NHL Anti-Thread: Bad Business Decision Aggregator

Guys this is a fascinating conversation. But WTF does it have to do with the Phoenix Coyotes?

Phoenix has great PT IMO, but they were stupid enough to put the Coyotes as far away from reasonable PT as they possibly could. It's been said before, but squeezing them into the U.S. Airways Center with bad sightlines would've still been better than moving them to that spacious covered parking lot in Afghanistan. It would be comparable to moving the Golden State Warriors to Lodi or Stockton. Or Gilroy (If you want to get nit picky about location).

The Simpsons did two golden age episodes on inherently flawed urban renewal schemes and we didn't heed either one.

Marge vs. The Monorail and what was the other one?

Whether the logistics of America West were better is immaterial; the Coyotes weren't economically viable as a tenant of the Suns. Of course, they aren't economically viable with a master lease, either, because they just went from not collecting their parking revenue to not having parking revenue, but let's not perpetuate this canard that the team would've been just fine if they had stayed downtown and closer to their alleged power base in Scottsdale. They were losing millions of dollars a year downtown to the point of possible relocation (Portland) there, too.

Of course. Duh.

Every time I drive by the new, big, ugly, down-town casino in Cincinnati I think about that episode.

And now for some actual news:

Darren Dreger@DarrenDreger

24m

NHL will continue to meet prospective buyers, but it's clear time is running out and relocation must be considered.

in regard to the Coyotes. Quebec City, you're on the clock!

Anything coming from Darren Dreger regarding league operations may as well come from the league's press office. Bill Daly's probably scrubbing Dreger's breakfast off his hand right now.

This is the last, desperate gasp.

We really should have a party if they finally bite it.

And just like that it's been leaked that some Canadian named George Gosbee is the newest potential savior. The Ice Edge guys are being talked about as minority investors. They always are.

And I'll take Rose Marie to block, Peter.

Seriously, what intelligent Canadian businessman wouldn't buy a hockey team to keep it in Arizona when it was on the verge of moving to Canada?

Now my guess is he swoops in at the last minute, they need all summer to hash a deal out, old people file lawsuits, and they play a fifth year under league ownership.

I knew that the new regime in Glendale took the gigantic subsidies to the new owner off the table, but I wasn't certain if the $25 mil a year welfare check to the league would continue. If that is off the table, I think the Coyotes are gone for sure. We know that Bettman has his foolish pride, but I can't see him (and the owners) throwing more money into the fire now that there is no light at the end of the tunnel in Glendale.

They're also exploring having someone else manage the arena other than a hockey team. Seems to me they're setting up the writing to be on the wall.

Phoenix's version of "The Balkan"?

No, this guy's money appears to be legitimate. I just don't understand why the Ice Edge guys are still being allowed to hang around. They've glommed onto Hulsizer, Jamison, and now this guy, and every bid they're involved with fails.

I love a good conspiracy theory, so bear with me. If Gosbee buys the team right now to keep it in Glendale, he's the only one in line. He buys the team for maybe $100M or so? Say he absorbs $150M in losses over the next 5-6 years; that brings you to $250M invested, and then he can do the whole song and dance about how he tried to make it work and blah blah blah and move the team then (maybe by then Gary Bettman will have accidentally exposed himself to the Sun and vaporized). Now imagine if the NHL put the Coyotes up for auction and said, "Quebec, Saskatoon, Seattle, Vegas... wherever you want to move 'em, go crazy." I think you'd get at least $250M-$300M for the team in that situation and there'd obviously be multiple bidders... you're not guaranteed to come out of it with a team. Gosbee is only in his mid-40's, so he has plenty of time to see this plan through.
