Entrance Music Controversy

How ridiculous is this?... Earlier in the week, Yankee fanns got all bent out of shape because new Mets closer Billy Wagner uses Metallica's "Enter Sandman" as when he comes out from the bullpen to close a game. Honestly, who cares?? It's just music. Did anybody outside of Yankee diehards even know Rivera even used music to come to the hill?? The guys from Metallica came out this week and said they are cool with both using their music, so I guess it's settled right? But Yankees fans are still pissed. Are Yankee fans ever happy?? It's a song! Get over it!!

And if that wasn't enough, we have yet another pissed off closer.

Brian Fuentes, closer for the Rockies, is upset because the people at Coors Field "accidentally" blasted the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." over the PA instead of the hardcore Staind song Fuentes had requested when he runs out to the mound. This one I can kind of understand. How the hell do you expect to shut down the opposing team when you've just head that horrible disco anthem instead of the hardcore song that's gonna amp you to wanna go 1-2-3 in the 9th?? In that case, they might as well blast some Bee Gees or Wham. Let's hope the people at Coors can get it right next time ... As if the team can't get any worse!

My bad.

Basically, Yankee fans are pissed because they want Rivera to be the only New York closer to run out to Enter Sandman.

It's not just Yankee Fans. There are Mets fans against i because it reminds them of Rivera. Just like most Mets fans don't like it when on some occasions the MEts play "New York, New York" after games (Another Yankee thing).

I dont care what he uses as losing as he gets saves and dose not blow games. This contropversy started becuase of Mike and the Mad Dog who on opening day as usually had nothing good to say about the Mets win just went on and on and on and on about the traffic to Shea hwo they were lucky to win and how wrong it is to steal Riveras song.

The exhange went something like this. And keep in mund there show is syndicated on the YES Network aka the Yankee Brianwashing Service.

Mike: This is the Yankees song its so typical of the Mets to steal from the Yankees, its just the JV trying to becoem the Varisty.

Mad Dog: Laughs its so amaturish its not funny how cna they get away with this Billy Wagner hhhhhhhhhhh (Mad Dog makes annoying squeeks when he talks).

M: Its typical they Mets can never be the Yankees even if they win 10 championships in a row that Pinstripe uniform..

MD: I know its just the Mets trying to copy off teh Yankees its ridiculous

Lets goi the phones

Hi Im Brian a Met fan from Queens i just got back from the game and the fnas were standing teh whole inning for Wag

MD what does that matter teh Yankee fans stands for Rivers theres eltricty in the air.

BfromQ: yeah but Wagner had the song when he wass in Houston and Philly

M: IT Does not ammteer tahts houston or Philly this is New York and in New York the Mets cant steal from the Yankees.

BfromQ: But Wagner really is a die hard Metallica fan his cousin was rodie with the band

MD: That does not matter I dont care if hes in Metallica he has no right to use any Mettalica song there are other bands out there

M: Yes he can use Jethro Thull they are the most fampous heavy metalk band in the world

BfroQ actua;ll Thull is not

M dont dare ocome on here and correct us we know more then you

M: Ridiculous dont teh fans knwo we wrote the book on NY sports and thuis are the final word and aturhoirty

Lets take another call

Sam from Manhattan

MD:Yeah dog i agree with everything you said

Mike taht is right Sam we are correct and thats why you are are caller for the day

Sam I feel violated and angry as a Yankee fan

MD as you should this is highway robbery

and it went on and on like that for like 2 hours!!!!

This is a total joke since when has enterance music became declared exclusive? This is why sometimes it is hell to be a Mets fan we go through more stupid crap then anyone else from idiots affraid to criticze the Yankees because they are on YES so just hurl all they can at the Mets.

In January of 2005 the Mets had to sign Carlos Beltran, in Jan of 2006 the Mets were stupid to sign Beltran.

In August of 2004 Kris Benson is over rated not a big wnner Mets should not have gotten him. In Feb of 2006 Benson was the Mets ace and a potential Cy Young and the Mets just gave away teh pennant.

Bottom line is Mike and the Mad Dog are the two smuggest :censored:s in radio but they are the biggest sports talk show here so allot of this happens al the time.

Don't forget about "Loser" by 3 Doors Down.

In fact, I've been to a few baseball games where the sound man would play the intro to "I'm a Loser" by The Beatles after an opposing batter struck out. The closest we do at Troy is play "Help!" whenever the opposing team changes pitchers.

For Kolb, I would have thought that "I'm Down" would have been a more appropriate Beatles song for him.

Wow.

A fabricated controversy about a problem that exists for arbitrary resons to begin with. Scrap ALL player entrance music, be done with it. Neither Rivera nor Wagner have proprietary rights over "Enter Sandman" or any other song, and I doubt either cares what the other enters a game to.

Worse still, the phone calls Tank transcribed underscore the bigger problem - giving microphones and 50,000 watts of radio power to ignoramuses who know far less than they think they know. The caller raised a valid point, that Wags used the song in Houston and Philadelphia. The response was that it doesn't matter, because this is New York.? Not only is that statement illogical, and grossly ignorant of the facts presented, but overly self-important, even for New Yorkers. (Before anyone chooses to jump down my throat for saying this, I know of which I speak - my mother's from NYC, as is most of my wife's family. So I get it on all sides.)

But what's worse, is these talking heads get the last word, and their opinion is cemented as fact. Worse still, a vast majority of the sycophants who tune in every day accept mistruths as gospel.

It's why my sports talk-show time is plummeting by the day, although now that Philadelphia has a 2nd sports-talk station where rational discourse is encouraged instead of "who can yell louder and denigrate better", I may have a safe outlet.

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

2007nleastchamps.png

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

As a Mets fan, I really don't care what Billy Wagner comes out to. Yeah, it would be nice if it was something different so there wouldn't be a Yankee comparison, but then again, Wagner has been using the song I believe like 3 years longer than Rivera started using it.

It really is just manufactured controversy from the worst talk radio personalities, Mike and the Mad Dog. Tank had it to a tee... I was actually watching that broadcast on YES during lunch this past week, and that's more or less how it went down. In between insulting the Mets' network SNY and tearing apart any commentator as if John Sterling was G-d's gift to baseball. I hated Sterling even when he did All Star Baseball on N64... "I knew it... he knew it... and the crowd knew it." Shut up. (EDIT - Looking back at this... was it John Sterling or Michael Kay who did ASB?)

If Wagner wants to keep the music, cool. Noone will care except pissed Yankees fans... and maybe a few Mets fans who just don't enjoy being reminded about the boys from the Bronx.

As for the YMCA... that's different. You can't get hyped to YMCA. The Village People don't intimidate anyone... you hear Enter Sandman, on some level you think "uh oh, this came is over." YMCA, not so much.

Heres the biggest joke of all lets compare the Mets new network to YES and the other 2 RSNs here MSG and FSNY.

Sure SNY has had some glitches, all new channels do when they start its to be expected there are kinks heres and there.

YES Network shows Yankee Games and Nets games, but if the Yankees are playing the Nets get farmed off to another channel even if its improtnat playoff game.

MSG/FSNY both owned by Cablevision show Knicks, Rangers, Islanders and Devils games with Knicks alwys gettings first priroity on MSG even they are unwatchable. If there is a conflict Rnagers will be on FSNY or on MSG 2 which is only on few systems as aux channel when there are too many conflicts.

Islanders and Devils are on FSNY and few conlficts reslut but occassional a game ends up on MSG if the Knicks or Rnagers are nt playong or MSG 2 with few being able to see it.

SNY has just the Mets for now they tried to get the Devils but it didn't work out, maybe they can land the Islanders, it would really benefit the Isles if they did go to SNY, as it would help them get theior own indentity on TV, and it would help SNY from November to March when there is no baseball.

SNY has also said its the cable home of the Jets so there will be allot of Jets news and shows about teh Jets on it but since teh NFL is all on free TV there will be no games.

When games are not on and they need filler on MSG you can find one local program on MSG called Sportsdesk its an ok highigt show but the Garden teams get priority, and coverage of other teams in actually poor even when the Mets were on there last year, it was as if the Mets game was over and they just had one postgame report.

FSNY just has the templated Fox Sporst Net Programs like Best Damn which is a misnomber if I ever heard it that show has long since jumped the shark.

There are also other show like Halls of Fame with the intellorable Fran Heally which they would not let him out of his contract for and thus ended 20 years of Mets fns misery as he is longer in their booth. He even did the Mets weekly show (Inside Pitch) I never watched it because of that.

Occasionally MSG shows classic games for the Knicks and Rangers. They occasionally showed Mets agmes too last year, but that was like once in a tottal blue moon.

YES when the Yanks are not on simulcast Miek and teh Mad Dog as mentioned before and brings prorgams like Center Stage and interview show hosted by Yankees announcer Michael Kay thats done in a studio that looks like a High School Production. Then it has Yankeeography an A&E bigoraphy type show about Yankee legends that make it sound as if players like Reggie Jackson did not wear pinstripes his life would have been meaningless. YES has classic Yankee games all the time (never shows Nets classic btw). They even show movies hosted by Yogi Berra, and have weekly Yankee shows one for kids one of team news. In football season they have a Giants show and a NFL preview show.

And most painfully of all they featyre a realisty show of 4 fans from different backgrounds living together and going to all 162 Yankee games, showing them cheering for the Yankees and going to museums and mocking fans in other citiues, watching it is like taking a bat and smacking yourself in the head 9 times just for the hell of it.

Id dont hate the Yankees they are in the AL they are New York, but watching the YES Network you can see why people hate thee team.

Sports news and highlights on YES, nope they have a few updates durring Yankee games but its Yankee Yankeee Yankee even when they lose they are still great stuff. The YES Network is like a Communist dicatorship offical channel where you only see good news surrounding the great leader and hopw hearty the crops are, (The Yankees Picthing dose not suck it is just off to a slow start they will get stronger and the Yankees will florish)

All while every otehr commerical break shows a classic Yankee moment, someone once mentioned the Yankees not being so good he was not seen again.

SNY on the otehr hand has a Sportsnews Program on 3 times a day and repeated in the mroninsg similallary to ESPN Sportscenter. Thsi show gives you all sports news with an emphishs on all of New Yorks teams not just the Mets. They have a beat reporter with the Yanks they dont ignore the Yanks. They have a nightly round table show too.

SNY may be the new kid but I say it is already the best of the 4 and before Miek and the Mad Dog say it sucks they should look at YES objectively and not be shills.

As a Yankee fan I find this over the edge retarded. As an 1983-1991 Metallica fan I find that everyone within earshot should listen to their music. Whichever closer had Enter Sandman first should be able to keep it. If both Wagner and Rivera are Metallica fans then they'll have plenty of songs too choose from.

I think MLB should ban all entrance themes for closers period. End of flucking controversy. Same for batters. Play some music between batters or innings but do it randomly as part of the ambience. Don't give each player a special intro. They already make millions of dollars. They want entry music? Let them use some of those dollars for the priviledge of scrubbing my floor. I'll play something special for them if they do the job right.

You got to admit that Hoffman's entrance is one of the best in baseball. It's part of his "mystique" per se, and it gets the fans fired up.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Tank in a bit of defense of Yes for alittle bit the Yankeeography shows and other Yankee documentries they show are actually made by MLB. All they really are are previous MLB productions re-editted for the YES Network. I remember after the 2003 ALCS there was a show on ESPN made by MLB on it, then a few weeks later there was one on YES. There were the exact same thing except they changes the title for the YES one had made John Sterling the narrator.

But it is the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network. It is going to be mostly Yankees stuff and going to be pro Yankees. Sure there have been extreme incidents, notably the Don Zimmer not being shown during the 2003 season, however all regional sports networks where the teams have an interest in them are going to be like that. I'm sure if someone rips the Red Sox on NESN they will be fired. Same thing for SNY, when the season starts to go south and someone rips the Mets management I am sure they will be fired.
