2022 NBA Offseason

It appears they moved him because he wasn't about to extend his contract this year nor the next, as he would command bigger offers as a free agent. I guess the Spurs got a good return for him in this case, but why wouldn't they pay him the money themselves? Dejounte is exactly the piece they should build around in their situation. Who are they so tied to with their money on their roster?

It's the same issue as Kawai. Without a big like LaMarcus Aldridge to put pressure up top, he'll get his points but the team won't win games. Gallinari might even get waived by the Spurs, since it drops the cap hit by $18 million.

San Antonio's ceiling was/is play-in fodder. It's possible that with the way Murray jumped up this year, they figured it's better to trade him while his stock is high than give him a big contract that they maybe don't feel great about. Murray's a good player but it's not like he's Dwyane Wade or anything.

But the plan should be to acquire such a big through the draft or trades, and build the team by adding those pieces. He might not be D-Wade, but he's just the type of player they needed to build around with who does everything, just like the Cavs do with Garland, and compete from there.  The Cavs were not going to be playing for the title right off the jump. The 6th-8th seed is a logical next step for them. Taking a step back wasn't really what I was expecting of the Spurs at this stage and in Pop's career.

EDIT: That being said, Murray isn't the best of fits in the backcourt for Atlanta alongside Trey at all. We'll see how it works.

The only thing the Spurs could be expected to do last year was get Popovic the wins record. Now, it looks like they're trimming costs because they're having issues getting a big free agent in the door when everyone expects Pop to leave in a year or two. The team is getting younger and a few of the kids brought in last year will get more playing time this year. I wish they'd have kept Derrick White instead of shipping him to Boston if they were going to do this with Murray. Murray took so many of the shots that it will be a pain to see who can replace those points on this team right now. It's the team's 50th year in San Antonio and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to pick any seat I want for almost all of the games this year based on how they're starting free agency this year.

So yeah that big 3 of the Nets lasted what? 20 games? LOL

I always knew KD would regret not signing with Boston when he had the chance. He'd still have at least 2 rings, but people wouldn't hate his guts and there'd be no controversy that he needed a superteam like the Warriors to win a ring.  LOL

But on a more serious note, I am curious where he will end up. Phoenix seems  likely, but that depends how much they are willing to give up.

Honestly I'm not sure what teams could afford him. Especially considering what the Spurs just got for Murray.

Sixers are looking at a full season with Harden, Embiid, PJ Tucker, and whatever else they pick up (maybe KD)? Nice offseason for them.

I think a Russ/Kyrie swap could be on again. Kyrie on an extension is worthless in Brooklyn without KD, and swapping him for an expiring Russ clears their deck for 2023 with cap space and, potentially, picks from a KD trade.

Anyone who thinks that the Lakers are going to land Kyrie AND KD are :censored:ing delusional. Honestly even one of them going to the Lakers sounds pretty stupid all things considered.

Kyrie for Westbrook. Who the :censored: would even make that move? I’d rather have Kyrie not playing at all than move him to LA for Westbrook.

Who said anything about Kyrie and KD? KD better be moved for picks, and a :censored:-ton of them. KD's deal should be better than AD's deal, and LAL definitely can't get anywhere near that unless they trade LeBron, THT, Bronny, and one of Jeannie's Playboy outtakes.

Kyrie for Westbrook gives the Nets an expiring asset. Considering they're looking down the barrel of a rebuild, it makes some basketball sense. Also, Houston owns most of their first-round picks the next several years, so Brooklyn may want to pursue immediately flexibility as soon as the 2023 offseason. Kyrie's now on a 5-year deal that Brooklyn probably doesn't want anymore. Westbrook would be pain and suffering for this season to be able to move on immediately next season.

The farm ought to be on the table, aside from Paul, Booker, and maybe Bridges, and only because letting any of those three go would defeat the purpose of trading for KD and going for it in the short term.

I haven't been a cap nerd since the early 10's, can Phoenix sign and trade Ayton as the financial centerpiece of a trade?

I think so. And I think you can't add players to a sign and trade, so it would be Ayton + picks.

Probably the funniest thing in the world would be to trade them both to Sacramento. I would really like to see a team like Memphis or New Orleans see what they can do with a player like Durant, though. Sort of come full circle for him a bit.

If I'm Memphis, I'd rather have the next 5 years of Ja than the last 3 years of KD.

KD to Philly seems like his best option to win. I like KD to New York too.

Him to the Suns seems like a better idea of paper than in practice, but could also be similar to Kawhi on the Raptors.

While I don't understand the absurdities of the NBA salary cap - a system that makes a contract more valuable than a player - according to local guys, the Sixers could make that deal work with something like Tobias Harris, Tyreese Maxey (who some dummy locals deem untradable for some reason - even for a HOFer!) some other jabroni.

Philly could barely keep their guys together,  You really think KD wants to walk into basically the same situation he just left?

What do you mean "could barely keep their guys together"?

I would say Ayton, Bridges, Cam Johnson and 2 first round picks for KD.

Brooklyn needs to recoup some picks that they traded away to Houston.

Brooklyn already said they have no interest in Ayton
