Fitzy0220 Posted July 12, 2019 Share Posted July 12, 2019 Since I’m New to these Forums, I thought this would be a Great Conversation Piece! 2 years ago the one local Sports Radio Talk Show here in Pittsburgh threw out the Question to its Listeners!! Would you attend a Silent Sporting Event? Silent as in No Fluff (NO: Fan Cam, Kiss Cam, Human Bowling, T-Shirt Toss, Dance for Free Food, Etc)! JUST You, The ambient sound of the Crowd / Vendors, The sounds from the Ice / Field / Court (Player chatter, Skates on the ice, Ball off the Bat, Etc) and just a Organ for Music! So I ask you, Would You attend a Silent Sporting Event? Why or Why not? YES, I would! My first Pens game was 3/2/80 (I was 6) and that’s how it was back then! My Pappy taught me about the beautiful game of Hockey and because there was NO FLUFF, I wasn’t Distracted from the Actual Game As a Pens fan (part of a group that gets Season Tickets) and as a former Usher at CONSOL Energy Center (5/2011 - 2/2015), I often wonder why Certain People bother to go to the Games! Maroon Posted July 12, 2019 Share Posted July 12, 2019 I would have zero problem with a sporting event without the promotional aspects in between. To me, they're just noise and space filler. I don't mind them as much as just ignore them. But don't get rid of the organ and announcer, which is what I thought you were going to say when you said "silent." I attended my first MLS match out of curiosity for the shiny new thing in town and fell in love with it immediately largely for the game day experience. No TV timeouts, no stoppage in play, no dance/kiss/karaoke cam, no mascot race/skit, no Chick-Fil-A cow drops, GEICO t-shirt canons, Dr Pepper football toss ... none of that :censored:. Honestly, who is entertained by any of that? Basketball is utterly bizarre since there are only about 1-2 minute breaks and they feel the need to fill every second of them with noise. I'd go for a silent broadcast of most sports as well. The commentary does nothing for me, and I'd rather ride the excitement of the crowd and the game than listen to Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson complain about refs and kids these days. I agree with all of this except that when I'm watching broadcasts there are some really good commentators. The problem is that there are many more that are downright atrocious than there are good ones. But when you have a good commentator who can actually break down what's happening on the field/court/ice without just regurgitating predetermined narratives, that's something that's really enjoyable for me as a fan. I think part of that perspective is that I really like baseball on the radio (even though, heh, the Cardinals don't have that great of a radio team anyhow), and the play-by-play and excitement in big moments can really enhance the moment. FiddySicks Posted July 12, 2019 Share Posted July 12, 2019 I used to go to Arizona Fall League games when I lived in the Phoenix area and those are about as "No fluff" as it gets. There usually isn't even a crowd loud enough to drown out the noise from the field. It was pretty cool. Nothing like seeing a pitcher give up a home run and hearing loud and clear every single expletive the pitcher spits out from the back row. But if I was going to a St. Paul Saints game, then no. The baseball isn’t that great, and the atmosphere is kinda what I’m there for. I mean don’t get me wrong, I really like baseball, and enjoy watching it for the actual game, but minor league games need that extra stuff and it’s kinda fun anyways. Wheeling Nailers are only like an hour drive from Pittsburgh and I agree the Minor League (especially the ECHL type Minor Leagues) games need that extra Fluff. Being a former Usher, it just baffled me as to Why Certain people even bothered to go to the games. Weather it's having their Heads / Eyes buried in their Phones / Tablets or Moms / Dads (kids in tow) running up the stairs to catch the Mascot or Socializing at the Bar the whole game....WTF!! Pens vs Sabres wanna say 2013ish (Steelers happened to have an away game at the same time), had a Father / Son (maybe 8 or 9) at the top of my section seats 1 and 2, Pens forward Dustin Jeffrey took a Tripping Penalty Kid: Hey Dad Kid: Hey Dad Kid: Heeeeeeey Dad Dad: FINALLY looks up from his Tablet (watching the Steelers game on his Tablet), What?? Kid: What did the Pens Player do? BBTV Posted July 14, 2019 Share Posted July 14, 2019 Seasons are way too long, and so many games don't really matter or are between teams that have nobody worth watching, and cost too much to go to just because you "love the sport". If you "love the sport" go watch a high school game. If you take all that other stuff away (maybe not kiss cam... that's dumb af) then attendance would plummet, because kids love some of it, casual fans get into it , and honestly.... at least with baseball... you need distractions because it's a dinosaur of a game that moves... so.... slow. You get to a playoff game or a late-season game in a tight pennant race and people are glued to their phones and distracted by everything else, then yeah - that sucks because there's plenty of people that would probably have appreciated the experience more since those tickets (in some places) are really difficult to get. Other than that? Screw you if you think I should be sitting there keeping score or doing nothing but commenting to someone "well, Joe West is sure giving him that outside corner today". My iPhone gets put into DO NOT DISTURB MODE until my ass rolls into the Parking lot / spot of where I am goin or parked in my Driveway. I was rear ended twice in 2018 because of Distracted Drivers (in Feb while on my way home from work and in July in a RENTAL CAR that I had just picked up from the lot (had to travel to our Columbus Office for couple days and the Company rented me a car) you NEED those Distractions yet how did people Survive going to Events back in the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s etc without said Distractions? There’s rarely any sort of screen for replays let alone wacky promotions and the music is usually handled by the band. i would disagree with the idea that these distractions are needed for casuals to enjoy sporting events. I don’t think the lack of a kiss-cam would prevent anybody from attending a game. I would also argue that everybody has their phone now, which acts as the preferred time waster during halftime or mound visits for most people. I could see it being a bit unsettling for there to not be a constant barrage of noise of some form though, since that’s what we’ve become accustomed to. Well Played LOL! The Radio Sports Talk show put forth this Question because the one host observed more people on their devices than watching the game itself. IS the Game NO LONGER the Main Attraction here (he thought to himself) ME as a Former usher at CONSOL Energy Center, I saw this all the Time (the Example I cited when I posted above). Here give you another Example Jan 2015 vs Black Hawks 4 Guys in my Section (Row A), Took their seats for Warm ups BUT spent the Entire Game at the Brew House Bar (up on the concourse). Here's the kicker. ANYTIME the Crowd went Oh or Ah or Cheered for a Goal, these guys would Run (yes RUN) with beers in hand over to the edge of the Concourse to see What Happened. Split Beer on Concourse meant Calling for Clean Up, the people in Row N (last Row atop of Concourse) started to Complain that these guys had either Spilt beer on them or Bumped into them from behind, meant I had to warn them then my Supervisor had to warn them before Security and Pittsburgh Police told these guys to settle down or they are Out of the Bldg. Pens lost in a Shoot Out (hate the F'n shoot out but that's a comment for another Thread LOL). Hey the guys either bought their Tickets or the Tickets were given to them (if that's what they want to do fine) but IF all you're gonna do is watch the TV at the Bar inside the Arena, why bother to Attend the Game in the First Place, why not give those Tickets to someone who'd Actually Appreciate them instead of treat them like Socializing at the Bar is MORE Important than the Game itself That scenario reminded me of what it was like at Pens games (my Pappy was an Original season ticket holder) after they had won the '91 and '92 Cups! Pens games became the Place TO BE and BE SEEN, to me it was at that point where the jokes started about Pens Fans being BAND WAGON FANS because if the Pens weren't winning, those NON Hockey Fans (that ONLY WENT to BE SEEN) would leave the Arena maybe at 46, I've reached that stage in my Life where I am Officially old LOL!
