I think we need to know what the line is. BBTV is hyperbolic and has been so for some time. What he did was a joke in bad taste; are we going to suspend people for bad jokes?

How do you regulate that?

Reluctantly.

Kidding aside, we do need to address this. For whatever it's worth, there was considerable debate amongst the mod squad on BBTV. The only mod I can speak for is myself so with that in mind...

Nine times out of ten, the line is pretty clear, but there is always that tenth time when the line is in the eye of the beholder and that's where things get tricky. A joke that you or I may find distasteful, but otherwise harmless, will have others losing their minds over it. I suppose we could say that all jokes are fair game, but the minute we do that, people will post awful stuff and claim "it's just a joke." Frankly, I don't know how we regulate something as subjective as humor, but we need find a better way than this. I'm open to suggestions.

I don’t see an issue.  The end result seems to fit the remark.  The sausage got made.

I think MOD EDIT serves the purpose.

Suspensions make it look like you (however "you" is defined) play favorites with who gets to be off color and who doesn't.

I think every suspension tries to fit the offense with the right length of time, as much as possible.

It was a joke, a bad joke. We all know he’s obviously not serious when he “wishes” death  upon some guy for something inconsequential. The hyperbolic reaction to everything is kinda his schtick, no? I’ve never read one of his comments and thought he’s being anything more than hyperbolic and facetious just for the sake of it.
Moderating bad jokes is a little ridiculous. Like infrared said, defining that line is difficult. He said nothing racial, political, sexist or excessively rude or crude and hasn’t really crossed that line as far as I can remember? More cringey this time than funny, yeah, sure, but we all know it was a bad joke that didn’t land.

I read his stuff, chuckle, or roll my eyes and move one. Maybe he deserved a stern talking to about the right time and place for humor but a two month suspension is harsh. Those are my two cents.

But where is that line? This isn’t his first hurrah when it came to jokes that are out of line or out of hand. When it’s your first time I get it a warning is okay. But when it happens constantly, then a short suspension doesn’t hurt when you do it constantly.

BBTV brings a lot of quality conversations to these boards, but honestly he's made so many comments wishing harm on those that use retired numbers that I don't think he's joking all that much. And when pressured on it in the past has basically doubled down on it and never said anything like "obviously I'm joking, but I just don't like it". But 2 months seems a bit severe IMO.

Just like you said, how do we decide what’s out of line or out of hand? I think it’s like that pornography quote, you know it when you see it right?

I guess I just don’t have a real problem with him because I’ve never interpreted his posts as anything more than a “joke”. They don’t read as threats to me and I just move on past them. He’s playing a character that gets under the skin of some of us around here, and I don’t think the BBTV bit deserves a suspension.

As has been said, this was nowhere near an unanimous decision and we had a LOT of back and forth on it.  In terms of the punishment, the system is based on a 0-10 vote from all 11 moderators that determines the suspension length by point scale.  So, for instance, if one moderator votes 10 (ban) and another votes 0 (no action) it'll average a 5 (two months).  We had some high and some low so this averaged right in the middle.

He posts it so much that it isn't defensible. It reminds me of someone who drops anti-fill-on-the-blank comments, then says he has friends of that sort -- just ask him.

IMO, had he done it once it would have only looked bad. He kept at it, even though he was questioned about it.

Mods have a tough job.  I think they needed to do something and they did.

It's where I sit.

BBTV, as of this post, has the secondmost amount of reactions this week. Second-highest of the month. Highest of the year. Second-highest all time.

I mean, it's not like (most?) people aren't responding to what the guy is offering.
