B-Rich
Total brain fart earlier on one of my favorite threads (Rare NBA Getty Images, Google & Internet Finds);completely forgot it was NBA-centric and posted some NFL (Saints) photos from 1967. So, moving my posts and starting an NFL equivalent: ================================================================================ The MMQB page on SI.com had a great feature last week on the New Orleans Saints' 1st season: Brawls, Booze and True Believers: The Saints’ Wild First Season (a fun and interesting read, too, by the way) which had some great old shots from Getty and SI. Here are the color ones: Photo of Gary Cuozzo, Jim Taylor and coach Tom Fears taken in training camp (note that's why there are no parallel black stripes on helmet). Still think that look is the BEST look for the Saints, ever. That deep, rich gold-- so much better than the Vegas gold and semi-khaki crap out there today... 1967 game against NY Giants in Yankee Stadium. So much to love about this shot. Saints starting quarterback in their first few years, Billy Kilmer. Love that huge fleur-de-lis logo.... It is what it is.
B-Rich
Some black and white ones from the same article: First ever regular home-season game, against the Rams. John Gilliam returns the first-ever regular season kickoff for a Saints touchdown, 1967. It was all downhill from there for years to come. 1967 home game against the Browns. It is what it is. This photo just makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Such a cool shot for so many reasons: - Both teams are wearing perfect uniforms and there's splendid contrast. - Seeing the Saints in old Yankee Stadium is so cool. Seeing old Yankee Stadium, in color, hosting football is always neat. - I don't know what the news value of the photo would have been, but it's a great shot. - So many cool little details around the stadium that would take hours to find. - Again, the uniforms. I prefer the addition of black stripes to the helmets so they match the pants, but other than that it's the perfect Saints uniform. They got it right at the start, and began chipping away at their success until we have the very flawed uniforms they wear today. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. Is it weird that one of the things that fascinates me about this photo is that Toyota still uses the same wordmark font today . . . 50 years later? This is indeed a great shot for so many reasons, especially the uniforms. But what is weird is that the gold in the Saints' numbers seems to disappear at a distance. The players on the sidelines all appear to have solid white numbers.

Hidden behind the line of scrimmage, just to the left of Giants No. 23, is Pete Gogolak kicking the ball. He was the first soccer style kicker in pro football. Jan Stenerud would have joined him in the pro ranks by this point, as he was a rookie with the Chiefs in 1967. oldschoolvikings
Thank you for the opportunity to drag out the gorgeous 1960's Vikings photos; http://dstewartpaint.blogspot.com/
OnWis97
I am noticing, on those 1960 Vikes uniforms, how much more pronounced the yellow is around the numbers vs. the sleeves. The Northwestern stripes almost look just plain white...And I've always been for yellow-outlined numbers for the Vikings, but this is a bit too thick, as you can't see any purple inside of the 8 and 9. Also of note is the Lions logo sans white. I like the white, but I think this photo shows that it works without it. Similar to the Vikings, they have some really thick outlines. In fact their outline-to-number ratio looks a bit bigger. But it made me wonder whether a Viking in the background would appear to be wearing solid yellow numbers, but on OSV's second photo, #71's number appears pretty much white. Agree with all praise for the Giants-Saints pic & NO's unis, especially re the Saints' gold. I am wondering though why two Saints linemen appear to be hugging in the middle of the play. :-0 About the Cuozzo/Taylor helmets with the single white stripe, that's also what's on the original bobbleheads. Interestingly, the concept helmet on Dave Boss' 1966 poster has a single black stripe (and a much different fdl).
RichO
If the NBA thread taught me that the 70s were the golden age of basketball photography, this thread may be teaching me that the 60s were where it's at for football.

B-Rich
A few from the Detroit Lions before they became a "dome team", showing some of their uni differences back in the day: Lions-Bears in Tiger Stadium,1967. Lions- Bengals, 1970, Tiger Stadium. #14 is later Bengals coach Sam Wyche, #71 is the late Alex Karras. Karras was a warrior (1967)... 1974 night game at Tiger Stadium. This look (to me) is closest to how they are best known and remembered... It is what it is.
BrianLion
A personal favorite of mine. From the 1970 Divisional Playoff. Being it's the Lions, I don't need to tell you the outcome... However the final score of 5-0 is probably one of the weirdest of all time.
