Really disappointing news for nerds like me who would check the site almost every day, and a confusing decision on the part of the Capitals. The point of buying the site is I guess to keep other teams from having access to the resources, but there's going to be an inevitable copycat that comes in an fills the void. People on twitter have been mentioning Puckpedia as the best alternative, but their UI/UX seems much worse than CapFriendly's. Very unfortunate that the league couldn't have just bought CF and kept it free for the public. In a hard salary cap world, you need to have transparency with your fans on how all the rules work. I'm not 100% sure that cap-tracking should become a league enterprise just because I don't 100% trust the NHL with it, but I'm surprised TSN, which is a league partner but somewhat at arm's length relative to Rogers, doesn't get in on it. I'd expect a good Canadian iteration of a cap-tracker to have "THIS AMERICAN TEAM DOESN'T PAY STATE INCOME TAX" in big bright letters over the teams that just happen to keep making conference finals over and over.
