The Pointless Realignment Outpost

Here is my latest Super-Conference realignment.

1. Big Ten grabs UNC and UVA. Duke goes Independent to avoid the ensuing chaos in the ACC and remind themselves that they are a basketball schools.

2. Larry Scott, seeing the Big Ten at 16, asks for the Red River gang again. Texas says no again, but this time Scott convinces Kansas, an AAU research school to take Texas' place. It's not perfect, but Scott is desperate not to be left out of super conference realignment and be stuck at 12. Texas goes Independent.

3. SEC adds NC State and Virginia Tech to expand into more markets and get to 16.

4. The Metro Conference forms between all of the schools left out of realignment. Remaining ACC, Big East and Big Twelve Schools join.

Florida State

Clemson

Georgia Tech

Wake Forest

Louisville

Cincinnati

Miami

West Virginia

Iowa State

Texas Christian

Baylor

Kansas State

Boston College

Syracuse

Connecticut

Pittsburgh

Old Conference USA schools reform minus Lousville and Cincy and the Mountain West stays the same as it is now +SDSU. Also remaining Independent are Notre Dame, Army, Navy and BYU. Lastly, in a desperate move to stay nationally relevant Boise State becomes a football Independent.

Notre Dame

Army

Navy

BYU

Texas

Duke

Boise State

Idaho

New Mexico State

Here's my idea for realignment. This takes place in 2015. Every conference will have 12+ teams, so theirs a championship game for every conference. I decided to send Idaho back down to FCS, because they are just terrible in FBS. The ACC blew up, but the Big East holds on by a thread, and lives. The big conferences are mainly the same, and the WAC and Mountain West combined.

Very reasonable! The only thing I can think of is moving Florida State to the West and West Virginia to the East to 1) create an opportunity for an FSU Miami championship game 2) reunite WV with Pitt and Syracuse.

The Big East becomes a basketball only conference again after all the football playing members disperse to different conferences. The Big East expands from 7 to 10 schools with the additions of Dayton, St. Louis and Xavier from the Atlantic-10.

Perfect (Catholic) symmetry

5 Eastern schools: Georgetown, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova

5 Midwest schools: Dayton, DePaul, Marquette, St. Louis, Xavier

YES!

Here's what happens once the ACC falls apart. (In a dream world!)

Big East adds Syracuse, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Duke, Wake Forest and Notre Dame for a mega-basketball-conference that is just as good as the other super-conferences in basketball. The New York City Tournament is even cooler now!

Big East schools sign an agreement that football will not be as important as basketball and forms a small football league.

Syracuse

BC

Pittsburgh

Connecticut

Duke

Wake Forest

Notre Dame (plays a majority of these teams anyway and it only occupies 6 spots on the schedule for ND so they can still play Navy, Stanford, USC, Etc.)

This, I have to admit that I like, as it would allow for the upcoming 4-team playoff to actually give a (theoretical) chance for any team that wins its conference to have a shot at a true national title.

Butler and St. Joes should be in any basketball only conference.

If the Triple-A Baseball did a realingment just like the MLB, by putting 15 teams in each league, this is how it would look like:

International League

Northeast

Buffalo Bisons

Pawtucket Red Sox

Rochester Red Wings

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

Syracuse Chiefs

Atlantic

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

Charlotte Knights

Durham Bulls

Gwinnett Braves

Norfolk Tides

Midwest

Columbus Clippers

Indianapolis Indians

Louisville Bats

Toledo Mud Hens

Nashville Sounds

Pacific Coast League

Central

Iowa Cubs

Memphis Redbirds

Omaha Storm Chasers

New Orleans Zephyrs

Oklahoma City RedHawks

Southwest

Albuquerque Isotopes

Round Rock Express

Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Tucson Padres

Salt Lake Bees

Pacific

Tacoma Rainers

Fresno Grizzlies

Las Vegas 51s

Reno Aces

Sacramento River Cats

I have two possible schedule options:

4 games vs one outer-league division [5 teams], division rotates on six-year basis (20 games)

4 games vs outer-divisions [10 teams], home/away alts yearly (40 games)

28 games vs division members [3 teams], 14 home, 14 away (84 games)

4 games vs one outer-league division [5 teams], division rotates on six-year basis (20 games)

8 games vs outer-divisions [10 teams], home-home series (80 games)

14 or 15 games vs division members [3 teams], 7/8 games home, 7/8 games away (44 games)

The basic rules would reamin the same. Using DH if an AL-affiliated team is in the game. If both teams are NL, then no DH. All-Star game will still be PCL vs IL. Playoffs would have 3 division winners and 1 wild-card team. "Champions" of each league play against each other for the AAA Championship (Perhaps best-of-five instead of single game like before?)

This whole idea is just simple. It would have "inter-league" for the first time in AAA baseball. I think it would be great for fans as they can see "unusual" teams coming into their stadium to play their favorite teams while they would see their favorite team go on the road to new cities. I guess it's the same idea that MLB originally had when they first added inter-league.

Now, personally, I'm not a fan of interleague because it makes the schedule unbalanced. But I guess it could work for AAA baseball since the minor leagues aren't usually too big on the playoffs.

I was just wondering if anybody have any opinion on this post I made a while back....

Thanks

Not sure AAA baseball is really all that riveting, but that's as good a realignment as any I figure.

I suppose what I can say is that it'd be interesting to see some carryover into the Texas League or why Texas is such a bare-spot for Triple-A.

I imagine it has a lot to do with two MLB teams and four double-A teams. So it's still got 7 of the top 90 baseball clubs in Canada and the US.

Soon to be 8 with the Tucson Padres moving to El Paso.
