I think that this spells the end of franchise continuity in the NHL. Only MLB survives. For now.

It could be argued that it died when the Cleveland Barons merged with the North Stars, only to later "un-merge" and become the San Jose Sharks.

That certainly did a number on "continuity".

But... he technically remains an owner - so what, does he attend owners' meetings?  Does the lineage die in 5 years?  Questions.  I have questions.

Bettman said that construction of a new rink has to be at least 50% complete within the 5 year window in order for the franchise to be reactivated. If that doesn't happen, Phoenix will just get the same consideration as any other potential expansion market after that point.

It ended already, when the Senators tried to pretend they were connected to the Silver Seven. Speaking of which, I still wish the =O= set was promoted to primary status.

The current iteration of the Sens has never pretended they're the same franchise as the original Senators. Yes, they brought back the name & have banners in the arena honouring the old Stanley Cup wins, but that's no different than the Jets 2.0 having Avco Cup banners & the old Jets retired numbers in their rink.

We are in agreement on the =O= set though.

I'm not gonna lie, the amount of AI slop being regurgitated in the replies instills me with a genuine and potentially homicidal sense of dread.

also, Swarm is the only correct option. Outlaws is fine but boring, Yeti and Mammoth are reddit bait with syntax issues (also the Avs are right there), and the rest are non-starters.

I think Mountaineers is a sneaky good name; the only question is how much the Avalanche would throw a fit about it.

Utah Venom was the best name we got, so far. It's also distinct from the Avalanche.

https://fronterasdesk.org/content/1881684/former-glendale-mayor-scruggs-says-shes-happy-arizona-coyotes-found-new-home-utah

Quote

What went through your mind when you first heard the Coyotes were being sold and moved to Salt Lake City?

ELAINE SCRUGGS: Truthfully, Mark, I felt very happy for them. I think that they're gonna have their first chance finally to be successful as a hockey team and not just an adjunct to a developer's plans to make a lot of money.

Why do you think it didn't ultimately work out in Glendale? We know what happened toward the end, with the disputes over payments and whether or not the city wanted the team to consider being the main tenant or a tenant at the arena. But during your tenure as mayor, what didn't happen that needed to happen?

SCRUGGS: Mark, I don't believe that the Valley population has a real interest in ice hockey. Maybe never will. All the knocks that they didn't draw people to the games because it was so far away are a bunch of baloney. They didn't draw people when they were downtown Phoenix. If you think about it, in the 20-some-odd years that the Coyotes team was in the Valley — and I don't know how many exactly — they never grew their base beyond 4,000 to 5,000 people. What does that really say? I say it has nothing to do with the location. It has to do with the product.

Nice job, Elaine, sounds like you really hit the nail on the head here with regard to Phoenix's weakness as a hockey market and the Coyotes' weakness as a real-estate speculation scheme, would have been a real shame if you had voted for Glendale to give the NHL $50 million in taxpayer money to keep the Coyotes there.

Washington apparently has an agreement in place to purchase CapFriendly, and will be shutting the site down in early July.

Really disappointing news for nerds like me who would check the site almost every day, and a confusing decision on the part of the Capitals. The point of buying the site is I guess to keep other teams from having access to the resources, but there's going to be an inevitable copycat that comes in an fills the void.

People on twitter have been mentioning Puckpedia as the best alternative, but their UI/UX seems much worse than CapFriendly's. Very unfortunate that the league couldn't have just bought CF and kept it free for the public. In a hard salary cap world, you need to have transparency with your fans on how all the rules work.

CapFriendly having replaced some other site which itself replaced CapGeek. (FAKE EDIT: General Fanager was the one in between.) I'm not 100% sure that cap-tracking should become a league enterprise just because I don't 100% trust the NHL with it, but I'm surprised TSN, which is a league partner but somewhat at arm's length relative to Rogers, doesn't get in on it. I'd expect a good Canadian iteration of a cap-tracker to have "THIS AMERICAN TEAM DOESN'T PAY STATE INCOME TAX" in big bright letters over the teams that just happen to keep making conference finals over and over.

Oddy enough, other way around: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/capitals-reach-agreement-to-purchase-capfriendly-website/

NHL teams that had agreements to use their tools/Application Programming Interface (API) recently received notice that these contracts would be terminated. This led to speculation that one club was buying the site, and all information pointed to the Capitals.

So they were actually acting as a vendor to teams and providing some sort of tracking services beyond what we civilians get. That's why the Crapitals want it gone.
