Approaching Superdome/Canal Street exit off of I-10 East. Most of you have seen the aerials from just outside the dome that shows this 4 lane as just two humps rising from the water. This off ramp is just coming off the Eastbound "hump" and all of this where this pic was taken is underwater.

Unrelated to the dome, that is the Mississippi River to the right, taken from a parking garage. That is the French Quarter where the parking lots stop and the buildings begin.Immediately behind where I took this picture is the N.O. Rivermarket....and next door to that the infamous N.O. Convention Center, which although you cannot see it on TV is freaking HUGE and spans almost a quarter of a mile down the river bank. Not mentioned on TV,it is also the terminal for the cruise ships in New Orleans...which oddly I've heard nothing about during this whole crisis.

I envision a new Superdome. Probably called the "Katrina Memorial Superdome". It'd be huge. Have a hotel attached. Seat some absurd number of people, like maybe even up to 115,000 people for big events like the Super Bowl (for actual Saints home games, it'd be less, of course.).

And they should make it so that it CAN withstand any future hurricanes. Make it able to withstand Category 5 winds. Build it with alternative power-means (Solar Panels?) so that it can be powered after catastrophic events.

Insert Witty Signature Here.

Torn down the current Superdome and build a new one? For what team?

It's sounding very strong that the Saints will move away NOLA after 2005.

The Saints have been buggin about a new stadium for a while now... but if the saints still choose to leave you would use the new stadium for Super Bowls, NCAA, concerts, etc.

See, you're assuming that New Orleans will be habitable in a few years. That isn't guaranteed at this point. It's currently looking like a Third World country down there, what with all the disease, the strewn corpses, the gas leaks, the polluted water and soil....to assume that the city won't become a large Love Canal is at this point a controversial assumption.

I believe that New Orleans will be partially rebuilt. I agree that the EPA will have a major project on its hands decontaminating the soil. As for a team operating out of the city, there is another thing to consider. By the time the city is partially rebuilt, many of the evacuees will have new lives established elsewhere. Will the city even have a large enough population to support a major sports franchise? Then there is the bigger picture of the entire Mississippi delta being at risk due to rising sea levels. How much money do you throw at this and is it worth it?

The port of New Orleans needs to be reestablished, but I also believe that some of the land should be restored as wetlands.

Long story short, the bayou will probably be without a major franchise for a very long time.

Side Note: Since cajuns are descendants of Acadians, they rightfully could go back to Canada... :D

you have to go back to galviston to get a true feel for what the future holds for new orleans. Now it is true that we live in a much further advanced society than they did in 1900, but the impact of this hurricane will be similar. Galviston's destruction is one of the things that led to Houston's growth. Businesses and people picked up and moved to Houston from Galviston. That is likely to happen here as well.

CONFIRMED ON SPORTSCENTER

Warren Louis Reuther, Jr. a member of the Superdome commision states that the roof is so damaged, that it's gonna have to come down. According to ESPN's Dan Patrick, the Superdome was to resist winds up to 200 mph.

And who is gonna pay for this? That would be one mighty large bill once its said and done

When (can't say if now, because its coming.) it comes down, that means at least 2-3 seasons the Saints, Sugar Bowl, New Orleans Bowl, Tulane, Final Four, and weren't they on the long term for the Super Bowl list soon? Something tells me Tagliabue pushes Benson to Los Angeles big time. Sad to see the NFL take advantage of this, but it could happen.

Life goes on. Besides, what is the alternative?
