BBTV
Re: Pitch clock - definitely needed, as well as enforce the batters walking around for 30 seconds adjusting their grip and doing whatever else they do in between pitches. Roy Halladay was one of the best of the last couple decades, and he woudl just get the ball back from the catcher and pitch it again within a few seconds. His games were so fast, a trait that many of the great ones shared. I'm not sure why these other pitchers need to do everything they do in between pitches - if you're not good enough to just pitch then maybe you're not good. Re: intentional walk - I was opposed to this at first, but now I'm not seeing the point of the four pitches, considering you could just intentionally hit someone to save the pitchers arm and put them on 1B with one pitch vs four. In this era where pitch counts are so important, even though the IBB doesn't strain a pitcher's arm that much, it's still something and there's really no harm in getting rid of it. OnWis97
This is the best news coming from MLB in a very long time! I hate seeing 4 pitches thrown as it is a waste of time! Now if they just put Designated Hitters in the National League I may start watching baseball again. You are glad they are saving, I'd guess, about 4 seconds off the average game, but in order to watch, you want the NL to add about 10 minutes to its games? I am against the automatic walk rule. There are a ton of MLB games and one of the great things about going to one is the possibility of seeing something great/weird/rare, etc. One of those things would be a botched intentionally-thrown ball that sails over the catcher's head and advances a runner? Rare? Sure. But it's all about possibilities. Secondly, I hate that MLB is trying to pass this off as a meaningful solution to a problem. It's not. The intentional walk is practically dead anyway. Games are too long and while this will placate some fans this offseason, it won't take long to learn that this is not meaningful. In the long term, MLB is going to have to figure this out. Casual fans are their bread and butter and those people don't want to stay until 11:30 on a Tuesday. Intentional walks are not the problem. Extra-inning games really are not, either. It's the length of the nine-inning game. And the below problem is going to be difficult to deal with... On 2/12/2017 at 9:13 PM, HedleyLamarr said: The bigger issue is that the game is so specialized now, as well as teams are so fearful of overusing their expensive arms. It was a breath of fresh air seeing Andrew Miller pitch like 3-4 innings of relief. It used to be 5 starters, one closer, and 5-6 interchangeable relievers. Now there's a closer, an 8th-inning guy, a 7th inning guy, a left-handed specialist, a groundball specialist, and a long reliever. Starters generally get yanked before the 7th inning. (And now there's that philosophy the Rays and Royals used...starter goes a couple trips through the lineup, then it's onto the relievers, even if the SP has thrown just 65 pitches.) And in the NL, these pitching changes mean pinch hitters, and you burn through your reserves. And now there's defensive specialists, too. The spirit of the setup of baseball wasn't to use 18 guys in a 9-inning game. Every manager tries to alternate left/right-handed hitters and starting in the 7th (OK, 6th inning), the opposing team will bring out a different pitcher to face each one of them. And it's boring. I understand why it's happening...but it's boring. And my wife complains about it every time. And while that may be her problem, it's MLB's problem, too because their fans don't like it. Unfortunately, it's hard to institute any rules that will make the game go significantly faster. Can we really have a "must face two batters" rule? Can we really have a limit on how many tosses a pitcher makes to first? It's a problem because if you look at NFL and NHL games, they go about 2.5 hours. I really think it would be great if MLB could routinely have games go that long, but that would take drastic measures such as taking at least one commercial off of each inning break (and that's only about nine minutes) and very, very firm timing rules, which are hard to enforce in a clock-free sport. If baseball is truly on the verge of dying, as some think it is, they may have to go really drastic and look into 7-inning games. (My wife, who likes going to games and will spend the money, has semi-jokingly suggested that for years. And there are probably more fans like her at games than fans like me). We don't want that. But I really think they need to find a way, for now, for the majority of games to be on the short side of three hours. Automatic intentional walks is not the answer. Something in the area of pitch clocks, etc may be. A few less commercials...that would be nice but I am sure that throws the economics off. They need to be very careful being going all-in on the DH. I know most fans prefer the DH, but I am not sure that offsets the extra time. Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." SFGiants58
Investigation concludes that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez is to blame for fatal boating crash. Maybe this would be a good time for the Marlins to drop the memorial patch, and for the league to take serious steps towards addressing DUI problems.
