College Football Uniforms - 2017 Season

This combo illustrates one of the major problems with their new set, the fact that all of the crimson (and white, actually) uniform elements don't have even the slightest hint of gray on them. Their school colors are crimson and gray, yet combos such as this one make it seem like they're a crimson and white school. Their last set had a much better distribution of colors between all of the different uniform elements.

When they first unveiled these I felt the same way. I thought they were way too boring and over-simplified, but after seeing them in action last week I really appreciated the simplicity of the single color numbers with the rich crimson and I thought the gray pants worked really well. It has a traditional look and feel, but is the dark gray and custom number font give it let you know it's a contemporary design. On the field, the uniform had a great collegiate look and feel that was really cool.

Sure, they looked fine with the gray pants (though I'd argue that the crimson uniform elements still needed some sort of gray on them), but this all-crimson combo illustrates the problem with the simplification and single-color numbers, the fact that they look like a crimson and white school rather than crimson and gray whenever their combos don't include the gray helmets and/or pants. Their last set, while not perfect and in need of some simplification, made much better use of crimson, gray, and white in the different uniform elements, making it so there was no confusing them for a red and white school rather than crimson and gray. This new set just doesn't look like WSU unless they wear the gray helmets and/or pants, mainly because gray doesn't appear at all in the crimson and white uniform elements.

I don't know. It still looks good, we still know it's Wazzu and they have traditionally worn just as much white as gray, but gray works very nicely. 

 

I get what you're saying about the lack of Gray on the crimson uniform, but I don't think it keeps us from recognizing WSU if they don't wear gray pants and/or helmets. I will say, though, that WSU would be well served to drop the white pants and stick to crimson and gray helmets and pants, which is part of a much larger problem in college football where every school thinks they need to have every piece of their uniform in every school color plus black and gray and wear something different every week so they don't have a consistent visual identity.

Too bad they couldn't have gotten full throwbacks, as the helmets look a bit off when paired with the modern jerseys and pants. Still, it's a pretty nice tribute to Coach Kush.

Gorgeous. I snagged a few of those helmet decals several years ago from a buddy who worked in their equipment room, so I know they've had them around for quite awhile. Great to see they're using them this weekend. I kind of wish they would've paired them with the Tillman throwbacks, though.

Illinois is showing an old picture of their helmet in the upper right, as the stripes are still visible.  I think they should have kept them.
