The "A" shield was a great helmet logo (even if it's a little derivative of the Toronto Argonauts, and college monograms almost always derive from the school's name, not its nickname). But this can still be considered a partial victory, as the airbrushed 2-tone helmet is gone from college football.I always thought the "SD" monogram with the spear running through it would be a great football helmet logo. Someone posted a while back that Nike had signed on with SDSU (and vice-versa), but I'm not sure if that's a Nike jersey there in the photo. Smart is believing half of what you hear. The text is way too small and that cherry red chrome look would seem more appropriate on a 70's era motorcycle helmet. Darken the red, get rid of the glitter and beef up the letters, then let's talk. It used a concept nobody had done before, and it worked while still maintaining a fairly simple look and not being obnoxious. The new helmet, while it looks more traditional, is basically what many other schools have: the school's primary color with the name on it (see Maryland, Pitt, Illinois, Southern Miss, UTEP, Tulsa, Ohio, Toledo, UNLV, TCU, Cal, UCLA, Florida, Ole Miss, Boise State, Idaho, etc., and that's not to mention the ones that use a school abbreviation on it, like Wake Forest or Missouri). BORRRRing!None of the aforementioned schools have a particularily iconic helmet. In my opinion, it's much better to go with something unique, if you can avoid being downright ugly. oh ,my god ,i strong recommend you to have a visit on the website ,or if i'm the president ,i would have an barceque with the anthor of the articel . dfwabel Posted July 18, 2006 Share Posted July 18, 2006 Teh new wordmark is fine, but like some other posters, I prefered teh uniqueness of the two-toned shell with the shielded A logo (without Aztecs from 9 to Noon). Still , it is more creative than these: If the branding of the new look for the university is important, than I personally think the shield should be primary. Could be the new jersey, but I would think Nike would have done a big on-campus unveil first. Didn't hear anything about it.Little pic from last year. You can see the Russell mark on the right collarbone area.The media day pic has a little bit of white in the area, but it's at such a severe angle it's impossible to tell. I don't know if Russell trademarked the font, but they definitely describe as being unique to SDSU (according to the 2000 press release introducing the air-brushed helmets)...I think it's called "Aztec" font, or something close to it. The thing is, it's so similar to the Colorado Avalanche font, and the Aztecs' font was used on Avs' replica jerseys before the Aztecs' switch in 2000. Also, East Carolina had the same font on Russell jerseys for a year or two. That number font is definitely not proprietary to the wordmark. Smart is believing half of what you hear. However it is really bright and shiny, the red is really vibrant. I like that. The World Basketball Championship, the Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Iraq: Every day there's further proof that we, as a nation, are not very good at international competition. They're the same numbers used by the Colorado Avalanche, and either Southern or Grambling Universities. goaztecs Posted July 18, 2006 Share Posted July 18, 2006 As an alum I would have liked them to go back to just Aztecs on the sides of the helmet or at least just the A Shield logo. As for the jersey in the pic, that is last year's jersey. Coach Long wants something more simple so the Aztecs might look like Oklahoma, but we shall see in August.
