West Point visit inspired Ducks new colours

It's true the metallic gold color of the Ducks is somewhat different from the Pens but they look the same unless you're staring at both at the same time.

The Ducks should have at least used a different numeral color on the homes (maybe gold), and come up with something different on the roads that wouldn't copy the same gold-white-black color scheme along the sleeves and bottom of the sweater.

Easiest solution would have been for them to use more orange rather than just a single thin line.

I just find it interesting that in this day of focus groups, surveys, market tests, etc. that can be years in the making before a team chooses a new look, the new owners of the Ducks just told one guy-their general manager- to pick the colours he wanted!

More teams should do that, we might not get stuck with halves of entire leagues going with the same scheme just because it's the new "hot combo."

As Ron MacLean signed off at the end of the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast he mentioned that Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke visited the West Point Academy last year and it had a profound effect on him, furthering his belief in the type of character players he wanted on his team (like American soldiers willing to sacrifice for country, Canadian hockey players willing to sacrifice all for the Stanley Cup).

Hey, nothing like a little perspective, huh? :P

Completely agree. I would much prefer someone choose colors because they're inspired from somewhere or they just like them instead of hiring some consultants and doing some surveys and choosing from that. I was disappointed the Ducks didn't go with Green/Orange and I think the orange and gold clash a bit, but hearing the inspiration for the colors makes me like them a lot more.

One other thing to mention is that the Penguins lightened their Gold for 2006-2007. It went from "Vegas Gold", to a more pale Yellow...

Burke (an American) has repeatedly said he wants as many Canadian players as possible on his team, believing it gives his club an edge come playoff time since Canadian kids grow up dreaming of winning the Stanley Cup first and foremost.

He feels American players might be more influenced by high school or college hockey championships, while European kids consider international competitions like the Olympics and World Championships the most important events growing up.

Besides, the Ducks using "true gold" and black is a lot like the Diamondbacks going with brick, black, and sand. One team may have had the combo first, but it makes more sense for the second team. The Astros would look better in orange and navy or navy and gold, and the Penguins would look better with their old "athletic gold."

I personally feel that if the Ducks were to replace black for hunter green, the set would look absolutely brilliant.

isn't the crest outlined in silver?

Its easier to see in this image:

ANA_kcrjwqrbeutwzzchgyg6.gif

Will the Ducks keep this logo and simply transfer their current uniform to the RBK Edge jerseys or will they make any alterations (someone mentioned putting the D logo on the jersey?)?

I would think and hope they'd keep the status quo- it'd be a first for a team to overhaul their whole identity, win a championship in the first year with the new logo/colours...and then change something again!

At one point, the colors had been proposed as this:

Bronze instead of Gold, and Green...no Silver.

Here are the actual current colors:

Pantone, out of curiousity, do you know how close the actual official colours of the NHL Ducks and Army athletic teams are?

Sure...Army uses flat colors (non-metallic) for their Gold and Gray:

Yah...what the hell do fans know about design anyway! ;)

I think the Ducks' black jerseys are great. The only thing I would change is to use the D as the logo. I really like the number and nameplate font, and the colours work for me.

However, the white jerseys suffer from the same problem as the Penguins' white jerseys - gold and white touching all over the place. They bleed into each other too much. This is especially annoying to me with the Pens' pale gold.

The ducks jerseys are now like everything else NHL these days: boring and generic. There's no flavour or individuality any more. The arenas are all the same, the music is all the same, heck even the traditions are becoming generic. Just about every arena has towel power now.....And the uniforms all look terrible on TV because black and pseudo black contrasts too much against the white playing surface.

Maybe a few people like these uniforms and they sell but they sure aren't helping the league in terms of branding. Say what you want about the old ducks, but they sold a hell of a lot of merchandise and they had a recognizable identity. I dare say people knew who the team was when they weren't contending for the Stanley Cup.

DEATH TO REEBOK

I agree as well. Its neat to know they were inspired by West Point and didn't pay someone big bucks to research the idea.

Myself I've often wondered what the word logo would look like on the shoulders and the giant D would look like on the front. There's just a tad too much white for me on the road jerseys and I'd love to see some shoulder patches. This jersey instantly became one of my favorites after I saw what it looked like. In some ways it reminds me of the old black Canucks skate logo jersey that I loved as a kid.
