"What looks dated about them?" he says, before rattling off half the reasons they look dated.

They're not bad jerseys by any means, but I'd much rather see them stick with their Adidas jerseys. About a third of the league has adopted direct thowbacks full time. Slapping an old jersey on a new template is boring, lazy, and uninspired if you ask me. I'd much rather see teams build on their identities while honoring the past like the Sharks, Avs, Bruins, Leafs, and (formerly) Canes have.

The Canes were one of the best-looking teams in the league with their Adidas jerseys, and it sucks to see them throw it away — especially in favor of that ugly-as-sin black jersey.

I don't think that when the jerseys come out has any impact on how good they look. These just happen to be both their oldest design and their best. The two have no correlation, but in this case they overlap. The numbers on the other reds are so much weaker and more generic that they bring down the entire jersey. Add the warning stripe (the most signature element of the jerseys) being smaller and ghosted and it isn't close.  If they changed those two things, I'd take the modern jerseys. As both stand today, I'll take the ones with character and identity over the ones that look "less dated".

Comparing these to other teams who have gone to old jerseys is pointless. The Senators old/new jerseys stink. It's not because they're old. It's just because they're bad. Same with the Coyotes. Some teams pull it off (Buffalo in hockey, Tampa Bay and Cleveland in football) because they never should have switched in the first place. I put the Hurricanes far closer to the latter category than the former.

We are in complete agreement on the black jerseys. I hate them. I'm not a huge fan of either of their last two iterations of the white uniforms either.

The only dated thing about the original Hurricanes uniforms is the NASCAR looking number font, but being in the city they play in the NASCAR number font is appropriate and charming in its own silly way. It made more sense for them than it did for the mid-90's Patriots who weirdly used a similar font.

I seriously think cricket might have a bigger following in the Raleigh area than NASCAR. It's probably the place in NC that follows NASCAR the least. Nevertheless, the numbers are my favorite thing about the jerseys. They're not trying to be Boston, New York, Toronto, or Chicago. Raleigh is a non-traditional market and these numbers reflect that. Plus, they're bold and look great.

Honestly think teal is better now that we’ve seen it.

Yeah, that’s surprisingly where I’m at as well. The black gear just kind of gives them the same problem the Buccaneers have with their current set, in a sense. Trying to imitate the original look, but just missing the mark. Gives it sort of a dime store, discount brand vibe. The all teal was the way to go.

The reds they just got rid of have some elements that are better (replacing a lot of the silver with black) but its flaws (ghosted warning stripe, generic/weak number font) bring it down. Their perfect jersey would be the 2017-2021 reds but with the NOB/numbers of the originals and a non-ghosted warning stripe.

Meh, the last red jerseys just felt like a watered-down version of the inaugural jerseys. The silver & warning flag pattern were the main things that made the Canes distinct from the other red & black teams. The Sharks rebrand looks just as generic, but at least teal is a unique colour.

Sorry, that’s WAY too much teal for my taste.

That's what I was trying to say earlier. With black pants and helmets it's so close to the original look without being exact that it's got "can I copy your homework?" "Yeah, but just change a few things so it's not obvious" vibes. Same reason I think these Kings uniforms are weird.

That's like two changes off of the 93 jerseys. Why not just wear the 93 throwbacks as they were?

With the Sharks I think the teal pants and helmets are different enough from the OG look that it allows the striping on the jerseys, while similar to the OG look, to feel intentional and mark their own uniform statement in team history apart from the 91 unis.

I don’t understand how people are complaining about the Sharks keeping the orange in the logo but are also pining for these jerseys to make a return:

How come one team gets a pass for using a color only in the logo but another team is getting chastised for it?

curious why you dont like the white cuff? don't think it's particularly common or overdone and i think it's needed to break up the color of same colored gloves and jersey, much like the leotard look in the nfl. unless it's a two-color team like detroit

There's just too many teams with either solid coloured gloves or just a contrasting cuff roll. And the contrasting cuff roll (often white) seems to be especially trendy and I think more teams could make an effort to have a unique colour scheme on their gloves like Montreal, New York Rangers, Arizona and Vegas do. I just think the basic Leafs white cuff roll template is kinda boring

Just a small nitpick but I've always been a gear nerd so I care more about this stuff than most people on here who just like the jerseys I guess lol

I'm talking about the cuff roll on the gloves by the way, not the cuffs on the jersey

Plenty of people on here love to whine about the black in that Ducks logo actually lol. We even argued about it a week or two ago ITT

This one is an even better example

Two things:

1). The ducks yellow is IMO a much better color than the sharks “orange”.

2). The ducks never took that yellow and adopted it as an actual team color. It’s adding it to the triangle, and more so, to the stripes on the uniform, that make that color such trash. It gives the stick nearly as much importance as the shark itself.

It's certainly not a BAD look, but IMO the use of grey is superior and sets them apart.  From TV distance the black and teal melt together and they're going to look like Toronto/Tampa with wonky color settings .  IMO the home jersey is better, I think the away is awkward at hem as you lose the appearance of a single white line ....  I guess the way my eyes are seeing it is "teal stripe on teal jersey" and "white stripe on white jersey" which feels strange

left is real, middle adds teal to road hem, right adds teal to road hem and sleeves

They should have dumped the orange on the triangle part of the logo.  It never looked right even with the previous sets.  It's fine on the stick and eye.

And, the thing about the black gear is that we are so use to it.  So, now that the Sharks have all teal gear, it looks weird.  Eventually, everyone will get use to it and it would be, like why didn't they do that in the first place?

It's not like Colorado where the blue gear will always look off to me, at least with the white jerseys.

I like this tweak of the home striping:

Makes both of these more directly linked to the original set and just feels better overall. Keeps the black stripes in the same place on both jerseys and feel more tertiary to teal and white.

the best thing of this is the new fin logo. I really want something with that on it.

This is what the current logo would look like with matching outlines.
