What's the worst you've ever been burned on a jersey purchase?

to sum up a point that's bounced around here a bit in the thread: When is it okay to dig back out the jersey of a player who was great for your team but left before their playing career ended? Like, say, for those Raptor fans north of the Maple Curtain, when can they break out the Vince Carter throwbacks? What's the time definition for that? A year after he retires? Two? Two years after he's left? Okay, clearly you wouldn't want to wear a Carter Raps jersey during that first-round series, but otherwise...when will it be safe, and what's a standard time we can agree on?

I'd personally say two years after retirement, maybe three. Unless it was a really bad breakup between the player and the club (Damon to the Yankees, anyone...) in which case you may never want to break that jersey out again.

and can I get some support for the guys who *do* wear jerseys like that to games? Honestly, yes, he left, but with modern sports where they are, that's how it goes; players rarely stick with one team for their entire careers. Remember him for what he did on the court and off for your team (now, if *that's* not something to remember him for, then forget about it and heckle all you want...).

I still wear my Bruins Potvin jersey to all the Bruins games I go to - most people actually compliment me on it, surprisingly. It's different and not an obvious choice for a jersey, and I love the player and the team, so it works for me. The way their goaltending was this year, they should probably give Felix a call.

Forgot about my John Kitna Bengals Jersey. It was a 10 dollar replica that I bought during the Bengals most recent playoff season. I'm probably the only Kitna fan left in Bengal nation, but I think what he did to help out Carson Palmer was outstanding. I guess I wasn't burned because it was only $10 afterall and it's a head turner whenever I wear it. It's great for pickup football games, I get to pretend I'm a short quarterback with small hands.

Got Priest Holmes Home and Away, a year later he's done.

Got the Keyshawn Bucs jersey, they won the Super Bowl, but then he's gone.

Jevon Kearse Titans jersey was worn for a few seasons before he was gone.

Fricken got a Bledsoe Bills jersey then the next year he went to Dallas.

Biggest burn, Topeka Tarantulas jersey. Got for christmas, and got to wear it until March. then they were defunct.

Could someone please forward this post to the "letters to the editor" section of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette? You can't go to an event without some turd with a mullet wearing his Jagr jersey, Greg Lloyd, or Rod Woodson jersey. Heck, last year I saw a couple of guys with Kevin Greene, Barry Foster, and Kordell Stewart.

I saw this discussed on a story on ESPN.com or something similar not too long ago about jersey do's and don'ts.

If a guy retires from the team, then keep on wearing the jersey all you want.

If the guy leaves a team and continutes playing for another team, the proposed a formula like "You have to wait half as long as the guy played for your team before you can wear it again."

Therefore, if Daunte Culpepper was Viking for 6 years, you need to wait 3 years before wearing it again.

I thought that had some merit. Exceptions to be sure, but not a bad system.

Eagles' possibly authentic (also possibly stolen off the back of a delivery truck) #59 Mike Mamula jersey. I'd be more broken up over it were it not for 2 mitigating factors:

1. It only set me back $10 for a pro-weight jersey with all the proper embroidery (name, number, sleeve patches) at Value City, and it wasn't like my heart was set on it - we were passing through the mall through VC and it caught my eye; for $10, what the heck...

2. The other choices were a #7 Bobby Hoying (off the team by 1999) or #82 Chris T. Jones (off the team by 1999). I went with the guy who was still ripping the team off for a fat paycheck.

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Does this system work for when a team changes jerseys, logos, or caps? Just wondering when I can wear items that teams don't wear anymore.

I would have to say mine was T.O. for the one year he was with the Eagles. He did a great thing for them, but trying to start all that crap over playing with a bad foot is pathetic. It was a waste of my money, and I'd gladly sell it to anyone if anybody wanted it.

Authentic, or replica?

I've burned because they didn't fit after a few months, jerseys that you were given as a child before the age of 14, personally I had Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, and Clyde Drexler. Children should be given t-shirts not jerseys.

DAVID CARR, home and away, I want my money back for those.

Houston Aeros, AHL minor league hockey, home white from 1999. They won the IHL championship and changed the design next year. Bought next years version. Very nice old school jersey, one of my favorite jerseys. Next year changed the logo. So I was 0 for 2.

Are you serious? I'd rock the casbah out of a Lloyd, Woodson, Greene, or Foster jersey.

And if any of these jerseys you guys are mentioning are still "hanging in the back of your closet" and are a size Medium or 40-48 (depending on the maker)...shoot me a PM if you're interested in selling. ^_^

Despite that I think that is one of the dumbest set of rules ive ever read (Most people dont have that kind of money to be tossing on sports memorabilia), I think that last rule was just enough to convince me to pick up that Bo Hart Cardinals jersey ive always wanted.

Deion Sanders #21...

San Francisco 49ers.

That's not as bad as what I did...

I got a Deion Sanders #21 orange Broncos authentic jersey during the 94/95 offseason when all the rumors had him coming to the Broncos, then he signed with Dallas.

That's why I waited to pick up my Iverson Nuggets jersey until AFTER they got him, unfortunately I wanted a swingman and they weren't going to be available until April (this was right after the trade) so I got a replica instead, now I am trying to find a way to get the swingman and unload the replica.

I still wear my LaPhonso Ellis Nuggets jerseys, my Eddie George, Javon Kearse & Steve McNair Titans jerseys all the time. I'll also wear my Jake Plummer, Shannon Sharpe & Terrell Davis Broncos jerseys as well.
