That's the point Stephen A was trying to make, although he didn't do the greatest job presenting his argument. Ichiro never chased down and beat Hank Aaron's HR record, played shortstop for the New York Yankees, or signed the first real mega deal in the league's history. Bonds was a jerk, A-Rod was disliked, and Jeter was boring and spoke in clichés. They're not part of baseball's zeitgeist for anything they did off of the baseball field (unless you count steroids, but I don't think that changes anything).
Sport
After all that hullabaloo Maria Taylor and ESPN couldn't reach an agreement on a contract extension. Statements from ESPN and Maria Taylor - ESPN Press Room U.S. I wish her well, but I can't say I'll miss her on College Gameday.

The_Admiral
I didn't like that she got a guy fired from a place she didn't even work at when the guy only came out of retirement because he has an autistic son (the real kind, not the quirky-on-the-internet kind) to leave money behind for. Everyone could have defused the situation if they wanted to but she used her victimhood to leverage her personal brand. Disgusting. Hope she got her "Stephen A. Smith money" from Comcast. The_Admiral
Dan McNeil from 670 the Score in Chicago, the guy who tweeted that she was dressed for the porn awards because his gimmick is that of a porn addict. She made a big deal about how she was emotionally devastated, the whole world reported him to HR, and Julie DiCaro wrote a blog post about what a bad guy he was. CubsFanBudMan
I only ever liked Mac with Spiegel. Just not my style, although I realize I must be in the minority since they just kept bringing him back. Forcing it, at times. I'd hope he's kept enough from his radio glory days and side deals to leave for his son. But I can't say I was sorry to see him leave 670 - even if I was surprised that incident is what finally passed the threshold. Hard to see him as a sympathetic figure, though. He generally came and went as he pleased for a decade. Maybe I switched the dial too often to learn why he should be.

I think it's good practice not to comment on womens clothes or bodies in 2021. However, I do think Rachel Nichols was done dirty. She was recorded without her permission and she was speaking candidly about her career and is allowed to do so. Plus I still can't place Maria Taylor after all of this. Maybe she's good at being on TV? So are a lot of people. There's got to be more than just that. 3 Quote 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags
CubsFanBudMan
Just catching up on this thread and I think NIL in college offers a sidebar to the UFC "reporter" conversation. Media "access" has always been the line in the sand, and social media has erased that gap for many, while some institutions clung to gatekeeping by banning it. The pandemics's Zoom interviews and credential limits leveled the playing field even more. Not sure if "normal" reporter scrums and locker room access will ever return for everyone. Now with NIL, another line has been crossed, media outlets paying for "exclusive" access: https://awfulannouncing.com/ncaa/texas-am-players-paid-10000-exclusive-interviews-texags-nil.html The newspapers *would* *never* - and in all honesty, these websites will likely stop after the shock value (or sponsors for it) disappears - but paying to play certainly caused a ripple effect among journalists. Maybe not Addison Rae-level (lol), but...
CS85
I've never liked McNeil from a listener perspective. His bit has been antiquated for a long time, but when he stepped on the largest possible rake at the worst possible time, it was time to put Old Yeller down. It also gives me no satisfaction that Julie DiCaro is still wrenching some sad little career for herself at Deadspin and other places when she is, in earnest, one of the worst sports writers on the internet. The_Admiral
I wasn't a big Mac fan, either, but I respect the idea of sports radio as corner-bar guy talk. It can't all just be reading stuff you found on Deadspin that morning. Julie DiCaro is amazing because she is widely disliked by people who actually read her terrible work, but people who work in media with her absolutely adore her and would die to protect her. I think it's because she does stuff like dox wrong-thinking people on Twitter and report them to their bosses to get them fired, a stunt that probably gets you in more trouble than it's worth if you still work for an actual media outlet. The_Admiral
Yeah, I think she's suing Barstool right now for making fun of her lousy book, which should make the right-thinking love her even more. The “right-thinkers” like to make fun of silly butthurt lawsuits like these. Are you familiar with Maddox’s lawsuit, Addison Cain, or Homestuck? All parts of the political spectrum love a good “lolsuit.” 2 Quote MLB: Project 32 (Complete), MLB: The Defunct Saga (Complete)

From what I understand, the lawsuit came about after Kirk Minihane had one of his interns read through the entirety of her book live on his show (or maybe it was just a YouTube stream or something), but I have no idea, nor do I care to look into, if the lawsuit is for a defamation thing or a copyright thing.
GDAWG
This will likely be the NHL on ESPN Studio crew: Which likely means we'll see Kevin Weeks and Jeff Gorton on Sportscenter every week during the NHL season.

Red Comet
I can only look forward to what happens the next time Maria Taylor doesn’t get a promotion that is out of her skillset has an issue with NBC. Grab the popcorn, it’s going to be lit. It’s amazing that after torching her bridge with ESPN that she can still get work. Eh, NBC has been mismanaged for about 25 years now so what’s one more rake corporate steps on in hiring another Cluster B case?
JayMac
I saw that Kenny Mayne is doing a Olympics show with Cari Champion (I think that was her). Does NBC just pull a car up to the ESPN HQ and wait for the anchors to leave or be let go so they can hand them a contract?
