Vazquez likely will be traded to White Sox

Josh Byrnes may be close to clearing his first big hurdle as new general manager of the Diamondbacks - trading Javier Vazquez.

The Diamondbacks could be on the verge of sending Vazquez to the Chicago White Sox for a package that would include pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and outfield prospect Chris Young, a deal that would satisfy Vazquez's request to pitch closer to his native Puerto Rico while returning some young talent to Arizona.

Byrnes, reached Tuesday night, wouldn't comment on the status of trade talks, but it is known the White Sox and Diamondbacks were in contact Tuesday about a deal.

Published reports indicated that the White Sox could send a starting pitcher - perhaps Jon Garland, Jose Contreras or Hernandez - to the Diamondbacks as well as Young, a Double-A center fielder.

But an American League source intimated Tuesday that neither Garland nor Contreras was likely to be a part of the deal.

That would leave Hernandez, the Cuban right-hander with four World Series rings and a reputation as a big-game pitcher.

Hernandez, listed at 36 but who reportedly could be as old as 40, went 9-9 with a 5.12 ERA last season. He is due to be paid $4.5 million in base salary next season, the last in a two-year deal he signed with the White Sox.

Hernandez, who has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, has a career postseason mark of 12-3 with a 2.55 ERA.

Vazquez is owed $24 million over two years, but by demanding a trade - his right as a player dealt in the middle of a multiyear contract - he forfeited the opportunity to become a free agent at the conclusion of his current deal. Should the trade go through, the White Sox would have the option of offering him arbitration for a third season.

It is not known if the White Sox would receive any money from the Diamondbacks, who are getting $3 million each of the next two seasons from the New York Yankees as part of the Randy Johnson trade that brought Vazquez to Arizona in December 2004. Byrnes has suggested in recent weeks the club would likely not be kicking in any cash.

Young, 22, a highly regarded prospect, could be the key to the deal. In Double-A Birmingham, he hit .277 with a .377 on-base percentage, 41 doubles, 26 home runs and 32 stolen bases. He was recently named the ninth-best prospect in the Arizona Fall League.

This Chris Young better be pretty effin' good, cos El Duque is not what I consider a good return on Javier Vazquez. <_<

They must have dropped Puerto Rico in Lake Michigan overnight. Last time I checked, Puerto Rico was pretty damn far.

ESPN has confirmed that the CHW-ARI deal has been completed. Beats me why the hell the White Sox would make the trade.

I've got a map of the US in my office and, in fairness to Javy, Chicago is not as far north as Phoenix is west w/ respect to Puerto Rico. In fact, I looked it up online -- Phoenix is 3006 miles from San Juan, whilst Chicago is only 2052 miles from San Juan. He's cut his travel by 1/3, which is consistent w/ his stated reason for requesting the trade.

My bigger concern is the haul the Diamondbacks got in return. El Duque is a warrior and is a great pressure pitcher, but he's not gonna be a workhorse. I'd have preferred Contreras or Garland -- tho both will be expensive to re-sign as FAs next year. All things considered, Hernandez and Vizcaino are pretty serviceable arms.

It sounds like Chris Young is gonna be a gem. Batting .277/.377/.545 with 26 HR, 77 RBI and 100 runs scored in 466 at-bats as a 21-year old in AA is no small feat. And he's reportedly a good defensive CF, which is critical to a team that has the bulk of its talent at the IF and OF corners.

I read the Diamondbacks kicked $5M into the deal after having received $9M from the Yankees in the original trade. I'd prefer that there were no cash involved, but I'm not disappointed given the short-term and long-term help they acquired in the deal.

I'm happy. Nice work, GM Josh Byrnes. Now go break up the logjam at the corners and spend some dough on pitching.

Go Diamondbacks!

The Cubs have expressed interest in Jacque Jones to play LF...

Moose

I dont want Jacque to go...

I guess the chances of the Twins signing him back are pretty much none. I heard he has at least a few 3 year deals on the table, with more to come. I heard KC wants him, but he wants to be on a contender. So why is he lookin at the Cubs? ^_^

tony bautista to twins <_<

Tony Batista... oh man... I love that guy's swing. It's so... awkward.

I think we all know that his best days are behind him though, back when he was a Blue Jay.

I remember when he played with the Diamondbacks. Every time I saw him, he'd hit a BOMB into the bleachers. I was pissed when Arizona dealt him for the washed-up Dan Plesac.

Of course, his plate discipline is inversely proportional to his power. It's homerun or strikeout w/ Tony B.

Good luck w/ that, Twinkies.

Garciaparra agrees to one-year deal with Dodgers

ESPN.com news services

The Los Angeles Dodgers are slowly becoming the West Coast version of the Red Sox after Nomar Garciaparra agreed in principle to an incentive-laden one-year deal, ESPN's Peter Gammons confirmed.

Garciaparra, who still needs to take a physical and finalize contract details, will likely play first base for the Dodgers. The deal has a base salary of $6 million and could be worth as much as $8 million, the New York Post reported.

The Yankees, Astros and Indians were originally interested in Garciaparra but we're told by Garciaparra's agent, Arn Tellum, of his choice to join the Dodgers.

Garciaparra played under recently hired Dodgers manager Grady Little in 2002-03 with the Boston Red Sox and was teammates with pitcher Derek Lowe and third baseman Bill Mueller in Boston. Lowe signed with Los Angeles last winter, and Mueller joined the Dodgers this week.

Garciaparra was considered one of baseball's best shortstops for several years while playing with the Red Sox, but his playing time was limited the past two seasons because of injuries. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs midway through the 2004 season.

A five-time All-Star with the Red Sox, Garciaparra hit .283 with nine homers and 30 RBI in 62 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, when he earned $8.25 million. He tore his left groin running out of the batter's box in St. Louis on April 20 and didn't return until Aug. 5.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Not a shocker that he's going to the Dodgers, but plaing first base??  I guess I just figured he'd make a better third baseman.

So, Mueller plays 3B, Furcal plays SS, Kent plays 2B and Nomar plays 1B. Where does that leave Izturis, the best fielder of the bunch and pretty good top-of-the-order hitter? On the bench, evidently. And of course their OF will consist of the wholly unreliable JD Drew and a collection of platoon players. Nice to see the Dodgers build a team w/ parts that don't fit.

Go Diamondbacks! (Don't ask about our glut of corner IF/OF.)

It's gonna be one of two ways:

Nomar at 2nd and Kent at 1st, or Nomar used as a utility man. He's most likely not gonna be an everyday player for them.

I had a crazy dream last night that Nomar shocked everyone and signed with the Cardinals. I thought it wasnt a bad fit either...
