NFL 2023 Changes

If/when Nike can figure out a way to make shiny fabric that is as light and wicking as the flat version, the Bucs would look perfect again.  I have no idea what the true performance benefits of the flat fabric are, but I guess it'd contradict their own marketing if they started making shiny again.

Hell - maybe the shiny is why the Cowboys continuously give us LOL moments in the playoffs.

Regarding the Bucs’ shades or Red and Orange—how would the darker red and the creamsicle orange look together?

Similarly, how would the current darker orange look with pewter as the base for an alternate jersey?

Shocked, SHOCKED I say that there has been no mention of the Bills in a "worst NFL uniforms of all time" discussion. Maybe so much time has passed with their current proper look that we've washed it from our collective memories.

Bucs don't even sniff these sets IMO.

By 2023 standards, that's a classic look!

It was definitely the worst in its time, but it's been surpassed a dozen time since.

I dunno. I think the navy blue one is still a contender for worst ever. The white was always the lesser of two evils for me.

I think adidas' primeknit fabrics may hold a key to that. Thanks primarily—I think—to VGK, adidas has engineered a shimmery fabric that's every bit as light as their now-normal flat fabric. The only issue I can glean from it now is that the material can feel abrasive to the skin without some kind of backing. (Then again, hockey sweaters ain't directly touching skin, so that may not have been their primary consideration.) The point is that dazzle-ish fabric is possible because it exists right now albeit in another sport. I'm sure if Nike et. al committed the necessary time and resources to development, they could engineer a new kind of shimmer fabric for football uniforms, as well.

I ain't gonna front: when those first came out, I actually thought they were fire. Of course that feeling fizzled out about as fast as it was lit up, but even with the piping side panels, and yoked away jerseys, it was still fairly traditional design...with actual legible numbers.

Their current ones are far better (though the OJ/Kemp-era sets might be the best they've ever looked). But the Alarm Clocks set an all-time bar for awnawhellnaw  in footba—shoot, sports design period.

Since proclaiming the Bucs as my #1 a few pages back I thought about my most hated NFL uniforms and only one is from before 2000. My 10 Most Hated Full Time Uniforms In the Super Bowl Era. (Confining this to the super bowl era because I'm not going back to when the Eagles wore yellow in 19 dicketty when we were still developing a shared football aesthetic. And I'm not including alternates like the Steelers bumblebees where ugliness in one-offs is purposeful and half of the novelty. It has to have been used in the modern era where the team had to commit to it in both home and road. Looks where the team was trying to look cool and ended up looking like bozos.)

1. 2014-2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2. 2015-2019 Cleveland Browns

3. 2013-2017 Jacksonville Jaguars

These three are Nike's masterpiece titled "Painting with S***, Oops All Bad Decisions"

4. 2002-2010 Buffalo Bills

5. 2004-2020 Cincinnati Bengals

6. 2005-2022 Arizona Cardinals

7. 2006-2012 Minnesota Vikings

These four are Reebok's masterpiece. Daring at the time in the field of Looking Like Ass, they laid the ground work for the Nike atrocities that would come later, but are quaint in their badness in retrospect. We had it so good before these and had no idea what hell these would inspire later.

8. 2018-2023 Tennessee Titans

That number font should be an actual crime. Could we add a 9th outline to the helmet logo? As if the shoulders aren't busy enough, how about a random square of columbia blue under the armpits? Year 6 and they haven't improved. Hoping the Oilers throwbacks convince the team to readopt the Oilers color scheme moving forward.

9. 1996 Baltimore Ravens

Later iterations have come to be some of my favorite uniforms in the NFL, but the first attempt was just a gross usage of their colors. And the logo, the one guy sued them over - DOGS***. Like the Jags and Jaguar automobiles, they came out the other side of the lawsuit with a much better mark.

10. 2009-2012 Jacksonville Jaguars

Reebok's last gasp. It's like they said "Can we be boring and pointlessly modern?"  Teal flake helmets walked so the Jags two-color helmet could poop.

That last sentence has me in stitches.

I think the weirdest thing about those Reebok unis is the only one that I think could’ve stood to stick around was the Falcons, which I also think were the first team to get the Reebok treatment. Everything after SUCKED. All misses.

The Bills were the first in 2002. Falcons were the next year in 2003. And just for completionists  sake, Bengals were 2004, Cardinals 2005, Vikings 2006, Chargers 2007, (nothing in 2008,) Jags 2009, (nothing in 2010,) and Bills again in 2011. I didn't count the Texans, since that seems to not have been a Reebok design, and the 2009 49ers, as that was just going back to an old look. The 2011 Bills was stated to be a Reebok creation, so that counts.

If you think about it, the Patriots were the first team to get the "Reebok treatment" even though Adidas was their supplier back then. That set had all the same design elements that Reebok took and ran with for the next decade. The only difference between those uniforms and the Bills or Cardinals is that they won more.

The only problem with the dynasty Pats uniform was the side panels. Don't get why people act like it was a Cardinals-tier fiasco

Bad logo, but that had been a problem for years. The Techno Team 2000 nameplates were a problem that the new set fixed.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I on the other hand feel/believe they should have kept the Brady Block* number/NOB font and just transported them over to this set. The current number/NOB set looks like Walmart knock-off versions of the former set in comparison...IMO, of course.
