No added noise. The fans were vocal but they were individually noticeable.  Like you could see individual shouts. A lot of player families were there.

The crowd that was there was into it. But the game was so so bad.

No argument here, doesn't help the lack of a truly "local" team and cold/windy bad weather today either.  Just gritting my teeth for them to make it to year 3 and then actually put PITT, PHI, NJ, NOLA,and HOU in their true home markets.

Doubt most of those are actually still in the league. Where are they gonna play? Are they gonna be able to put the Gamblers in Houston with the Roughnecks already there?

Realistically the Roughnecks and Gamblers should be able to co-exist in Houston since the two leagues have little overlap. I'm sure the University of Houston would accept rent from both leagues to use their stadium.

I personally think the Gamblers will be rebranded and moved to a different market ahead of season 3 for that reason. (My money is on either Tulsa as a revived "Oklahoma Outlaws", or a revival of the Tampa Bay Bandits if they can get a deal to play at Raymond James field), but I listed them here to illustrate the point. But the others do have realistic venue options:

  • NOLA can play at either Yulman Stadium (Tulane), or just the lower bowl at the Superdome with dimmed lighting/tarps on the upper levels.
  • Philly could go to either Franklin Field or Subaru park (assuming the Union are open to it)
  • NJ can go to SHI Stadium (Rutgers) or Red Bull Arena (again assuming RBNY would be open to it).
  • PITT can do either lower bowl only at Heinz field, or rebrand/relocate to another market (think Columbus could be one to keep an eye on at (fka) Mapfre, or potentially Chicago at Seakgeek Stadium)

The Spring League (essentially the semi-official predecessor to USFL 2.0) used Rice Stadium in Houston as a hub in 2021. Think that might be eyed here as well should the league want to stay in Houston.

I’m not so sure I yet buy the long term feasibility of “spring” football. That being said, NGL, it has been pretty nice having this much off season football to watch. Very nice change of pace from the typical pre NFL draft slog that’s just the same talking points ran completely into the ground. The more they do this, the more I hope one of these leagues sticks around.

What would be really wild is if we ultimately got a NFL/AFL style merger from the XFL and the USFL. The UXFL, if you will.

Are they dead set on having legacy clubs? Why not come up with new names?

Because as soon as they do that they lose the USFL aesthetic. That's what they're leaning on now to keep them in front of the XFL. For as many people showed up in Canton for the playoffs, they didn't show up today. Maybe better weather helps, but I don't think it would help significantly. People know those two are just temporary visitors, so why get worked up for it?

Philadelphia and Michigan are both supposed to be playing out of Detroit, but played in Canton tonight. What's the point of "home sites"? And next week they'll be the away teams at Ford Field, vs the the two Canton teams. No wonder no one shows up, are they tracking there was even a game today?

Red Bull Arena has two full-time soccer teams - RBNY and Gotham FC - so I can't see them interested in squeezing in five more games of something guaranteed to tear up their pitch.

If Pittsburgh moves to Columbus, are they still the Pittsburgh Maulers? Because as others have pointed out, this is the corner the league has backed itself into with legacy identities, and they can't reverse course on it when more than half the league's teams still aren't even playing in their home markets.

SeatGeek in Bridgeview has the availability and a team name at the ready, but I highly doubt the interest is there. It's in a thoroughly odd spot that's inconvenient for a lot of people, even more so since the connector buses between the stadium and the Orange Line got discontinued. And historically, the only alt-football that has done well here has been of the arena variety.

It's already been mentioned that tonight's game was displaced from Detroit by a concert.

And Michigan is the home team next Sunday in Detroit.  WJR has been touting the week 3 home opener since last week.

Also, Philadelphia is the home team in its game in Detroit earlier that day.

There was a Luke Combs concert at Ford Field.

As far in advance as that was known, they could have swapped opponents between this and next week. But since we're not dealing with true home and away matchups I guess it makes sense to play their home game outside the original home venue.

The one thing I haven't investigated is the season ticket prices.

The Maulers are advertising $30 season tickets. Their normal price is $10 per game. $8 for group sales. However, is that $30 for just the Mauler games or for all Canton games? On 5/7, it's a true doubleheader on one ticket. But the rest of the year they're different tickets.

I would call but don't want to get roped into an overzealous sales rep contacting me. Either way $30 is a great deal but they've just missed the proper market. Canton could host a Cleveland named team probably. But not Pittsburgh. Because as many Steelers fan this part of the state has.... they're Steelers fans. Not Pittsburgh fans.

Funny the only Browns jacket I saw was at the night game between Michigan and Philadelphia. You're not going to get many Browns fans to cheer for a Pittsburgh named team wearing black and yellow.

I think if the USFL slides back two weeks and keep the Gamblers on the road the first week, in case of playoffs at home, they can both work at TDECU.

$30 for probably three games since they'll be at Detroit as a home team next week I believe. That's not bad. And that's why I don't know why they can't get bigger crowds. Saturday was the first time I saw the Brahmas give tickets away to one of the high school teams, who also happen to be named the Brahmas. The AAF advertised to some of the school districts to buy tickets and then let the elementary students march around the field prior to a game. That didn't happen this year, but most of the Brahmas tickets were bought, not handed out like the AAF tickets apparently were. The USFL could probably fill a few seats by advertising free tickets to kids in stark, Tuscarawas, and Summit counties with an adult purchase to help bump up those numbers.

As far as renaming the Maulers if they stayed in Canton, do you go with the Blitz, in a new color scheme that isn't black and gold, or do they have to create a new identity? The only team with colors close to the Browns were the Jacksonville Bulls, and though it would fit closer to the Canton Bulldogs colors they might want to save that for the future in a different city. It's also possible the league just moves the Maulers to Commerce City and renames them the Denver Gold.

OK, I think the Generals game is the home game for New Jersey, right?

No, the Generals will be playing the Panthers, which will of course be the home team in Detroit.  All the Generals' home games are in Canton.

By the way, the idea of using the name Canton Bulldogs is good.  But, unfortunately, that name is owned by the NFL.
