MLS Kits 2021

If they already submitted the paperwork to change the name officially, the damage is probably done. There's a good chance they're going to walk it back as much as possible by continuing to use Crew as the unofficial nickname. It's really a shame, because it was easily the best name out of the founding franchises.

Even if they were keeping the name, the crest change is terrible. The last update was great, and made them look much more like an actual professional team. Now they're going with a create-a-team caliber logo that does a mediocre job incorporating the state flag compared to their neighbours at Nationwide Arena.

If you're rebranding to be more Euro (which you shouldn't), why would you keep SC and not change to FC like most of the other MLS clubs with that type of branding.

This is a tremendously stupid move by Crew ownership.

This is total nonsense. We are the Crew, they cry, while making the team name no longer the Crew. This is worse than 15 years ago when nobody could explain coherently whether it was Red Bull New York or the New York Red Bulls.

The Crew’s new marks set to elevate the city of Columbus, recognizing the global stage of soccer and the opportunity to represent the city for which they play, the club said in a release. The new crest will be used interchangeably with Columbus SC.

Oh go :censored: yourselves.

now it just looks like someone who forgets the capital of South Carolina.

Is it Columbia, SC or Columbus, SC?

awful awful choice by the new ownership. looks like #SavetheCrew will be trending once again to get the name back

It seems clear from looking at this collection of marks that the suggestion that "Crew" remain the team's nickname was part of the plan all along and not a reaction to the social media backlash.

You can't force a nickname - either remain the Columbus Crew or drop Crew - you can't do both. As others have mentioned, Columbus SC now just sounds like someone forgot where Columbus was (same reason Charlotte couldn't have gone with SC). The new mark isn't good, the checkers were ruined, and overall the ownership completely mucked up the brand. I bet we see a Fire-type reversal in a year, hopefully just returning to the (now previous) logo that was actually good. Is there anyone who's actually good with this?

Reading more on this, the team is employing the logic that, over the years, its fanbase has simply referred to it as "the Crew" and the Columbus part of it has been lost in the process. So this is all some attempt to remind the world that there's such a place as Columbus. Source: https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2021/05/10/crew-rebrand-elevate-the-city.html

I would buy this if it were an attempt to rebrand a regional economic development agency. But I don't think the world at large was overlooking the fact that the Crew were, in fact, in Columbus.

Boy, if only the previous logo had reminded people that the Crew were. in fact, in Columbus.

Flash forward 18 months from now, “After hearing input from our supporters, the club will be rebranding in time for 2023.”

and you know, this is why every team everywhere needs fan input for potential rebrands. They waste god knows how much money on these projects without even asking the fans, "what would you like to see?" "send ideas" "should we even change". Instead they throw crap, it fails massively and then it's back to the drawing board a few years later when the thing no one asked for could've been avoided.

And the insane thing is that MLS has established, organized, and recognized fan groups.  They don't have to do something stupid like run a Twitter poll to connect with their fanbase, they already have a pipeline to the most dedicated supporters.  The kind of supporters who can make or break a change like this.

"They even met with the Nordecke leadership again this afternoon and asked if they could explain the concept further and get the Nordecke on board. end of the meeting Nordecke said “nope” and the FO said they were still going to move forward with the release today"

Amusingly, if they were English, or perhaps other Euro countries, cities this close do have different accents.
