The Pointless Realignment Outpost

Had an idea, say the NHL disbanded. Then the teams came back setting up in a FIFA style system, where Canada, the US, Russian, Swedish, Finnish ect leagues all were under one governing body. They would have promotion/relegation and such. No real new expansions, just teams existing teams moving up. I determined the other teams based on last year's record, level, and market. I feel like with Canada, they would support their team no matter, like the English do with their soccer teams. I THINK I got every team. By my calculations, there were 62 canadian teams in the NHL, AHL, and CHL. I did 20 teams per league, then extra in the 3rd league

Here's a rather interesting idea I had...

The SEC, Big Ten and Big XII destroy the ACC raiding FSU, GT, Clemson, NC State, UNC, Duke, VT, UVA, Louisville and Cincinnati between the three conferences. Those three conferences are at 16 unlike the Pac 12. (The Pac 12 can expand and grab MWC schools or they can stay put for the purpose of this scenario) The remaining ACC is left with BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Wake Forest and Miami. The Notre Dame makes those five schools an offer to join a conference started by Notre Dame and broadcasted by NBC. The remaining ACC schools gladly accept and join ND and BYU. UConn is added as the 8th member.

Notre Dame

BYU

Miami

Wake Forest

Syracuse

Pittsburgh

Boston College

Connecticut

The conference thrives on big TV money, especially flowing out of New York, a market CFB conferences have long been trying to capture. NBC features a day game and a night game with the conferences' teams. ND's resurgence brings the other schools in the league back to their all-time best. The U dominates. Northeastern schools see the light of the Top 10 again. And BYU has a perfect season in 2024.

So what do ya think?

I had a idea with the 'Group of Seven' that is leaving the Big East.

Option A: The 'Group of Seven' remains together and forms an all basketball league with Butler, St. Louis and Xavier as the newest members. This 10 team league doesn't take the 'Big East' name, allowing the current Big East to keep it's name as part of the deal that allowed them to leave. This new conference is named the Metro Conference, after the former conference of the same name (a forerunner of the current Conference USA). It's name is also dervived from the major Metro areas that it's conference members reside in.

Option B: The Group of Seven split up. The five eastern members (Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova) team up with eastern members of the Atlantic 10 (Rhode Island, UMass, St. Bonaventure, Fordham, Duquesne and La Salle) to form the East Coast Conference. They later add the lone independent NJIT to form a 12 team league. Meanwhile, DePaul and Marquette team with Butler, St. Louis and Xavier to form a new league. They add Creighton, IUPUI and Chicago State to form the Great Midwest Conference.

Option A looks like the most likely and I like them taking the Metro name, but I think Option B could be interesting. Here's how I would change it.

ECC: Georgetown, Villanova, St. Joes, La Salle, Seton Hall, St. John's, Fordham, Providence, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure

GMC: Marquette, DePaul, Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, Butler, Loyola-Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland State, Chicago State

The Big East 7 are not separating. By staying together, they maintain an automatic bid. Plus you're putting Marquette and Creighton in a conference with some lower division I teams. Not likely to happen.

Basketball conference:

Georgetown

Providence

St. John's

Villanova

DePaul

Marquette

Seton Hall

To get to 10:

Saint Louis

Xavier

Creighton

To get to 12:

St. Joseph's

Dayton

Butler, not being a Catholic school, may be a wild card choice if they want a better basketball program.

In B the GMC would take Bradley and St. Louis which actually have aspirations (delusions?) towards being good at basketball and have fans rather than tripling down on Chicago with 2 schools that even fewer people care about than DePaul.

My stupid daydream...

The New Big East: buys the name off of the Old Big East

West: Creighton, SLU, Marquette, DePaul, Butler, Xavier

East: St. John's, Seton Hall, Providence, Georgetown, Richmond, Boston U.

Richmond and Boston U. are private and expand the footprint.

Dayton and St. Joe's are left out due to market duplication.

Then Boise/SDSU go back to the MW.

Murray St. moves to Missouri Valley to replace Creighton.

Metro Conference

UConn and Cincy tell ACC to take them or they will have to stay in the "new' Metro Conference and sign away TV rights fees like the Big 12 did. ACC foolishly says no.

North: UMass, UConn, Temple, Cincinnati, Memphis, Navy (FB only), Dayton (non-FB)

South: ECU, USF, UCF, Tulane, SMU, Houston

With Navy staying for just football, the new Metro needed a non-FB member to keep the teams even. They invite Dayton to fill in the spot since Dayton plays football in the FCS Pioneer League.

Atlantic 10 adds Siena and George Mason to actually have ten teams for once.

Of course, when the next move is made, my mind will think of some new scenario.

Whoops...well then adios Richmond or BU.

Boston has no business in a league with aspirations towards basketball greatness.

ECC: Georgetown, Villanova, St. Joes, La Salle, Seton Hall, St. John's, Fordham, Providence, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure

GMC: Marquette, DePaul, Xavier, Dayton, Creighton, Butler, Loyola-Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland State, Chicago State

In B the GMC would take Bradley and St. Louis which actually have aspirations (delusions?) towards being good at basketball and have fans rather than tripling down on Chicago with 2 schools that even fewer people care about than DePaul.

I know a few Loyola fans, which is to say I know a few people who go/went to Loyola.

Chicago State, though? Aren't they always on the verge of losing their accreditation? If you want another school of dubious relevance in the Chicago area, go with Valparaiso. Catholic, too!

Here is a revised version. Chicago State was a stupid addition.

2015 FBS Realignment

It is 2015, and there are 127 teams in the FBS. There will now be 8 conferences of 16 teams(except the ACC with 15) and 2 divisions.

Conference Play-

There will be 8 conference games. You can play whoever you want in your conference, this is because there may be rivalries that couldn't occur anymore if there was division play only. You are then allowed to play 4 out of conference games. You aren't allowed to play an FCS team, unless you are in one of your first five seasons as an FBS school.

Playoffs-

The division winners will play in the conference championship, which will serve as the first round of the playoffs. Conference championships will be played at the current sites, and new ones for conferences that formerly didn’t have a championship game. The conference champions will then be seeded 1-8. Seeding will be determined by strength of schedule, margin of victory/loss, etc. The 1 seed plays the 8 seed, 2 seed plays 7, 3 seed plays 6, and 4 seed plays 5. The quarter finals will be held at the BCS Bowl sites. Winners advance to the semifinals, and those games are played at the second and third highest bidding cities. The winners advance to the championship, which is played at the highest bidding city.

Bowls-

There will be 24 bowl games. The second, third, and fourth place teams from the conference champion’s division, the conference championship loser, and the second and third place teams from that division make a bowl game. That makes a total of 6 teams from each conference making a bowl game, and a total of 48 bowl teams.
