I don't think he is an intentional, overt racist, but maybe all of his time living in Boston has given him a bit of a blind spot when it comes to casually offensive comments like this. You'd think he'd know better during a season where multiple members of the media have already had to place their feet directly in their mouths in regards to comments they made about Ohtani.

This is a good point. At the same time, it's not asking too much for a media company with a top podcast to be a little sensitive to really bad, outdated and lazy jokes about the one-time there's an Asian-focused Marvel movie.

Every superhero movie is China-focused. That's the point of them. That's why they'll stop what they're doing to be like "THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT IS OBLIGATED TO PROTECT HONG KONG" and John Cena has to apologize for calling Taiwan a country instead of a rogue province.

I mean I think Simmons can toss off casual dumb lazy racist jokes because he's a very typical 50-something aging white bro; his Boston connections are pretty incidental there. It's too bad because it would be nice to have at least one cultural figure against the corporate superhero industrial complex.

Tom McCarthy is the Phillies TV PBP guy.  Looks like he's doing AZ @ Tennessee.  Last time he had a NFL conflict they "called up" his son, who does PBP for a minor league team somewhere.

Not just Wilson.

I'm assuming Kyler Murray is the reason most of Oklahoma's getting Cards-Titans, and also that Justin Herbert is why southern Oregon gets the Chargers-WFT matchup.

Did you read Strauss' piece about Gawker and its role in the decline of American discourse?

I thought it was overblown but interested in your reaction.

I'd agree it's a little overblown. I think that the extent to which the Gawker house style has percolated through the rest of media has been a net negative, but I don't it's spread far and deep enough for us to pin too much blame on them just yet. Jia Tolentino is at the New Yorker and is more or less on her best behavior, for instance.

If anything, I would skip one level above Gawker and cast a critical eye to Something Awful, which not only -- in conjunction with private universities -- produced a lot of the Gawker writers, but also produced a lot of the Gawker-adjacent, if you will, media personalities who started Weird Left Twitter and now litter the podcasting and publishing scenes. Diminishing your adversaries by responding to their wordy screeds with "pee is stored in the balls" or "fill my hole, daddy" predates or is outside of Gawker, and if that's a problem with discourse, it's beyond that website.

Goons really are the scourge of the Internet. It was also the first site to host goatse so the site producing a bunch of huge gaping buttholes was only a matter of time.

You know, I think people watched early Daily Show and confused their specific brand of cynicism with any and all cynicism anywhere. John Stewart was always a master of connecting outrage, sarcasm and heart in a way that had a point of view that was very much not nihilism.

Many other media saw the jokes and swears and thought that was enough. And so rather than understanding the Daily Show spoke to people because it was speaking a specific brand of truth to power, they thought it was instead enlightened detachment; the kind where Maureen Down invites Mitch McConnell to her dinner parties. That wasn't it.

At its best, Gawker did a certain of speaking truth to power through a very online millennial lens. At its worst, it was a pornographic, nihilist scold. But even then, it wasn't as bad as the kind of people who are still giving modern day Bill Maher a TV show. Or, say, the MMA worm-eating enthusiast $100 million.

October 26, 2007 was the day SomethingAwful discovered one specific resident of Ruckersville, Virginia.

Little did that poster know that this discovery would kick off over a decade of concentrated trolling, give birth to numerous other goon-like sites, and end with parental incest.

Anyway, who's paying $9 a month for Ethan Strauss?

Some people really need to have been poor in their lives.

Yeah, I'm not really familiar with his work, but what's on this blog, I do find interesting. There's a good assessment of the Rachel Nichols situation and something about Nike that I'm working my way through. Like all Substacks but one, however, I don't feel inclined to pay for more than what's there for free. I'm sure enough people do, though, but I'm not among them.

I had been moderately curious as to why I hadn't seen Liam McHugh on NBC either last Thursday or this past Sunday, since he'd held a role on FNIA in recent years along with a role on Notre Dame broadcasts. In short, it seemed like he had something going with NBC even without the NHL. But I guess this explains why. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall once NBC hired Maria Taylor or something, and thought he was being squeezed out.

But my goodness. They've gone almost as far in on reuniting the NBC crew as they possibly can.

Quite a bit of NHL on NBC spiritual successor feelings like we had expected with some of the early leaks, but I think they have enough new blood to make it their own thing. Having Jonesy in a better situation on the call rather than the studio should work better and I think having Liam a bit more loose like they were after Game 5 this year on NBCSN will be a good thing as well. Obviously love them picking up Burke. Only thing though is compared to ESPN's Too Many Cooks approach where it looks like they've hired anyone and everyone that didn't work at NBC but wanted to do US hockey television, TNT's looks a little thin and they're gonna need another 2 or 3 announcing teams set up come playoff time, especially if it works out where they've got 2 games on TNT and 2 on TBS a night like it's been mumbled about. Probably could say the same for the regular season as I don't think people realize TNT's gonna have a huge bulk of the TV proper national games in the regular season (at least 72!)

Oh, and release the blasted national TV schedule already so I know what games I'll need ESPN+ for. OITGDNHL do you have 2 new broadcast partners and it's 4 weeks before the season starts and we still know all of like 10 national telecasts, even a week after getting the Olympic thing out of the way
