Shmee
The trouble might come in differentiating the two on the ice because Scott Thornton was already informed the team's equipment staff doesn't plan to add an 'S' or a 'J' to the backs of their respective jerseys.Doesn't matter, said Scott."I'm pretty sure everyone knows who Joe is," he said with a laugh. The entire article can be read here. This bit is at the end. With teams ignoring the fact that players all wear different numbers to differentiate themselves from one another, the Sharks have finally gotten it right. Sure beats the Broncos style of putting players' FULL names on their backs. The world's foremost practitioners of professional tag-team wrestling. WSU151
Sure beats the Broncos style of putting players' FULL names on their backs. You do realize other teams do that too, right? BBTV
I like the initials, myself. I don't mind initials, but it probably wouldn't look right with vertically arched names (vs. straight names.) ElwoodCuse
Is this governed by rule in the oh-so-nitpicky NFL? Is there an exemption for offense/defense? Steve and Bryant Young never had initials on their 49ers jerseys but they did play on different sides of the ball.
Bouj
Is this governed by rule in the oh-so-nitpicky NFL? Is there an exemption for offense/defense? Steve and Bryant Young never had initials on their 49ers jerseys but they did play on different sides of the ball. I'm almost 100% the NFL covers this now. I think (again, not totally sure, but almost sure) the rule is if you have 2 players that have the same surname, you have to go to the first initial. If the players have the same first initial, then you either have to go complete name or go no initial at all. I think the preferred (or rather, "strongly encouraged") method is complete name, which I personally think looks stupid.I remember reading this a while back while reading about all the ridiculous things that the NFL monitors/requires concerning the uniforms. Sodboy13
Remember when Robert Smith had his first name in teeny-tiny block letters above his last name? Now that was silliness. As for the rule of first inital or full name, why can't you just go with the first two letters of the name? Example: Chad Jones and Cris Jones play on the same team. Their nameplates read CH. JONES and CR. JONES respectively. I know I've seen this done. What's so wrong about it? At the risk of sounding like an ignorant a-hole, one was a giant black guy and the other was a white quarterback(the most recognizable guy on the team). my favorite was jack and jim youngblood from the 70s/80s rams. GasHouse1934
Yes, the Youngbloods...Jack and Jim...and they are completely unrelated. Each had his full name on the back, first name above surname, same size font. I always thought that looked silly.Fred(First post...great board!)
