BaltimoreFan
Ramon Hernandez reportedly signed 4/27 with the Orioles. ?!So the Orioles dump Fasano and snag an overall serious upgrade behind the plate for a reasonable cost, even though they still have Javy Lopez.Meanwhile, up I-95, the Phillies could've had Hernandez, chose to take the Orioles backup, so he can come to Philly and back up LIEBERTHAL?!?!WTF? I expect Javy Lopez to play DH and 1B for the begining of the season, then be traded. Also Fasano might not be a big name, he should surprise you. When Javy went out last season, Fasano stepped up and played very well. You got a solid backup very cheap.

It's not that I don't like Fasano. It's that the Phils could've had a serviceable starter behind the plate in Ramon Hernandez, and whiffed. Then again, they've been trying to convince themselves that Mike Lieberthal could be a big league catcher since he was a scrawny 18-year old they spent a 1st-round draft pick on. "Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

nym1231
The newest deal coming from Queens, Omar Minaya signed agless 47 year old Julio Franco to a two-year deal. It's amazing. There are so many players that start falling apart in their early 30s. This man could be a father of many in the Majors yet is probably in better condition than 99% WITHOUT using steroids. CS85
Gotta love that! Yahoo!'s reporting that Miguel Tejada wants out of Baltimore:SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada said Thursday he's unhappy with the team's direction and wants to be traded. "I've been with the Orioles for two years and things haven't gone in the direction that we were expecting, so I think the best thing will be a change of scenery," Tejada told The Associated Press during a telephone interview in his native Dominican Republic. Tejada signed a $72 million, six-year contract with the Orioles before the 2004 season. He hit .304 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs this year, but Baltimore finished 21 games behind the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the AL East. "I've done many things with this team and I haven't seen results, and the other teams are getting stronger while the Orioles have not made any signings to strengthen the club," said Tejada, the 2002 AL MVP while with Oakland. Orioles owner Peter Angelos and team executive vice president Mike Flanagan did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Boston traded shortstop Edgar Renteria to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for third base prospect Andy Marte. In other news, free agent catcher Ramon Hernandez and the Orioles agreed to a $27.5 million, four-year contract. Hernandez's deal is contingent on a physical, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations said Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity. The agreement, which includes a club option for 2010, probably will not be completed until next week, the official said. The 29-year-old Hernandez batted .290 last season with the San Diego Padres. He had 12 home runs and 58 RBIs, but his main value is behind the plate, where he has a reputation for calling a smart game and capably handling a pitching staff. The addition of Hernandez will mean less time behind the plate for Orioles catcher Javy Lopez, who complained of sore knees toward the end of last season. Lopez is eager to spend more time as a designated hitter and at first base. Baltimore also might trade Lopez for a starting pitcher, one of the team's biggest needs. Hernandez broke into the majors in 1999 with Oakland and played five seasons with the Athletics before being traded to San Diego in November 2003. In 805 career games, he's batting .262 with 90 homers and 384 RBIs. Hernandez was enjoying an excellent 2005 season before injuring his left wrist diving back into first base at Minnesota on June 17. He had surgery on July 29, but returned to hit .349 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 83 at-bats in the last month to help the Padres win the NL West title. He gets $4.5 million next year, $6.5 million in 2007, $7.5 million in 2008 and $8 million in 2009. Baltimore has an $8.5 million option for 2010 with a $1 million buyout. AP Sports Writers Ronald Blum in Dallas and David Ginsburg in Baltimore contributed to this report. Quote "You are nothing more than a small cancer on this message board.
