What's the worst you've ever been burned on a jersey purchase?

What's the worst you've ever been burned on a jersey? Did you buy one or just get one customized only to have the player get arrested or start an ugly holdout, never to play for the team again?

I've had a couple of clinkers in my time.

I found a place that was selling old Vikings jerseys after they changed to Reebok. I had my choice of... Randy Moss or Daunte Culpepper for $30 each. I decided to go with Moss, but as time passed it turned out that was a no-win situation no matter what I had done.

I also really took a liking to an Ottawa Senators jersey and went with, you guessed it, Alexei Yashin. Ooops. The next year he began his year long holdout, played one more year to fulfill his contract and got traded to the Islanders. I sold it on ebay with the suggestion that you could change the nameplate to Spezza.

First off, I'm a die hard Vancouver Canucks fan. Anyways, I bought the Team Canada :flagcanada: swift jersey in preparation for the World Juniors hat were being held in town. Anyways, with the same jerseys beign used for the Olympics I got "Bertuzzi 14" on the back of it. Needless to say, he sucked and is no longer a Canucks. I wish I kept it blank. :)

In late December 2003, I bought two shiny white 49ers jerseys at the local Foot Action: Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens. Garcia was released less than two weeks later, and Owens was gone within a few months. And by April, I wore a size Medium jersey rather than the XLs that I had bought, so they've been hanging in my closet ever since. I might have worn each jersey once. I did only pay about $70 for both of them, but that was a lot of money back in high school.

Chris Hope Steelers replica in 2005, gone the next season to the Titans. $78 for a jersey I wore maybe 5 times.

I also bought an authentic Willis McGahee jersey for $50 on Ebay a few months ago. I guess it's really not a "burn" because I couldn't turn it down at $50, but what I really wanted was a Bills jersey to strip and customize. I didn't see any sense in stripping a perfectly good current-player jersey, so I offered to trade it straight-up for a blank or traded-player Bills authentic. Aaaand a few weeks later, he was traded, so now it's going full circle to the original plan: stripped and customized.

true story:

i bought a john vanbiesbrouck panthers white jersey, 1996 style (with single color non-arched nameplate)

i wore it 2 times before he went on his racial rant against trevor daley (whom he was coaching with the greyhounds)

i've refused to wear it ever since. haven't found anyone willing to buy it, either.

it sucks, because i love the jersey... i just wish the name/number was skrudland now. :(

I dropped $200 on an authentic Oakland Athletics Alt Eric Byrnes jersey about three weeks before he was traded to the Rockies and the eventually the Orioles. Worst part is I couldve waited three weeks to buy the same jersey in Nick Swisher (Because he hadn't yet been added to the sellable jersey list) but was too impatient. Still kicking myself over that one.

And I think im gonna regret picking Marleau over Cheechoo when I bought my 2007 NHL ASG jersey.

Home/Away/Alt Pirates Brian Giles authentic jerseys.

Replica Bucs Warrick Dunn

Replica Bucs Creamcicle 82 Alvin Harper. He not only changed to 80, but was a bust in TB. Yeah, I chose that over an orange rookie that wore 99. Sapp.

A few Penguin Jagr jerseys

Alexei Kovalev Penguin authentic

All these, well, not at the right time.

Stories such as all of yours are the reason that I have not pulled the trigger on a jersey yet. I was toying with a Roethlisberger jersey (he went to my college), but I held off.

Recently, my buddy got me a Cubs away jersey for being in his wedding. I decided to get it made as a Ryne Sandberg jersey, which fortunately he wore the same style of jersey towards the end of his career as they do now. You can't get burned if you make your jersey of someone who's already retired!

I bought an authentic ($200+) Keith Foulke Away Red Sox jersey for 2005 and I think I wore it 3 times total in '05. I think it's in the back of my closet now or somewhere I dunno. Felt like a complete idiot and still do.

$200 on an authentic Red Sox Shea Hillenbrand road jersey. Bought just before he started to prove himself to be less than congenial with most teammates and was traded.

I still wear it on occasion. I think he's still a good ballplayer, and I was fortunate to have seen him start his career in single-A Lowell.

When I was in my teens I didn't want to be burned by a player leaving or doing something dumb so I had my own name and favorite number put on the Blackhawks jersey I bought. I have only worn it a few times because I felt like a goof. Now I have left other jerseys blank because I don't want to make the same mistake.

Vince Carter Raptors jersey, cheap Champion version $60 -- I think you can still find Raptors Carter authentics on sale here for abour $25 Cdn

The biggest risk I took was getting "Hudson 3" on the back of my Jays jersey in 2002 when Orlando Hudson had only played a couple of games in his MLB career... turned out to be a good one, two-time gold glover now.

The second jersey I ever purchased... March, 1996. I was agonizing for a week over the following decision:

Toronto Raptors #20 - Damon Staudemire?

or...

Vancouver Grizzlies #50 - Bryant Reeves?

I went with Staudemire, and... two years later? He was with Portland.

Of course, considering the two hands here, I think I ended up on top.

I've been pretty fortunate. The worst was the white replica Corey Dillon jersey my mom got me for my birthday. I had it for one season and it was the season he decided he was too good for the city of Cincinnati. I love the jersey and still wear it because he was a good player and compared to their current crap those old uniforms were beautiful. Pretty lucky though considering all the other jerseys I've bought. Here's to hoping David Vyborny sticks with the Bluejackets so the authentic jersey I bought myself for christmas isn't a waste.
