Worst. Sport. Ever.

This "sport", owned by scumbag extraordinaire Dana White, is what they call Power Slap. If you haven't seen it yet, I guess competitors trade open-handed, defenseless, blows to the head and have 30 seconds to get to their feet or they lose -- the video below speaks for itself. The stunning part of all this (aside from people actually partaking in it) is that was picked up by a major cable network. Sickening.

Football and wrestling don't require players to just stand there defenseless and take blows to the head.

The goal of football is to move a ball down a field and score points while trying to stop your opponent from doing the same.

The goal of wrestling is to score points or win via pin, but subduing your opponent by holding them down.

The goal of this is to severely injure your opponent until they are unable to stand.

One of these is not like the other.

Boy, Dana White really got off easy after slapping his wife.

The Dana White thing makes me feel a little weird. It’s NEVER ok to smack a woman, but I find that being preceded by the feeling that it’s never ok to smack anyone like that. Real :censored: move on his part, but I don’t exactly have a ton of sympathy for her, either.

This might be getting a little personal, but I had an ex who got pretty abusive like that toward the end, and she felt kind of emboldened knowing that I wasn’t going to do anything about it for a multitude of different reasons. Pretty quickly I realized that the only thing I could do was to leave. I’m a lot better off for it and am with someone now who’s the polar opposite of her, but I’m not going to lie and say there wasn’t some trauma I’ve dealt with because of it.

Hitting women is just about the most vile answer you can come up with, but I really do wish we had a better way of confronting abuse from all ends.

This might be going off the rails a bit, but our culture doesn't have a lot of protections for abused men, whether that's physical or verbal abuse. Don't know what to do about that.

I guess what we shouldn't do about that, however, is slap each other. That's not helping anyone.

What's the point of medical staff there? It's one thing for people to get hurt in pursuit of sport. It's another when the sport is pursuit of hurt.

So gross. And luckily, America agrees. Ratings were in the toilet.

I remember this being a niche online thing in Russia that would go viral every now and then, and the reception was positive.

Of course, it was big in Russia. It's Russia. At any given time, at least 1/4th of the country is drunk.

What this sport needs to succeed here is for celebrities to get involved. Nobody here wants to watch two jacked-up guys give each other brain damage. But if it's Chaz Bono and Ted Nugent slapping the taste out of each other's mouth, people will tune in.
