The bandwagoners made that a meme, one the team's marketing department capitalized on, much to my chagrin. For older fans (like myself), the whole "Even Year Bulls**t" thing was pretty tiresome this year and last, seeing it all over the internet, sports talk radio, etc. I also thought it had the effect of demeaning the team's accomplishments, like they only won through some lucky confluence instead of their own abilities. I know this makes me sound like a bad fan, but I felt a little bit of relief when the Cubs eliminated the Giants because it killed the EYBS meme.

Here, you also see how winning changes a fanbase. It inspires some members of said fanbase to prove themselves as "true" fans as opposed to bandwagoners. Winning can also alienate some pre-winning fans.

Heh.  I know.  The part that I just repeated right there was immediately followed by this:

A lot of people come out of the woodwork who don't know how to act and everyone thinks that's how you all just act.  Admittedly, out of the three examples I mentioned, the Giants' marketing was being the loudest, the Cardinals' claims are innocuous and misguided at most, and the Sox... well that's wholely true.  :P

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer's long-dormant twitter account now has TWO tweets:

wow

That blows me away.  Like that thing won't need to be touched for a damn long time, a monument to the Cubs ineptitude, now finds itself vacant of purpose.  It's glorious.

FiveThirtyEight is quickly becoming Nate Aluminum's batting average - which is great if you're playing in a softball league. .538 isn't so good when you hang your hat on your ability to read polling numbers and predict outcomes.

My Nate Aluminum idea is gaining steam! Excellent.

That almost sounds like the situation in the Bay Area. Not to a T or anything, but somewhat similar.

Haven't quite properly congratulated the Cubs and everyone for some reason, so here you go: CONGRATULATIONS! I'm honestly so happy for you guys. You deserved it 100% and you deserve some happiness after years of misery. I can only hope my Orioles will follow in their footsteps someday.

Enjoy it, guys. And congrats to the Cubs.

This is what I said this morning. When Kluber, Lindor and a few others reach the end of their current deals they'll be snagged by the Dodgers, yankees and Cubs who can afford to overpay them, not just pay above what Cleveland offers. We could still make the playoffs next year but unless the stars align as well as they did this year I'm not sure we'll see Progressive and Quicken Loans treating fans to a double dip possibility next October. I absolutely hope I'm wrong, but it's just the pessimist in me that sees the same thing that happened after 1997.

The team didn't really fall apart after 97. They made the playoffs in 98, 99, and 01. Of course, the rest of the AL Central at that time was garbage (The White Sox were okay, won the division in 2000, but the Twins, Tigers, and Royals were consistently awful) so coming out of that division wasn't that difficult.

LOL at this story - the Columbus Blue Jackets had an off day on Wednesday and Thursday so a bunch of them drove up to Cleveland for the game. Brandon Dubinsky instagrammed a picture of his ticket and then couldn't get in the game because someone used his picture to counterfeit a ticket. He eventually got in with a different ticket. Don't take pictures of your tickets!

That would mean more than half of Cook, Lake, DuPage, Will, Kane, McHenry, Kendall, Grundy, Lake IN, Porter, and Kenosha Counties all at the parade. I dunno about that one!

The city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications estimates that about 5 million turned out for the parade and the rally.

I've had the "Go Cubs Go" song in my head for 3 days now and I think I need a lobotomy.

I do heartily recommend some of Steve Goodman's other songs, like "Lincoln Park Pirates," "City of New Orleans," "The Dutchman," "Election Year Rag," "You Never Even Call Me By My Name," and "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request." I believe "Go Cubs Go" was written because someone at the Tribune told Steve "hey, that was kinda lousy of you to write a sad song about the Cubs, can you write a happy one?", so he did, and then he died. Some say it was leukemia that killed Steve Goodman, but others, well...
