was shot/hit something? 1 Quote | ANA | LAA | LAR | LAL | ASU | CSULB | USMNT | USWNT | LAFC | OCSC | MAN UTD |

The Fox Trax pucks had it, and I don't remember them being blown apart all the time. That could just be an effect of not having every single thing in the world on the Internet back then, though. The_Admiral
If I recall, the issue with the FoxTrax pucks was that they never froze quite right and were taking funny bounces as a result. Of course, nowadays, everyone's ice is such crap that even normal pucks are bouncing all over the place, so maybe no one cares now. 1 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

The pucks were cut in half, the tracker inserted and then glued back together. I don't ever recall one splitting apart during play. With the advancements since the 90s, if they can somehow develop one that can stand being frozen, there is no reason why the NHL can't adapt Premier League goal line technology for hockey. And instead of the system signalling the ref of a goal, have it directly turn on the goal light.
