Anyone been to Frawley Stadium, home of the Blue Rocks? Great views.

Great views of Interstate 95, as I recall.

Yeah, but good views of Wilmington as well...

The smog...

Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo is great, but not in the classic sense. It's a new ballpark but has a very classy feel to it.

But the best I've been to is, without a doubt, Rosenblatt Stadium. This was for the College World Series, of course, but I wish I could have seen a minor league game there, too. Great stadium, great setting, great concessions ... and don't forget to eat at the Bohemian Cafe halfways between Rosenblatt and downtown Omaha.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! the rivercats home opener is on April 7th!!! i cant wait to get to the park, crack open a Coke, Eat a tri tip sandwitch, and watch my boys kick the crap out of the Portland Beevers!!!! and the stadium, which by the way, to me, has the best view of any stadium in california other than Pac Bell, is the most exciting park to watch a game because it is so close, yet it is so classy. AHHH yes, the pre baseball season fantasy. i cant wait

I've only been to Oldsmobile Park (home of the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League) and it's fantastic. This year the park will get some nice upgrades, including HDTV video boards. I'd love to go to some other parks around here, including West Michigan and Southwest Michigan of the MWL and Fifth Third Field in Toledo.

Last year, I road-tripped and saw 7 games in 7 cities in 5 days. The scheduling gods were with me. Here's a rundown of the minor-league parks I've been to:

Alexian Field - Schaumburg (IL) Flyers - Northern League

Great park with dimensions and a manual left-field scoreboard designed to pay homage to Wrigley. Hard-pressed to find a bad seat, even on the lawn.

Pohlman Field - Beloit (WI) Snappers - Midwest League

Tiny field with mostly metal bleachers, and an outfield of treed with a very short center field fence (under 390'.) Spartan accomodations, but the first-base line has added a spacious all-wood deck with picnic tables and full-service bar that's for everyone, not just private events. Home to $10 All-You-Can-Eat Mondays. Welcome to Wisconsin - where a 3,500 seat park has 12 beers on tap.

U.S. Steel Yard - Gary (IN) SouthShore RailCats - Northern League

Don't laugh - you *have* to visit Gary. Beauty of a new-school minor-league park in what is a great location, all things considered. Picnic seating on the 3rd base side, lawn seating (and some actual seats) in the outfield, private party hot tub in right center, great seating all around the rest of the park. Right field has a full-size Bennigan's which can be reached from inside or outside the park, and patrons can watch the game from a patio. Left field wall runs parallel to 5th Avenue, South Shore Line tracks, and the Chicago Skyway, with the U.S. Steel Mill visible in the distance.

Homer Stryker Field - Kalamazoo (MI) Kings - Frontier League

Yes, there really was a guy named Homer Stryker, and he was a baseball player (but a pitcher.) Bleachers and plastic bucket seats are raised above the field of play with facilities and concessions below. Party areas out in left and right field. Has a sort of bare-bones, park-district feel to it, but still provides a great fan experience. Granted, the day I went, there were a handful of adult fans and 4,500 area elementary school students, so that may have colored my experience.

Oldsmobile Park - Lansing (MI) Lugnuts - Midwest League

A huge beauty, dug into the ground well below street level. This creates some "monster" walls in both corners, a cavernous center field, and an interesting walk around the park.

Fifth Third Ballpark - West Michigan (Grand Rapids) Whitecaps - Midwest League

Monster park for Single-A ball, seating over 11K. Large private party area in right, and a large section of outfield bleachers in right center. Great sightlines all around, but not much for aesthetics. The skyboxes are covered in beige vinyl siding, which makes you feel like you're staring at an '80s suburban housing development every time you look back. The food can make you put on 20 pounds over 9 innings, though, with $5 quarts of beer and featured eats like "The Swimming Pig" and deep-fried cheesecake. Also the midwest's largest purveyor of foodstuffs served in helmets.

Silver Cross Field - Joliet (IL) Jackhammers - Northern League

Very nice park with train tracks running along the 3rd-base line. The park is very nice to look at, but the prices are near-major-league. It was the only stop on my trip where the best seat in the house cost me over $10. Also seems like a southern refuge for displaced Wrigley frat boys, so it seems to have the same mentality of "We know you're going to show up regardless, so we're not going to give you all that much." Would be an absolutely fantastic place to catch a game if they placed more emphasis on fan amenities. I have to admit, though, I've got a soft spot for the Guinness Pub on the 3rd-base line.

  • 2 months later...

Places I've been to...

1) Elfstrom Stadium (Kane County) - Pretty nice stadium, only live about 20-30 minutes away from there.

2) Epicenter (Rancho Cucamonga) - It's been a few years since I've been there. Great view of the mountains behind left field.

3) Price Cutter Park (Springfield/Ozark [moved after last year]) - Just a typical park, at least it is right by the highway.

I can't wait until I go to Hammons Field next month. If anyone has been there, give me some insight on the park. :D

Minor league stadiums passed in transit...

1) Rosenblatt Stadium (Omaha)

2) From a distance from the highway, whatever that stadium is in Toledo.

For me i've been to Keyspan Park in Brooklyn to some Cyclones games and there's a lovely view of The Cyclone roller coaster and Coney Island from the outfield. Great affordable baseball and we all had a good time on Coney Island afterwards.

There's also the Richmond Bank Park in Staten Island where the Baby Bombers play. On the edge of Staten Island, it offers a great view of the city and again offers great baseball at affordable prices.

I've been to several in my day...in ascending order of Rockability:

Price Cutter Park, Ozark, MO: Formerly home of the Ozark Mountain Ducks/Springfield-Ozark Mountain Ducks/Springfield-Ozark Ducks of the Texas-Louisiana League/Central Baseball League/Frontier League. It was exciting the first year or two because of the novelty - no minor league baseball in the Springfield area for almost 50 years. But the team stunk, the quality of baseball was low, the seats were uncomfortable and there was just one - ONE - road in and out. The place is vacant now.

Cashman Field, Las Vegas, NV: It's been a decade or so since I've been there - they were the Las Vegas Stars back then. Nothing really stood out about the place, other than the misters and the fans behind us that were taunting the mascot.

Nelson Wolff Stadium, San Antonio, TX: This was just a comfortable place to watch a ballgame. We had great box seats, the food was good and Henry the Puffy Taco rocks. It's also quite beautiful from the outside, with the bell towers. I'm kind of biased on this one. My wife and I went there on our honeymoon, so I have a soft spot for San Antonio. Plus we got to see former SMS Bear great Jason Hart playing for the Midland Rock Hounds.

Rosenblatt Stadium, Omaha, NE: Went there last summer. It's such a neat, historical yard. It was awesome being there just a year after SMS went two-and-a-que at the CWS (still regret not making that trip). Good food, cool press box/suite level looming over the grandstand. I don't remember much about the on-field experience. I went there with my wife, our daughter (3 at the time), and my sisters-in-law, their husbands and their daughters (3 and 2). It was fun just to watch the kids soak it all up.

Hammons Field, Springfield, MO: Totally a homer call. It's just over a year old. Brick facade with a cool railroad tressel-style support system. Big seats, spacious ailes, plenty of leg room. Food is good, but pricey ($5 for a draft beer, at a MINOR league game!?!? :cursing:). Not a bad seat in the house. Free parking within walking distance (if you know the neighborhoods). Video board in left field with the highest resolution of any big screen in the state (Busch, Kauffman, Arrowhead, Jones Dome). And the Cardinals put on a first class game, lots of promotions, but nothing over-the-top minor league.

The only minor league park I've been to is Fifth Third Field in Toledo. I can't imagine there are too many nicer AAA ballparks out there.
