RyanB06 79 Posted February 2, 2005 You're not nutty. That name is a disgrace. This is not a hockey arena, or a basketball gymnasium. This is a BASEBALL PARK. Name it as such.Is anyone else sick and tired of all these corporately-named sporting arenas being called "XYZ Center/re"? Come up with something original!
OMMF 120 Posted February 3, 2005 At least you can play MVP Baseball 2005 at the old SkyDome

Stampman 104 Posted February 3, 2005 For those who have missed it before--"Centre" is a building, a structure..."center" is a the middle of something...So Centre is indeed correct...(and you could be in the center of the centre...)
officeglenn 2,548 Posted February 3, 2005 Was watching PTI this afternoon, and Kornheiser and Wilbon were ripping on the name too. Not on the "centre" part, mind you; they were wondering who "Rogers" was. One of their hypotheses was that the stadium was named after Mr. Rogers. I can take a joke as good as anyone else, but they need to do some research before they start in on something they don't know. Of course, it happened north of the 49th parallel, so it didn't really matter, right?

They said Mr. Rogers, and Roy Rogers. Considering the show is shown on TSN, a competitor of Rogers Sportsnet, I'll bet TSN employees got a good chuckle as well.I don't think the name would resonate to Americans who are wondering what Rogers is so they would still refer to it as SkyDome. Unless of course Rogers decides to buy any American telecommunications firm.

Mac the Knife 1,247 Posted February 3, 2005 Rogers Centre (or RC for short) Or SkyDome, which is what everyone else will call it...
Cashcleaner 0 Posted February 4, 2005 But how do we think of it as a logo?
Puckguy14 61 Posted February 4, 2005 Logo is weak, just like the name. In reference to the XYZ Center, there is one arena named after a product...The joke when HP took over the naming rights was that the Shark Tank could freeze up and restart if the Sharks played poorly. Also, anyone notice the Argos logo on the SKYDOME'S web site?I know they changed their look slightly but the wave is gone and its a more Carolina Panthers blue.
Phil 1 Posted February 4, 2005 Rogers Centre (or RC for short) Or SkyDome, which is what everyone else will call it... Speaking from experience, I know that when Winnipeg Stadium's naming rights were sold to CanadInns (a regional hotel chain), nobody thought the name would stick that well.Turns out, thanks to the media outlets and media personalities calling it CanadInns Stadium, the name has somewhat caught on. Not to say there aren't people who still call it Winnipeg Stadium (or just "the stadium," seeing as it's unlikely to be confused with any other stadium in the city), but I was surprised to see how quickly the new name was integrated in the consciousness of the city.In the case of SkyDome... well, SkyDome's clearly a more distinctive name and the "sky dome" is certainly more an integral part of the Toronto skyline than Winnipeg/CanadInns Stadium, so it will likely take a while longer to catch on. But I wouldn't be shocked to see it become fairly well known as "the RC" in a little while.

I never realised that until I was looking for a computer. It's odd, but I think it's good corporate name for a building. Sure beats naming it the Compaq Presario
